Everybody and their mother wants a Rolex. It's old news at this point. However, it seems like the giant in the watch industry is finally ready to take on it's biggest enemy. Itself. Well, it's not really it's biggest enemy...I guess it's ours...but only because we can't get them. Anyway Rolex is planning to increase production! What does that mean for the watch making giant? What does that mean for the grey market? Has the bubble popped?

    I respect your comparison between jumping through hoops and giving the true fans their childlike moment of excitement. Happened to me and it was genuinely appreciated. I'm in the DC area and work a basic, one-of-a-million type of job. There's no way I could be a high roller compared to the top 8 wealthiest counties in the country. I don't mind waiting. I wanted a Polar Explorer II in 2-3 years to celebrate when I would be coming off of cancer monitoring. Got on the list at Liljenquist & Beckstead with no purchase history. I would come in an talk watches with the sales associate every few months when I happened to be in the area. Got the call unexpectedly after only 6 months. Was a few days before my 40th birthday. Hadn't even thought about it at the time, but I remembered putting my birth date on their list request for the Rolex. I'm confident that they appreciated my genuine enthusiasm and offered me an opportunity commemorate my 40th, quite a bit sooner than my original plans. It was a big moment and completely unexpected! Challenge now is I still need something to celebrate coming off cancer monitoring in 18-24 months. Going to have to figure that one out!

    I’m so far past giving a shit about Rolex now that I have no desire. I had the same vision as so many people when I was younger. “I want a gold Rolex” I now have a Grand Seiko, JLC, and Oris. Next is going to either be Breitling Datora or Cartier Santos. I’d legit rather get a Seiko panda than a Daytona now

    I bought several steel Rolex between 2006 and 2013. No waiting lists, always readily available, with good discounts if you payed in cash or by bank trasference. I would see a Daytona at the AD window and that same night see it on the wrist of a german tourist staying at the same hotel where I was spending my vacation. And they were as desired as today. The wait is not what harms the brand, it is the uncertainty of when are you going to get it or if you ever will. Like buying a car. You have to wait but you know for long. If the Audi dealer says he does not know when will the car be available, you buy another brand that gives you that information.

    I think Rolex are going to 1/ focus more on precious metals and 2/ try to make the Cellini more relevant as a compete with Patek in the dress watch space (with the Calatrava), but also in complexity and finish. My wild card guess is tomorrow Rolex release a series of elegant Cellini dress watches….maybe including a perpetual calendar movement. Going beyond what Rolex have done to date (with annual calendar on the skydweller) and also recognising the sports watch market will shift a little more to dress watches over the next few years. Piaget. A fan. Own one. Hope they launch a heritage range going back to their roots Great video as always.

    It's basic human nature that sometimes we "think" we want what we can't have. And once Rolex started selling for more than retail on the gray market years ago, it created the hysteria that we know today about Rolex. But, we all have to ask ourselves, would you still really want that same Rolex watch if it was readily available at retail anytime you wanted to buy it? Can you see yourself wearing and enjoying it? Or does it stay in the safe - waiting for the next increase in prices? I love Rolex (the physical watches) for their timeless beauty and quality. But at the same time, I think the hysteria surrounding the brand has done damage to the "image" of Rolex (on many different levels). It's great to see things trending down with gray market prices, but there are so many other great watch brands to actually enjoy wearing and that don't carry all the baggage.

    Rolex models are becoming more available even at present . The small family run ADS may still be very difficult but that’s because in relative terms they don’t get a lot of stock . The big boutiques things are certainly changing , I was in the boutique last week the girl I’ve dealt with for many years said people are turning pieces down when called . No surprise, when the grey market was out of control everyone wanted Rolex as it was essentially free money . Not a whole lot trading massively over list now and future is uncertain so people are often disinterested. As availability increases further there will be a further drop in interest . The hysteria of the last five years is definitely dying.

    Rolex has a list of serial numbers so knows where the grey market watches have come from yet they haven't stopped the grey market. They have actively helped it by 1) stopping regular people from buying the watch they want and forcing people to the grey market 2) make people buy models they don't want to get on a wait list for the watch they do so more watches will also end up on the grey market . As Rolex doesn't benefit from the grey market premiums, they should produce less watch models people don't want and more of the ones that are popular. Stopping grey markets this way Using this strategy to stop the grey market they could increase the retail price slightly, keeping the hype .

    If Rolex over produces their watches, I truly believe it's game over. People like what they can't get. Luxury is about exclusivity, not excess. Being greedy can quickly destroy a brand. I believe Rolex knows this. Smart brands such as Hermes and Chanel know this. Look at the birkin. Would the birkin be the birkin if you could walk in the boutique and buy them?? NO!!!!! They know how to play the supply and demand game.

  • @syncswim

    @syncswim

    I don't understand why people still believe the claim from their marketing team that "we cannot keep up with unprecedented demand." Go to a dedicated Rolex boutique to see where they're really headed: Barely any watches on display and no sports models at all (because the entire world knows them by heart already, why bother showing them?) Very few watches inside the boutique itself, just rows of austere tables where you sit with a sales rep and THEY quiz YOU about who you are, what you do for a living, and, basically, why the hell you think you deserve a Rolex. This is the model all top-tier luxury is pursuing, because it works.

