Rollerblading Back In The X-Games?!

The Xgames might want to bring inline skating back. But do we want them back in the sport?

I think it shows a maturity that skating can hold multiple ideas about itself at the same time. Like, you can have the hammers, the tech skating, the ultra mainstream (fise/xgames etc), the core underground, high end video productions and VX style gritty street sections, big wheel, small wheels, middle sized wheels and everything in between. Skating is richer and more interesting when it expands sideways in all directions. I love that skating is all these things at the same time and because of it it looks infinitely better and more appealing.

the big difference from back in those days is that we have social media. getting new members is not just by x-games anymore and they understand how much their power has diminished. keep creating content like this to diminish them even more, so the power to negotiate is even bigger.

Solid points made, Corey. I’m a 34-year old blader who watched rollerblading fall out of the public eye...but seeing the way this industry was able to revitalize itself over the years, I agree-rollerblading may end up being something a program like the X-Games could need in the future. We’ll see! Thanks for putting out thoughtful content 👍

Honestly never gave many fux about the X-Games thing. There was a brief "Aw, that's a shame." Quickly followed by "Oh well. Next..." Blading never died outside of USA. We never had the level of exposure/money inflow that happened in the States so we didn't miss it when it stopped. We just kept skating.

@@coreyenglish8706 Don't get me wrong, we saw the drop in terms of the hanger-on kids who were only in it for the fad, but we always had a solid skate scene that just rolled on. Our pros never made money in the first place, it was never on tv unless it was a US show shown at stupid o'clock in the morning anyway. The downturn had little effect to the real committed bladers who were in it for the love of skating. Same faces still showed up at sessions, same homegrown comps still took place. I suppose we always functioned within the grassroots level and X-Games interest made no difference except to the tiny few who might have made the cut to compete. Outside of that everyone just kept it rolling. If anything, it made the events outside the US the focus of blading culture.

Well I just turned 41. Just getting back into it is fun. Trying to remember stuff I loved to do is a mission in its self. What I did notice last year was that there were no beef (no problem) with me sk8ing around skateboarders. In my time back in 1997-1999 in Long Beach CA there were fights and rumbles. Clicks of skateboarders and Aggressive bladers were everywhere. Now its like that time and hate is no more. I am blading in the same park with skateboarders my age who do remember those times and we sk8 and talk about it and are in agreement that it is way better now. Kids now cheer for anyone trying and just have fun. Im glad that grudge is over. Hope its stays this awesome for ever.

"Older" skateboarders and bmxers are still kinda "meh" about bladers, but when I'm at the park hitting some rails and throwing some mistys, the younger folks on scooters and boards are all really impressed and come over asking me stuff like "how long have you been blading for; hwo much do these cost; etc". So it really is getting better. ...and as most people in skateparks have (almost) never ever seen someone shred on blades, I kinda feel like a rare animal, lol :D

Interesting to watch; I was an in-line street skater in NYC back in the mid 90’s, when we used the Rollerblade wrenches as grind plates, hacksawed the brakes off our Rollerblades, front sides and soul grinds were still new tricks, and skaters from all over the world sessioned together in Union Square Park (and I personally got into street skating through speedskating, so I was always the fastest guy getting away when security guards chased us out of spots!) As inline skaters back then, we were the first sport to infringe directly on skateboard territory (BMX’ers were few in number, and not seen as threats). Inline skating, however, blew up big and fast, and competed with skateboarders for space at street spots and skate parks. Some elements of the culture mixed, but skateboarders saw inline skating as “too easy” as sport. Right from the start, that’s where the dischord began, and never ended. Personally, I loved seeing this video; it brought back some great memories, and I hope you bring the sport back. Good luck!

If rollerblading wants to thrive, rather than barely survive, then it needs representation in mainstream media. That’s how we can ensure new blood, new money and a good future. Wether we like it or not, mainstream media is where the big money is and being back in the x games could put us in a good position to ensure a brighter future for rollerblading, more money for its pros and putting people in a better position to make successful careers from running rollerblading related companies.

My last comp was ASA World Championships in LA 2004, I miss the ASA. It was always so rad to turn on espn2 after school and see Feignberg, Arlo, Edwards, Mora, just killing it... then along came Jason Stinsman, and the Yasutoko Bros..... good ol' days for sure. But now we have the old guard standing watch over ours groms and we can protect them..... lets get back into the world scene. As a sport we fell, so we get the hell back up and drop a hammer on 'em all!

Love the story, very nostalgic and brings back some great memories. I went to Naples, FL (97) / Las Vegas (98)/ Ft. Meyers, FL (99) Edit: I'm 40 as well

I grew up watching and wishing I could get in into aggressive inljne but never was able to. Now I'm a 30yo single father and just ordered my first pair. Between mountain biking and skating I'm finally doing some things I've always dreamed of as well as making memories with my daughter.

The X Games are what got me into inline in the 90s but I’m 44 now and like you say, we need a younger generation to get involved to keep the sport alive and becoming part of the games again would only be a good thing IMO. Great vid as always 👍🏽

I find it strange how the American scene cared so much about what other people think of blading. In Europe, Australia and Asia 0 f##ks were given at all.

I feel like if it was back in the x games there would be more attention on the sport which would be good. I live in Houston Texas, the 4th largest city in the USA(around 2.3 million people), and there isn't a single skate shop I've found in the whole city. If rollerblading was reinstated into the games a few shops might pop up Edit: I found 1 shop

Back in the days I was really sad that aggressive inline skating removed from x-games, right now I don’t care about x-games, I rather prefer to see an event only on inline skating. Some other thing I would like to mention is you can see a person destroying his skateboard out of rage and be proud of it, on the other hand inline skaters, aggressive or not always value their skates, I haven’t seen any single youtube video on someone actually destroying his skates, maybe it did better we separated long ago and should not be get together again

BRING BACK BLADING 2022!!!!! It's a great time to bring it back. If it comes back and does well I don't think we'd get teased. I didn't get hassled when I put my skates on because I knew all the boarders at the parks we went to and I rode a board once and awhile too.

I agree. If blading is going to grow it needs mainstream exposure. People do so much crazy/tech shit on blades but almost nobody actually sees it. X games would be good but it can be anything. It should be in movies, video games, animation , music videos , advertisements etc. One of the issues for blading is that the public doesn't realize what people can actually do on blades.
