Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club 2023 South of England Rally and talk with Fred Fruth

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It is a fabulously sunny Sunday in the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, and we've been invited to a gathering of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars…. Certainly not your standard run of the mill car meet… and organized by the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club www.rrec.org.uk/.
It also is providing a chance for Graham to catch up with an old friend, and for us to take a closer look at the current Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
We spoke to:
Ted Meachem of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club
Michael Sapsford, owner of a marvellous Hooper bodied 1923 Rolls-Royce
Morris Best from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
Fred Fruth, BMW's man-on-the-ground (and Head of PR) when setting up Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood
Many thanks to the Harry Strutters band www.harrystrutters.co.uk/ for entertaining (and assisting) us throughout the day and allowing us to use their music.
Thanks also to Stansted Park www.stanstedpark.co.uk/ for hosting the event.

😂😊 Wow, there are some quite rare models shown here. And in this case I am talking. Modern Rolls_Royce classics, such as a Camargue ,only 541 were ever built. Also Silver Seraph only approx, 1.590 made. All so brilliant and beautiful....😅

Seraph is a BMW no RR should have a nasty engine it MUST have a British engine built in Britain

@@chrisdorrell1 🤔 Maybe so, but the BMW engine aside. It it still the last closest thing that you are ever going to get to a British designed and built Rolls_Royce !.. R.I.P Rolls_Royce 1904 - 2002........

G'day Graham & UKMOTORTALK, What an absolutely magnificent collection of utterly beautiful motor vehicles. I happen to agree with you and Fred, the RR Silver Cloud is the most beautiful of their creations. That is a huge statement given the wonderful design history of RR and the Bentleys, when they were 'commercially' connected. I would regret not saying the following; subjectively and with the knowledge that some people will vehemently disagree with me, but, dear B.M.W., what have you done to the front of the latest Rolls Royce models? To my eye and especially when surrounded by truly classic Rolls Royce designs of old; the square, 'boxy cut' front profile of the newest Rolls Royce model has lost a huge 'artistic' and design component of their lineage, to a point where I simply would not want to own one. The rest of the new car models are, of course, superb in every way, but one, and I like the concept of an 'off road' model for those that want them. Perhaps this is because I was born in the late 50s and, for me, Rolls Royce and Bentley motor vehicles retained a much longer design heritage. The vehicles from the 50s into of the 70s and even the 90s were beautiful. Although, I can say I truly admire some other brands of vehicles, there is not one other where I would choose the adjective 'beautiful'. Indeed, for more than several years, car design concepts have lost their ‘company specific’ individuality. Far too many modern car brands basically resemble each other. Unless one is stuck in traffic, close enough to read ‘tiny’ company badges, one has little chance of telling the brands apart. On the other hand, I believe Volkswagen have retained more of the historic 'essence' of the Bentley in the front profiles of their latest vehicles. Like many, I regret that the US began a movement to remove the companies 'radiator cap' statuettes, for pedestrian safety issues, that was, for me the beginning of fundamental design changes. Although, purely on a safety level I'm NOT disagreeing, yet perhaps the problem could have been resolved in another way. One has to question if there was any market research of, say, previous and existing Rolls Royce owners about the drastic design departures evident in the front profiles of the latest models. The famous vertical radiator bars are but a mere 'suggestion' of their previous appearance. In any case, I'm going to take your advice, Graham, and hunt around for a true bargain for a used 80s or 90s Bentley (or RR) vehicle. Thank you so much for a look at so many beautiful motor vehicles. Such cars are pretty thin on the ground down here in Tasmania. Cheers and all the best, Bill H.

Hello Bill and many thanks for your comments. We were delighted at your evident pleasure in our Rolls Royce Enthusiasts' Club film. A great day with many friendly and generous people, and amazing cars. Having been involved, as I mentioned, from early in the BMW Rolls Royce project, I have found BMW to be a responsible owner and to have treated the marque with respect. That said, I do agree that the latest design changes perhaps more closely follow BMW design trends than "traditional" Rolls Royce. However, these changes certainly don't seem to have affected overall sales, RR recently posting its best ever numbers. Perhaps the continuing increase in Middle East sales is also having an effect on the design? It is said that that market wants large(r) cars eg the "off road" Cullinan model we also featured. If you do follow up your quest for an 80s or early 90s car do keep us posted. Vehicles of that era are exceptional value for money in the UK, with a plentiful supply, but is the situation similar in your market or are things more difficult? Do keep us posted and thanks again for your comments. Graham @UKMotorTalk

Hi Bill, Further to our last, we've now also had a more holistic and technical response from Fred Fruth regarding the look of newer Rolls Royce models...: "Thank you for forwarding these comments! Like many other RR aficionados, I do agree with what Bill said about the RR radiator shape. Why has it changed though? Simply because it had to be in accordance with the “Directive 2003/102/EC for the protection of pedestrians of November 17, 2003,” correlating with the current “ Euro NCAP safety regulations” *). At the same time this meant that the previous regulation “With effect from September 1, 2015, Regulation 70/156/EEC Article 7 Paragraph 1 will become invalid”. Before that, our designers managed a truly classic radiator shape for the 2003 Phantom VII and its two derivatives Coupe and Drophead Coupe, before they had to change it for meeting the new regulation. Alas, there was no alternative! In fact these early “BMW” solutions were even more in line with the traditional classic RR radiator than Crewe´s last version for the “Silver Seraph”, with its rounded edges. Our competitive colleagues from VW avoided this problem for their new “mid size” and all successive Bentley models by interpreting only the mesh grille of the original Bentley radiator as a modern variation of the classic radiator shape, thus doing completely without its surrounding shell. They, too, had to find a solution in accordance with the new safety rules. *) By the way: despite its name “Euro NCAP” this new regulation has been founded by the British TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) for the British DTI (Department of Transport and Industry) in 1996 and, consequently been taken over by the other EU members" I hope that you find this of interest. Making a car look nice appears to be getting more and more difficult! Graham @UKMotorTalk

I have a sweet place for the 50s Rolls. The newer ones just don't cut it. Not even the 2023 ones that only the ultra rich can afford... LOL

Fantastic! Only the new RR Cullinan have not the majesty of the traditionals Rolls-Royce, a limousine saloon Rolls Royce is high 165 cm, and this fact make unnecessary a Rolls-Royce SUV.
