    I know that this video is “old” by now, and that your channel has come a very long way since. However, I wanted to mention some things about the bracelet for reference, and for those still considering a purchase. While I disagree with many of your negatives as a bit too nit-picky for my tastes, I can understand it, and to each their own. But on the subject of the oyster bracelet: there are three micro adjustments on the underside of the clasp, allowing you to further tailor the fit of your bracelet. In this case, you probably should have added an extra link, and brought the micro adjustment all of the way in. This allows for adjustment between full links. That way, when your wrist does swell up, you can use the easy link, and it won’t flop around as much as you noted in the video.

    Thank you so much for your honesty. There's a lot that goes into finding one's right fit with anything. At the end of the day we have to be true to ourselves. I'm going through a similar watch dilemma albeit at a much lower price point. Your story is valuable to all in the watch community.

    Some watches are just not made for some people. They can never seem to get use to them. I have the very same watch. The size and fit is fine for me. Mine fit without any need for adjustments. You do realize there is micro-adjustments in the clasp, only 3 but they are there. Yes it is a scratch magnet. But that is the nature of steel. I have other watches in 316 and they are the same. A high polish mirror finish is almost impossible to keep, unless you do not wear the watch. After 40 years in the tool and die industry, the scratches you see under close inspection or with the frequency of white led light are exactly what I would expect in a very short time frame. The movement problems are a different matter. I have had none of these issues. Mine may gain 2 seconds in a week. I reset it about once a month just to interact with it. It is the most accurate mechanical watch I have ever owned. Your AD did you no justice. The rotor should make almost no sound, and no +4 or -4 seconds per/day is not within Rolex specs. You must be brutal with these AD's at times. The watch is under warranty and they must make it right.

    I bought this watch about a month ago. Overall I love it. Your right that it does scratch easy. I really like the lume when it's fully charged, looks so cool in low lighting. The problem is that it doesn't last long. Mine is 2 seconds a day fast and totally silent when you shake it. I find the bracelet as comfortable as my oyster prepetual. It's more of a dress watch than sports watch. I think of it as a dress watch that is understated and you can wear casually as well. Also, I don't need to put on my reading glasses to tell the time. The face of the watch is a classic in my opinion, nothing wasted. I plan on it being my everyday watch for now.

    I bot one and never regretted it. So much history. Arguably the very first sports watch, Everest expedition. Brushed center links, end links flow to strap. Low profile and is perfect if you are a 1 watch guy. Also only “watch guys” notice this watch. The people who know no horological history buy a date sub or datejust. Or a Daytona. On downside, the crystal is kinda shiny

    Yeah I'm aware of the micro-adjust but it didn't seem to matter. It wasn't a problem with finding the correct size so much as how aggressive the edges of the watch case and bracelet were, or perhaps a combo of both. Regardless it never felt comfortable and has since been sold. I replaced it with a Submariner that I am very happy with.

    This past weekend I was at Torneau and they had an immaculate 36mm Explorer Ref 114270. I tried it on wrist and it fit incredible well. Even my gf who knows nothing about watches commented on how beautiful the watch was. I then went to Rolex to try on this exact watch (the current 39mm version). I couldn’t believe how clunky and oversized it felt. I prefer watches in the 38-39mm range but this wears extremely big. The beefy lugs betray the beauty of the dial. If you haven’t tried on the 114270 I’d highly suggest trying one on wrist. I think you’ll probably be happier with that model in your collection based off your gripes with this 39mm version. And you might even pocket yourself $1-2k in the process of the exchange.

    Another great video thanks for taking the time to give us your well considered thoughts. I've always hankered after the Explorer 1 but it's always been a vintage model. I've tried the modern ones on several occasions hoping I'd have the same feelings but I don't. I'm the same, for me it just is not comfortable. I think some people, most probably, can just put a watch on and forget about it. But I'm the sort of person who gets irritated at the slightest thing that causes discomfort. It's just who we are. I don't think it should put others off it's a fantastic watch.

    Great review. I’ve just updated from 2018 white face OP39 to a 214270 explorer. I agree with many of your comments. My OP also gained three seconds / day and likely had the same calibre as your 39 mm explorer. This was an absolutely constant three second gain, and I suspect was a regulation issue rather than an issue with the movement’s accuracy. I am delighted to see that the Explorer, with the new chronergy movement ,has gained or lost absolutely no time at all in the past five days since I bought it. I also agree that my OP 39 was too big for my 6 1/2 inch wrist ;the new 36 mil has taken some time to get used to, but now is feeling perfect.

  • @imtherealjoeyd

    This was a great review! And I appreciate the format! I'm a "accuracy does matter", my khaki king is holding strong between 1 and 2 seconds per day average (depending on the position it's stored in, similar to your experience with the explorer). So I completely understand the frustration of it being 4 seconds off daily.

