A Film Analysis Essay and movie review of Alfonso Cuaron's Masterpiece
Alfonso Cuaron’s latest film Roma on Netflix is a cinematic masterpiece. This video essay explains the themes and techniques that Cuaron used in the Netflix movie and helps to explain the ending
With his unique cinematographic style, artistic purpose, and attention to detail and realism, Cuaron’s voice speaks a truth that reminds us of such auteurs as Kubrick and Fellini. Cuaron showed courage by adopting a 65 mm black and white digital approach, writing the script entirely from memories of his childhood and re-creating the settings or going to actual locations and most profoundly hiring Yalitza Aparicio who has no film experience before this to play the lead part of Cleo .
This is a semi-autobiographical film about an indigenous live-in nanny, Cleo, serving an upper-middle-class home loosely based on Alfonso’s own family. Set in 1970 and 71 in the Mexico City district of Roma, the plot centres around the real life events of the Corpus Christi Massacre. Among the many themes in the film, the strongest resonating ones are of class and racial differences. And yet even though there are many differences between the groups we find that the struggles they face can be very similar through which the gaps can be bridged.
Watching a Cuaron film is like listening to a Bach counterpoint. Cuaron gives us counterpoint in the depth of field. The foreground, middle-ground and background each tell their own story. As pleasing as it is to hear the flow of different harmonies in the high, middle and low registers of a Bach counterpoint, the same can be said for the challenge of understanding the flow in Cuaron’s depth of field. Each time I watch a scene I spot something different because the shots are so complex. And because of the nature of the complexity, the cinematography adds to the efficiency in the story telling. We have no need for long drawn out dialog to set the scene, it is right there on the screen.

This movie was so beautiful. It took me a while to finally sit a watch it. But I regret not doing it sooner. My heart just felt all kinds of emotions. It moved me. Cleo was amazing. Each character brought something amazing to the story. I wanted more at the end. 🥰

The film is quite long. But I do agree that it's beautiful and it's simplicity made it very relatable to any viewer

It was a beautiful movie... filmed beautifully and only a small script its a visual movie that speaks for itself, it doesn't need a lengthy script... if you dont like subtitles its a plus as you get to read and still look at the beauty of the film. A film that shows people treating people well, with love and care no matter their station/role in life... they truly love Cleo and the other household help and vice versa. The young lad was talking to Cleo about past lives on several occasions and always interrupted - he had been a pilot and a sailor and he says when he was old Cleo was with him in that life and I wish they explored that more.....

The difference between the two women, sorry, is only the class. Why you guys are also throwing down our throat the race too? So manipulative and annoying. Regardless, I bow to your gorgeous work. One of the best Roma's reviews around. (((((-:
