Roller Coasters That Terrify Me!

Even as a coaster enthusiast, there are certain roller coasters that can still scare the $h!t out of me! I find myself anxiously waiting in line before strapping into some of these terror machines on today's list. Hopefully this video serves as an inspiration for those who currently struggle with fear of roller coasters.

I remember just sitting there on the station, just strapped in tight, my grandmother wishing me luck, (she couldn't fit on the ride), and we were there on the launch. I never been on something over 100mph. And then after we rolled back, and I tried counting until launch but it came a second sooner. The thing felt like I was being ripped out forwards but I was on the back so it was weird but then that hill came and I didn't gray out at all and then the extreme air time came and boom. I was incredibly excited, I just rode the first ever Strata coaster.

For me, the longer (and steeper) the lift hill is, the more anxiety it provokes. I once got stuck on a Eurofighter lift hill for only 30 minutes, but I had a panic attack lol. And yeah, just looking at the magnitude of stratacoasters makes me shudder. First drops always take my breath away too. My body has no problem dealing with inversions and g force and such, but I can't even look out the window of a 5 story building without holding onto something haha. Coasters are exposure therapy for heights with me 🤣

I think for Tatsu, since it sits on a hill, it really terrifies people who are afraid of heights, because Tatsu is so far off the ground. I mean 170 ft up that lift is amazingly high for a flying coaster :)

Height rarely phases me except on things like skycoasters. Hydraulic launches however still genuinely scare the hell out of me, but I love 'em to death. I absolutely love Xcelerator and Dragster, but no matter how many times I ride them, I'm still caught off guard by the launch. Definitely one of my favorite coaster models.

5:56 perfect way to describe the feeling of being on a roller coaster. The first time I went on Dragster, it was only a 20 minute wait, and I hated every second of it. Once we got to the station, I sat in my seat, pulled down the lap bar, and basically pouted like the angsty 12 year old I was. As the train rolled onto the launch track, I thought to myself, “why did I agree to this? I have so much left in life that I want to experience.” But it didn’t matter because the train started booking it down the launch. I didn’t have any time to feel scared. Once we reached the peak, I stared at the view of the park (which is honestly my favorite part of the ride) and then we started plummeting towards the ground. I got off the ride shaky and excited. I got back in line 3 more times after that.

This hobby has the steepest learning curve of anything. You can spend years practicing a martial art every day and not consider yourself an expert. Coasters? It takes one ride. My first "big" coaster with inversions (and only my second ever, 8 years after my first which was a simple Pinfari Zyklon) was Kraken at SeaWorld Orlando. I wasn't on the front or back row and I was scared to death, gripping the restraint's handles and holding my head back and not daring to move an inch. The Gs were painful. Afterwards I felt dizzy. I rode it again and already I was putting my arms up...

Standing in line for Maxx Force for the first time. I was super excited until I got to where I could see the trains just disappearing into the tunnel. Not even a couple seconds after the second train that I could see launched, they asked if there were any double riders. My dad and I were pretty far back, but we ended up being the first pair. They had us go over to the other line, and strap in. Now I'm super nervous. We pull up to the launch, and I nearly crap myself. It seemed like forever. Then I heard the clunks before launch. Again, felt like forever. Finally, we launch. The moment the acceleration kicked in it was amazing. The roll was insane. Once the train stopped I was just laughing because it was so fun!

They’re just way too terrifying for me to handle. It’s not a very pleasant experience when all you want to do is cry up there. There are some rollercoasters that I’ll never go on though, such as Superman Escape from Krypton, Top Thrill Dragster, Kingda Ka, and those Giga Coasters.

I just hit 48 inches and I was with my best friend going up the lift hill backwards and on your back was terrifying then slowly tilting up to the horizon. The first pre drop holds u almost upside down with nothing to look at (this is the scariest part of the ride in my opinion) then getting flipped over to face the ground 200 feet in the hair. I never think I’ve had a bigger smile on that ride. I went from pure fear to pure adrenaline and excitement. Best ride on X2 I’ve ever had