    I had the same experience with the bracelet at first... then I discovered the three micro adjustments inside the clasp channel. Yes, just like the Seiko micro adjustments you were talking about, the difference is the hole don’t go all the through, they are just indented inside the clasp channel. I found a snug, but not too snug fit using these adjustments. My watch is from Nov. 2016 so I’m not thinking this is something they added later on.

  • @JustBlueFish

    @JustBlueFish

    6 жыл бұрын

    I was aware of the micro adjustment instide the clasp. I still never could find a comfortable fit. I think it had to do with the combination of the somewhat harsh edges of the bracelet links, which would bite into the skin, and the difficulty of adjusting the size.

    Good video and very useful as I’m thinking about getting one. Re the hand wobble on setting - I have a Datejust 41 and it does the same thing, but in a really clever way that I assume is deliberate. The play between the hand and the crown operates only in one direction - implying to me that the hand is sprung against one side of the play range. This means that in one setting direction the hand will move back away from the set position after you release, and in the other direction not at all. Maybe I give Rolex too much credit here, but I’ve always assumed that this is a feature.

    I've watched a few of your videos in the past. Thanks very much for being straight-forward in your assessment of this watch. I've been thinking it might be my forever piece as well, but the issues you raise are the same I have with other watches I own. I.E. bracelets without on-the-fly adjustability don't work well if one is active. I own an SBDC029 and love it, but even with the micro adjustments have a hard time finding a sweet spot that works in most uses cases from casual, to swim to workout. All of those cases result in a different wrist diameter. I often wear it on rubber instead, which is a shame because the bracelet is so comfortable when it's 'right.' I broke down and bought a MM300 clasp, we'll see. Thanks again.

    Nice video. I am sorry to hear your grail did not turn out as you hoped for. But maybe there is another high-end brand that will better suit you for that top watch to keep forever. For me it was the Datejust and I love it. My only issue was deciding on the SS vs TT which the gap in price was a substantial 3k. Growing up, I was always ok with the idea of SS because my dad had one and it had a nice champagne dial. The issue in the current models is ref. 116234 only has blk, wht, blu and slvr. And some photos make silver look like champagne but in person it is not, which takes away from having that bit of flair. This made me desire TT a bit more but I cant swing that no time soon so I got the silver dial. I love it but there exist that small itch.

    Excellent video. All watch reviews should model themselves after this one. Thanks! Three different Rolex references didn’t work out for me. Eventually I found one that did. But I completely could relate to some of the struggles of wanting to like the watch, like you did, but coming to reality that it was time to move on. Thank you again!

    I know what you're saying... it's a slippery slope to choose a watch you like thinking maybe, ô maybe, you might be able to make money in the future. Older Air-Kings are still selling for cheap even though the reference is discontinued, so I'm not under any illusions here. But what I can say. I like it and I wear it! (I used to own -- in chronological order -- Rolex ref. 16700, 1675, 16570, 116610LV -- all sold!)

  • @JustBlueFish

    @JustBlueFish

    Ya I definitely wasn’t saying expect to make money on the Air King, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns into a future classic either. In either case the main concern should be that you’re happy with it. In regards to the older models I think the big difference is that they weren’t really all that unique, and the current reference really has a special character that I think makes it stand out more than previous generations. That said hang on to it if you’re enjoying it.

    thanks for a great review. I especially agree about the antireflex - the flat crystal often looks a bit dull without it. My biggest issues with the exp 1 are the overall proportions, which just don't feel as perfect as with 1016 and the polish job, which is a bit too shiny for my taste. I'm currently torn between this one, the 16570 and Panerai 574. I'm actually curious, what do you think about PAM 574... I think you may like that one as well.

    Thanks for watching. I agree the proportions of the new 39mm Explorer are off. It’s kinda large for such a simple design or something. They should have left well enough alone and kept the old size with the new technology maybe. The Panerai 574 looks cool, I’ve never given them a serious look. Would like to see one in person.

    I never had any comfort issue with my Explorer, honestly. The main positive is that is oozes quality. Period. Absence of AR treatment and this smudge and scratch magnet aspect of the case are the main issues in my opinion. Plus the fact that it sits uncomfortably between being a sports watch so nicely polished and so expensive you never do any outdoors activity with and not being, almost by definition being named "Explorer", a dress watch at all. It has become over the years the watch equivalent of an expensive SUV you never drive off-road.

The PO bracelet is very comfortable with rounded edges and with the new micro adjustment clasp you can get a perfect fit at any stage of the day..and they are beautiful watches with a stack of tech to the movement that gives excellent value for $4800! Try one on and you will see...i am an owner of rolex explorer and a hulk..and although the hulk is very comfortable due to the glidlock system , the most comfortable watch i have is my 8500 42mm PO with the micro adjustable clasp i ordered from omega which gives me the same fit as the all new POs...worth checking out.