  • @simonthewatchguy6073

    @simonthewatchguy6073

    Жыл бұрын

    @@syncswim This comment is the best one I've seen on the topic. This is precisely the problem. The sales rep basically performs an assessment on you: 1) How much is this person going to spend in our store? including on non-Rolex items 2) Does this person look like they should be wearing a Rolex?. I've been on a waiting list for 12+ months and I'm assuming that means my AD don't think I'm the type of customer who "deserves" a Rolex. Of course, that forces me into the grey market, which is somewhere I don't want to really be. The worst thing about all of this, is that we're told Rolex don't like watch flippers apparently - yet sell to AD's who are clearly selling to known flippers. For me as a new customer, I don't have a Rolex to flip! But you wont sell to me, and will sell to someone else multiple times because they're a "known customer" but they're flipping the watch... That's before we mention AD's who remove stickers, sell to themselves so the watch can now be sold as "pre-owned" on grey for 2-4x MSSRP. It's a total joke. I love Rolex watches but getting hold of one is a very off-putting process and turning people to rivals such as Omega etc

    At 38:18 Christian asks how many people will want Rolex if they are more readily available? A better question maybe how many people have been turned way from their local AD to the point where they don't want to return for more abuse/insult to our intelligence? If I want a specific Rolex, and the AD would take my deposit and I could expect to take delivery within 6 to 12 months, then I would have no problem buying again from an AD. Note that I do not expect to buy a Daytona per se, but at least let me know with some certainty when I can get the Rolex I want to wear. If the AD can't do this then I will buy any brand but Rolex online. One more thing, Rolex could eliminate the AD's altogether and let me buy direct from Rolex online, like Tesla does today, and take delivery at a Rolex boutique or my local AD to get the watch sized. Let's be real, when is the last time a Rolex AD had to any "selling" to get you to buy a Rolex?

    Apparently, they've already upped production by quite a bit and are in the process of getting even more production facilities up and running by, err, 2025? IIRC. Gotta say that I used to (partially) blame Rolex themselves for this whole affair - and I still think they (or at least the ADs) are partially to blame, but: When I look at the current offerings on Chrono24, sorted by production years, it seems pretty clear that there are a ton of current watches out there and that, if anything, supply seems to have gone up over the last five years or so. For example... number of Rolex Subs currently on offer: 2018: 178 2019: 225 2020: 405 2021: 484 2022: 887 2023: 416 (as of late March 2023, that is) This might not be super scientific, but I think that it's at least an indication as to numbers produced and put into the market. Weirdly enough, it's not that these things were actually super rare - so we're still having to pay ridiculous premiums for a mass-produced and (in theory) widely available product.

    Not much will really change, increased supply won’t hit ADs for another couple years, then when the permanent factory comes online in 2029/2030 then these temporary locations will close. But here’s the thing, the market will be larger as more people decide to drop their names in the hat. So indeed double is not realistic with 1 new factory and I do believe they will finally be completely in house making sapphire crystals and all hands, creating this capability rather than devoting all bandwidth to higher production.

If they sold much more watches to genuine Rolex enthusiasts instead of flippers, there would not be 50 people per watch on the lists but maybe 10. The majority of waiting list entries are flippers. That’s the game here. And the ADs are perfectly aware of it.

    The game at the AD is rigged and not in the customer's favor today. Michael & Christian pointed out the obvious about overspending for watches you don't want just to get "the call" for the one you really want. They are also not exaggerating when they say you need to spend $500,000 to be offered a Daytona. Furthermore, recent grey market dealers confessed on KZread that the same AD's who tell you its "supply & demand so we cannot offer you a Rolex", call a grey market dealer to sell Rolex OVER RETAIL directly to the grey market dealer. The AD does this to cash in on Rolex selling over retail to make a healthy profit. Assuming you still want an Omega, Breitling, or any other brand, take my advice from personal expereince and DON"T PAY full retail to "build a relationship". Instead, negotiate/buy the watch you want from an online dealer at a discount. One day the pendulum will swing back to the watch collectors' favor, and the AD will treat us like a customer should be treated!

    High end watch companies are the ONLY high end group that make their clients jump thru ‘hoops’. If I want to buy a McLaren I go to the dealer ship and buy one….I don’t have to spend a certain amount of $$$$$$$$ with them I just buy the car….like I did two weeks ago. Deal done (not a flex) just a simple fact of life. So if the grey market will sell me the watch I want I will buy it from them…..simple!!!

    Any idea if there are more people who would want a Daytona if they could get one at say 10000 than there are those would sell the one they paid 25k for because it is no longer worth 25k? Let's say Rolex makes a million watches this year. If they make 1,250,000 or 1,333,000 next year will they be able to sell of those at about the same profit per watch that they got from this year's million? How about say five years down the road? How much of the desire is because not everyone can have one because of shortages, and how much of the exclusivity is because even say 5% off MSRP a lot of people still can not have one?

I'm not saying Rolex is going to follow the same path But because I remember what happened to megabass, I lick my finger like a baby, bite my left year like a Idiot to save my self from spending more than MSRP to get a Rolex.😂

    Does Rolex really want the Daytona to be the AD's reward watch? I don't think they do. Rolex doesn't make more money because the AD locks Daytona in the back cabinet, telling people who would buy one no. It's turned into a game that makes people mad. I hope Rolex floods that market.

    Rolex is going to raise prices. They aren’t going to smash the gray market; they will validate it. Rolex is pushing Tudor to become what Rolex was, and drive “average” consumers towards that brand. Rolex wants to become more expensive, more exclusive, and thereby be perceived as true luxury. Rolex has been enviously eyeing other brands that command a higher price and prestige. These guys are fools for not seeing that.

    Disagree with this - Rolex wants the grey market to succeed, this is how they built their allure and brand… they are growing sales each year and this is based on the “decide now or forever lost” allure of “the list.” If people were able to walk into a Rolex AD and buy any watch they pleased, the brand would be impacted negatively and sales would likely fade over next 2-3 years…
