Did I buy the wrong Rolex Explorer? Old vs. New

@@YoureTerrific Me IRL. Bought my 114270 a bit before the 124270 release. I have since whittled a collection down to nothing, and I can safely say I wear an Explorer every day. After having felt the 124270, I am in love with the tapered bracelet. But I've since added a "glidelock homage" which I found online onto my Explorer's bracelet--which I must add works really well--and as I have solid end-links, the bracelet feels solid enough that easy-link isn't really much of a selling point. I honestly have no idea.

And might I add that you incorporate wrist shots! Not only super close ups of the piece but how it wears on the wrist connected to a body. It makes a difference when we can see the proportions. Well done.

I owned both of them. The 124270 sat differently on my wrist, and it felt thicker and chunkier than the 114270. Ultimately, I felt warm and fuzzy every time I wore the the 114270, so I sold the 124270 and got the older model serviced at RSC, which made it look and feel brand new again. And the best part was that the crystal on the 114270 was scratched, so I paid ~$100 to have it replaced. Guess what? RSC put a new anti-reflective crystal on it! 😀 I sometimes miss the full lumed numbers on the newer model, but other than that…I love my 114270.

@@jonwlo When I bought it (used), the original crystal was scratched, so it's not really fair for me to say that the new crystal is better than the old one. It seems slightly less reflective than the older crystal. If light hits it at a certain angle, you'll still get a glare, and it's the same with the 124270.

I've owned both. Sold the 124270 after a few months due to most of the things that you highlight. However, I have a 6.5inch wrist and I didn't find the 124270 to be comfortable. I tried swapping in/out links, different micro adjustment holes, easy-link open/closed and I just couldn't get the right fit. Reasons I prefer the 114270: + the numerals and hour markers are smaller which I think makes the watch looks classier. When I look at the new explorer, all I see is lume. When I look at the 114270, it's the white gold surrounds that catch my eye. I prefer the finer text also. + lighter bracelet due to the hollow centre links means I don't need to get as perfect a fit on the watch. It's comfortable for me hanging a bit loose where as with the extra weight of the newer watch I found it to be uncomfortable moving around on the wrist. If you want to get a perfect fit you're more likely to get it on the 114270 (6 micro adjustment holes vs 3 on the 124270) + the thinner bezel and wider bracelet looks better IMO and blends the watch into the bracelet instead of making the watch head look bigger on the newer one as you pointed out. + cheaper :) As for the improvements of the newer one: *Movement: My 2009 Explorer is +1s/day. I don't need 70hrs of power reserve, especially for a time only watch. *AR coating: The lack of AR on the 114270 is a non-issue for me. Infact, perhaps it's part of the reason why I like the dial of the 114270 better, as more light can pass and catch on the white gold surrounds? *Bracelet: No doubt about it, a modern Rolex bracelet feels fantastic to hold in the hands, but on the wrist, the extra bit of 'flex' from the older bracelets leaves it much more comfortable on the wrist. Again, the new clasp might look superior but I prefer the older one with 6 micro adjustment holes. Easy-link is good in theory but 5mm extension is too much. *Lume: Overrated. Looks good in a lumeshot but the only time I would find it useful is if I wake up in the night and it has usually faded by that point anyway.

Ive handled both, own the new one. They are both excellent. The new one is definitely a modern take on a classic, where the old has some charm that can't be replicated with modern Rolex materials and design. I think they knocked it out of the park with the new one, but that's just one guys opinion. I can see personal preference leaning people one way or the other. For me, the 19mm lug width, while tough for straps, just looks better proportionally on a 36mm watch. But the update that they made with the 214270 was exactly what I wanted, minus inflating the whole watch(case size, font, etc). So the 124270 was a god sent. All your points can be validated depending on the person. Moral of the story for me, is I got one at retail while the 114270 was selling for as much or more. Crazy times in the market made for a no brainer for me. They are both excellent. 🙌

I wish I had kept the latter but had been wearing it as a dress watch and replaced it with the a Patek 3796. Ideally, Rolex would revive the 1016, keeping the printed dial, rounded Arabics, proportions but with a SEL bracelet and better shock-absorbing but things are not ideal. Great vid!

