    I have both. I have a two tone Explorer and a silver dial OP. I couldn’t decide which one to get so I got both. The OP is my everyday piece. Silver pretty much goes with anything. I see the Explorer as a sporty yet classy timepiece. The OP as classy yet sporty timepiece. I’m also a sucker for symmetry so this is why I have time only watches.

    I found the sunburst dial is what attracted me to buy the OP36 instead of the Explorer I. Certainly a lot of variations and funs to see under light.

    That's an incredible comparison! And a brave one, because it's generally considered sacrilege to say the Explorer looks anything less than perfect in every respect. Although I love my Explorer II (same vintage as your Explorer, same bracelet, and black dial), which is my only Rolex, if I had to get by on only one watch it would probably be the OP, or maybe Datejust. Neither, however, are proper 'dress watches', at least not in my book.

  • @sc1

    Sometimes the Explorer gets into a cult status with some people, so I need to remind myself to be realistic about it. I still like the Explorer better than the OP, but its not perfect, and would still want other options to wear. Datejust is my most dressiest watch, but I'm just saying in relative terms. I don't have occasions to wear anything more formal.

    I couldn't decide between the Explorer 36mm model and the OP 36 mm with the white Dial, so I ended up eventually getting both. They both are amazing watches, and you really can't go wrong with either. I got the white dial one since I didn't want 2 black dials because I would probably only wear the explorer if that were the case. If only they made a 36mm OP with the OP 39's face. That would be close to the perfect OP watch.

    I have an Explorer 36mm, the 114270. It’s a great watch and the bracelet is fine for me, I like the lightness of the watch. The OP is nice but seems too similar to the Explorer. I realise you got the OP first but I would consider changing it for a white dial version if it was me.

  • @sc1

    You’re probably right. If I could do it over again, I would probably get the Explorer 36mm first, then get the OP in a white dial. I really like that particular shade of white. But that’s just not how things worked out, and I don’t really want to be bothered with switching out my OP right now. I ended up getting the OP black dial first because I thought it could take the place of an Explorer too.

    I had the 36mm op in blue with the 3,6,9 dial, I really liked the watch and I got it as it was the closest thing to a modern 36mm explorer. Anyway, I sold it after a year as I kept going back to the 36mm explorer, I don't think there is any substitute for that watch unless Rolex make a new version in 36mm. I think it is close to perfection for a watch.

    I'm in a very similar situation to yourself. I purchased my first "luxury" watch in 2019 for my 30th. It was a toss up between a Datejust or an Explorer. I opted for the new Datejust 36mm 126234 black dial fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. Absolutely beautiful watch, amazing build quality and all the benefits of buying brand new (warranty etc). The fact that I was able to get a considerable discount through a friend on a brand new Rolex sealed the deal! My conundrum with the Explorer was that my preference for my first watch was brand new. The build quality on the new 39mm were obviously fantastic but the proportions were all wrong to my eye. I tried on a 36mm 114270 the same day and although I preferred it to the 39mm I was shocked at the difference in build quality which put me off. Even the Seiko Sarb 033 I was wearing at the time felt superior. I honestly have no regrets about my Datejust however something about the 36mm explorer keeps drawing me back. I'm still tempted, but would it be silly to have two 36mm Rolex with black dials? Would it be to similar? Also I have a the Seiko Sarb 033 (my first ever mechanical each l watch) which kind of fills the role of an explorer making it even harder to justify.

    @@nlslmmns hmm, maybe your right. I keep looking at the similarities (stainless steel, black dial and 36mm). But they're also very different. The Datejust has a jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel and the Cyclops. All this makes it quite dressy and even a little blingy. The Explorer is more casual with the Oyster bracelet, smooth bracelet and no date function. My worry is that the obvious similarities would mean that the two watches cover too much of the same ground. But maybe another way of looking at things is that they compliment each other, like brother's that bear a resemblance but with very different personalities?

  • @sc1

    @sc1

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@mazrashid6549 That Datejust black dial/ fluted bezel/ jubilee is beautiful. Very premium looking, but very formal. The Explorer 36mm is a much more understated and low key and can be worn as a casual sports watch. I think it's fine to have both. I didn't like the thought of the inferior bracelet at first, but I got over it. It's just different, it has some character, and just goes with the territory and belongs on that watch. Explorer 39 case and dial are too big.

    The superiority of the OP finish is very obvious. If you're a thinking man, you'll buy the OP because its a new 2018 release, cheaper, Rolex warranty, it wears a gold crown vs Explorer's tiny painted crown. I’ll explain what I mean about “history” (though I may be incorrect, too!). I think the Explorer is more linked to Mt Everest than the Perpetual, just because of marketing/ advertising alone. Most people associate them together, even though it may not be technically correct, and in fact, Tenzing Norway wore the Perpetual. Also, The Explorer was worn by Ian Fleming (pictures to show it), and it can be assumed that this was the watch he intended for the literary James Bond to wear (actual model was not specified in the novels), although the cinematic James Bond wore the Submariner (because the director wore one).