    @justbluefish Hey man! I really like your videos, I have been watching them for few months now, first I want to say that I am quite surprised that you don't have more subscribers by now but I am really certain that it will come very soon, so don't stop! Like you, I have been in love with the explorer for several month, being only 22 years old I couldn't justify buying a new Explorer 214270. I started looking at used ones, I came a cross 114270 36mm. After about a month a got an amazing deal that I won't be revealing here but I got it a month a go. Really, I couldn't be happier. I think one of your problems with the explorer and the main reason you sold it is because it was too expensive for you to justify what you get from a watch and that's why I am advising you to go into the used market and find a good deal there. Despite the fact that you get a great value for the money, when you turn around and sell it, you might even earn money. Consider that, I think you'll be very happy in that path. Stay safe. Cheers.

    I agree about the +/- 2 sec per day rating. My Air King had the same rating of +4 per day while being advertised as +/- 2. The Watchmaker at Wempe told me that it averages +/- 2 in all positions but on a wrist it will not be +/-2. I have a seamaster COSC which was actually just as accurate as my Air King. So I am not sold on that rating Rolex is advertising.

    In regards to the scratches, I've noticed it with all the new style rolex watches. Which is why I went back to 5 digit models. I had owned a couple 5 digit, then went to a 214270 and noticed it scratched MUCH easier. Not sure if its the steal or the finer brushing they're using. And its not just me, I've heard from many that their 6 digits pick up scratches quicker than older rolex. The steel to me looks brighter, than the darker 904 of previous generations. Regardless, went back to the much more toolish and robust 114270.

    Thanks for giving me a LOT to think about. I’ve been an Omega - Tudor - Cartier guy. Have never bit the bullet & bought a Rolex. Have been studying the heck out of them & have narrowed my focus to the Explorer and a Stainless Steel Datejust 41 with the 18k white gold bezel. Granted there’s a $4000 delta between the two, but that’s my focus. You’ve given me a lot to think to think about on two of your “hates”. The 904L Stainless Steel is not the holy grail that Rolex promotes. I’ve done a lot of research on steel. The real differential on 904L over 316L is resistance to chemical based corrosion. They’re both equally strong. Yes, the 904L is supposed to polish like jewelry as you mentioned. But it’s more susceptible to scratches. Your experienced proved that out. And I hate scratches, which is why I wanted the serrated 14k bezel over the polished smooth bezel. Plus I like the looks of the 14k better. The other thing that I had hoped would be an asset is the 5mm extension. None of my Omega’s or Tudor’s have that. And I thought this is a perfect solution. UNTIL, I heard your commentary. Again, thanks for all your keen insights. By the way, what did you buy to replace your Explorer? And did it hold its value, as I hear Rolex does better than any brand. Especially the sport / tool watches.

    I had the same problems with the bracelet, I've been 3 times at the jeweler in my first week. We ended up removing one link and get the maximum size from the clasp position. Now it fits perfectly when its cold and it fits perfectly on a hot day with the easy link. I have to admit, that after training, its always too small, hot, cold, easy link on and off but thats just one or 2 hours but I hate it. The Submariners glidelock should be on every Rolex. Accuracy: In my first month it was +4, then it changed to +2.2 and after 2 months its steady on +1.8 each day. I dont know if money can buy something more accurate than this, AFAIK Patek has a tolerance of +5 and Omega is just ETA anyway, dont know about AP.

    Really sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with your Explorer. I picked up mine a little after you and have been in love ever since. A few comments: Based upon the timing variance and emerging rotor noise you described, I strongly suspect you had a defective movement on your hands. I've owned my watch for several months now and it's been bang-on a half second fast per day (faster on wrist and slower off but it averages out). My understanding is that Rolex is happy to take the watch in for servicing when under warranty if you're running significantly out of their +\- 2 seconds spec. My opinion is that your AD did you a disservice in not advising you to send it in... especially after the rotor noise started up 1 no way that's normal. Next comment is on the bracelet... are you aware that there are three micro-adjustment positions in the clasp? You don't have to only rely on the quick link extension, which I agree is to large a leap at 5mm. You can adjust about 3mm(?) and I found it easy to get a decent fit via a combo of link removal and micro-adjustments. Anyways, I enjoy your videos very much and best of luck on your search for your next forever watch 👍

    Yeah I tried adjusting the 3 micro adjustments positions in the clasp, even bought the expensive spring bar tweezers tool. I never could find a comfortable position. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.

    Hey man I am new to this but how do you realize how many seconds fast or slow your watch is per day? Like how do you measure it

    @@fahimmosharrof7209 You can get the most accurate (aside from taking into a watch shop of Rolex dealer) by using an app on your smart phone. There are several, but I recommend one called Twixt. You take a picture of the watch and line up the hands on the watch. Then after at least 24 hours you go back and repeat the process and it will tell you to the 10th of a second how fast or slow your watch is running. I think the app is like no more than $5.

    @@fahimmosharrof7209 go to time.gov, zoom in big, then put your watch near the screen, focus the second hand on your watch while still tracking the time on your screen.

    I feel I should first buy a Smiths Everest and then if I enjoy wearing it for a year, then I should get an Explorer.