its not really a coaster but a ride that terrifies me are the slingshot and the drop towers.... i did a drop tower once, in france (nigloland) it was a 100m tall drop and god, i really diddnt likes the sensation. Else, i got last year my first ride on ttd and millenium force, and this was the first time i went up more than 45m (france parks dont have really huge coasters), and god, i did MF in the first row for my first experience and i wasnt that much scared about the drop but when the train got alll the way to the top, i realized that it was really high up there, and then, boom the drop, and holy cow it was intense and i will never forget it, as muchas the wind in my face and my shirt going back... after that i went to ttd and i got to the line, there were a 1h30 wait time, and we got to the line. It was my last day at the park so i really wanted to do it, and at the middle of the line, after 40min of wait, the train got a problem and a lot of peoples went back and started quitting the queue. I almost quited but after 35-45mins, the ride restarted and almost got a rollback. After 2 and a half of wait time, The time had come to me to enter the 2nd train, 3rd row, and boom, the train starts, goes slowly into the launch, and stop, the engine sounds start and my heart start pounding at the speed of light, and then, The light starts appearing and weaunch. I cant breath bu the sensation is amazing, then before i had the time to say something, were at the top of the tower, and i get a small airtime, then i see th amazing view, and the drop coming, and right after that, we hi the breaks and slowly lose speed, and i'm shocked by what just happened. U N F O R G E T T A B L E. it was maybe one of the best sensation i ever experienced, and i would gladly do it again. sorry for the wall of text, and for the english errors but i'm frencch :D

The only times I have felt scared on a coaster was going up the lift for Loch ness monster because it was my first looping coaster, waiting for the launch on dragster, and recently riding magnum in the 2nds to row because the insane ejector made it feel like I could fall out, and I wasn't sure if I set my lapbar too high, making it one of the most fun ride I have ever had on any coaster.

Sfmm is my home park and I have to say... No one is ever ready for the pretzel loop on tatsu. I've ridden dozens of times and every time I tell myself I'm ready for it but I never am, and neither is anyone else i bring on it. God i love TATSUUUUUUU. Oh yeah and the backwards ride up X2's lift is definitely anxiety inducing.

honesty the coaster that scares me the most would have to be top thrill dragster and kingda ka. i don’t really have a fear of heights or anything but just the thought of it freaks me out so so so much. i don’t have a fear of launching so fast, i find that part super super fun. i think it might just be the fact that the only thing protecting you is a lap bar.

I was so scared of Top Thrill Dragster when I went in 2014. It never opened for me, and I was relieved, and I was disappointed in myself for feeling relieved. In 2018, it was my top priority, and I went for front row on my first ride. It was terrifying, but it was so exhilarating. TTD & Kingda Ka still make me nervous every time I ride. X2 also had me nervous, even for my rerides a couple months ago. i305 didn't really scare me, because I don't grey out much, and it didn't make me grey out. I actually rode it 24 times my last day there, 14 in the last 80 minutes, and could've kept going. Monster at Adventureland had me nervous, because it goes immediately into the beyond vertical drop without any hold.

Hypersonic XLC was probably the scariest rollercoaster of all time. The launch was insane but more importantly, the hill was very close with a shallow pull up. It looked like you were being launched into a wall of steel. On the midway you could watch the faces of people waiting to launch. Most had a look of pure terror.

I had a very similar experience with Dragster. It was the last coaster I rode because it was closed for the first couple days of my trip. On my third and final day it opened and I got on. I was terrified, but as soon as I started launching, I instantly relaxed and had a blast. After that experience I no longer have fear when I’m about ride a coaster.

The scariest ride is the first. My first coaster was the hulk at universal orlando. I did single rider line and I ended up in the front row, not seeing or hearing any of the previous launches. It starts out at a slow and steady incline, as expected. I didn’t realize the thing would shoot me out like a cannonball. Then the fog tunnel made me blind for a minute. That, in the front row, plus all the fear of one’s first real coaster makes the hulk the scariest ride I’ve been on.

those left to right and right to left transitions on I305 are fearful and exhilarating to me every time i ride....the grey outs on the first turn if you get it and coming to just to experience a massive section of airtime only magnifies the feeling and fear or intimidation of this ride....I only wish i could have rode it before it was nerfed.... "gentleman start your engines" pretty much makes me wet myself.....a good operator makes it even more insane.

Yep, I’m totally with you regarding flying coasters. At my home park (Alton Towers), the flying coaster Galactica scares me so much more than the “thrill rides” (Smiler and Nemesis) as I feel like I’m going to be dropped to the ground. Hence it’s kinda my favourite ride there 🙂. And vertical lift hills are weirdly terrifying too. Great video.

I think heights can get my fear sense going. I don't usually get afraid on coasters but I'll admit that the lift hill of a giga coaster gets me anxious as I'm slowly ascending. That being said, I'm never afraid of the drop. And stratacoasters never scare me because you don't have time to get nervous while ascending. It's tall flat rides that get me. I always get nervous on the lift of drop towers. I find Windseekers quite scary. But no rides make my palms sweat like Star Flyers. The chains look really sketchy, like they're made of cheap necklaces. I've never been to the Statosphere but I imagine that would freak me out.

I just got off of Montu so my adrenaline was pumping and I felt invincible I got locked into my restraint and I instantly said “ what did I just do?” Even though I was scared I wasn’t super anxious, well until I got higher and higher and higher and started feeling that feeling in my stomach and to make matters worse I felt the seats start turning me towards my stomach and it just held me there just taunting me. Honestly, Superman Ultimate Flight at SFGAm is the only roller coaster which has managed to terrify me on multiple rides. Having that flying coaster lift hill where you're just looking at the flat ground the whole time, as you slowly increase in height, with nothing but a harness holding you in, is just an absolutely terrifying experience unmatched by about anything else you can experience on a coaster (note: I haven't ridden a strata yet). Powerful launches like Maxx Force? Scary the first time, but not so much after that. I305 with it's massive, steep, and quick lift hill going into a blackout-enducing drop? Same thing. And I even really heavily black out on that thing (badly enough to miss half the ride). Honestly, I don't even think a second ride on Joker would top it (although I DID get beat up on that thing, so idk if I will ride it again). That flying coaster lifthill is just absolutely terrifying, and I would think that if I ever rode Tatsu I'd definitely rank it as the most terrifying coaster I've ridden. Strangely enough I had no problem on Manta.

Nothing has made me have such coaster PTSD as Superman: Ultimate Flight ay SFDK (the original skyrocket II). For context, I have only rode it once, but when I did it was in the very back (long lines lead to bad first time placement). The roughly 100ft drop into a 60 mph launch on an incredibly short launch track was one of the most intense experiences I have even been through. That, and after going through the incredibly fun and hangtime filled heartline roll, there is maybe 10 ft of track between you and the drop, and in the back, even with trims you get whipped over the 150ft 90 degree twisting drop. As much as I love coasters like X2 and Tatsu (not nearly as bad as everyone says unless you're in the back), this will always freak me out.

Tatsu is really the only coaster that gets me. I'm not a fan of heights so looking straight down is a bit unnerving but I have been on this coaster close to 100 times, so I'm kind of used to it, and I love listening to people's reactions on the first hill. When I first got back into coasters a few years ago, the first time I rode X2 and the first time I rode Top Thrill Dragster I was like what am I doing right before the TTD launch and X2 drop. Drop towers over 200 feet where it is a slow climb up and drop are really the only thing that gets to me.

There are only 2 coasters that intimidate me that I have ridden. X2 and Xcelerator. Actually I have not ridden X2 yet but I’m so intimidated to ride it. I was waiting in line for it with a friend at the time the park was closing. I also didn’t bring a dollar with me so I might have been kicked out. Sadly my friends dad was in the pick up area so we had to get out of line. But when I was waiting in line, seeing the train go up the lift, it looked so scary. I knew what to expect but something just scared me. Now Xcelerator, the ride itself doesn’t scare me. What scares me about the ride, is the launch. Xcelerator has the most forceful launch on the west. Launch coasters in general intimidate me. But oh my god the launch on Xcelerator is incredible. I love it. Maybe I’m not scared, I’m just excited or nervous.

All I could think was God I hope these restraints don't unlock.I mean we were halfway up the lift hill and it still was high. This is not a coaster, but a ride contraption that has always made me nervous the few times I’ve ridden one is the portable sling shot ride called the Ejection Seat by Gravity Works. It used to show up at state fairs and it operates on honest to goodness bungee cords. It’s basically bungee jumping in reverse, and man! That thing is intense! The spring shot version found at many amusement parks is slower and more controlled. But the Ejection Seat is totally untamed. I haven’t seen one in years, so I think they might be banned now.