Oooh, I didn't realize the older Explorer didn't have the numerals lumed. I definitely appreciate the older version's not-so-bold-look opposed to the thicker schtuff on the new one. Looks more elegant that way. Shame they didn't stick with 20mm and they didn't have to go with such an extreme taper. Tough pickings between the two for sure, but it's pretty much a 1st world problem and you can't actually go wrong with either!

Much as I appreciate the new model -- it's a wonderful watch -- I'm happy with the Explorer I have, very happy. It's a watch that has grown on me. It has my wrist. It's my most expensive watch, but also my beater. I don't mind nicking it, knocking it around. It's somehow incorruptible, always okay, drawing you in with that deep black dial, rimmed markers, and gorgeous hands...especially the seconds hand that has exquisite proportions. I'm never giving it up, and I look forward to handing it down when the time comes.

Great video as always! Only push back I would have is to say that the 32xx movement is a clear upgrade. On paper, sure, it has benefits. But its long term reliability is still a big unknown. There are many, many reports of chronic timekeeping issues impacting this family of movement and to date Rolex does not seem to have a confirmed fix. I don't think we know yet whether this will be a movement that we can all rely on 10, 20 years down the road, or if this will end up being the rare misstep from the crown.

I purchased my “vintage” 2002 114270 two weeks ago. Needless to say, I’m smitten. It gets so many things right compared to the 124270: the smaller indexes, the green lume, the 20mm lugs, lighter font, and lighter bracelet that doesn’t taper as much. Sure, I’d appreciate if the smaller 114270 Arabic indexes were ACTUALLY lumed, the fancy rehaut, and I wouldn’t mind 70 hrs of power reserve. But those are so minor, I am very glad for my decision. Besides, part of the fun of watch collecting to me is, after identifying the watch you want, hunting for a great deal with box and papers. I ended up finding an unpolished 2002 K series with box and papers via Instagram. Happy watch wearing!

The difference is immense when you put them next to each other. Of course, you can still tell the difference even viewing them separated although you couldn’t probably point out the details but this video has clarified the differences in a second.

Cool video. The size of the numerals on yours definitely seem more dialed-in to me (pun not intended), but I sure do like the lume on the newer model. I'd agree though that overall yours seems more refined.

Awesome job putting in a multitude of pocket and arm crossed shots. To offen we only get to see the watch from 12 inches away as worn. When we get to see how a piece looks from afar and how other people see it some much need perspective is provided.

That channel cut between the lugs on the new watch is interesting. Do the end links have a matching tab? That looks like a good way to stabilize end links so they don't move up and down

Nice comparison! I got the latest iteration of the 114270 in the best condition I could find at the time because I felt sure Rolex would never produce another 36mm Explorer again. Yet, less than a year later, Rolex released the new 124270. Having seen the difference you highlighted, I don’t regret my purchase at all. I’m a bit of lume fanatic, so I would have preferred the lumed numerals and the adjust clasp is a nice feature on the newer model. However, the bracelet on the older model is quite comfortable and wider width looks much better IMO.

Same! However, I had about 3 months of bliss with my 114270 before Rolex dropped the news of their updated explorer. I still have yet to get a chance to do a side-by-side, but I've had no regrets. This video reaffirms that.

Thanks to your comparison video and having experience both Explorers in hand, I went with the 114270. Sure the movement is a generation behind and the clasp is not as sturdy as the new one.. but the overall feel and package of the 114270 is perfect. I just love how the older dial looks. The proportion feels right. I don't like how the rehaut looks on the newer Explorer.. it makes it even more busier than it has to be. The older 114270 wears beautifully with the broader and less aggressive tapering bracelet. It feels like a proper luxury/tool watch fusion. Been on my wrist since. What an absolute joy!

The older one is my daily wearer and I love it to bits. I had a chance to buy the new one but side by side the things that bothered me were the larger numerals and bracelet taper that makes it look small on the wrist. The 20mm oyster bracelet of the 112470 makes the look iconic and the longer lugs make the bracelet look integrated. The older one also has a vintage vibe to it that the new one just can’t pull off. The font is also smaller which makes it more understated.

@@crunkmonkeys770 I have had my 124270 ..36mm since September, the watch looks amazing, and I love it. The latest design bracelet is very comfortable with a much improved sturdier clasp, and the 70 hour power reserve is nice to have.

I agree with the vintage vibe, the new dial with crown at 6 o'clock just kinda make it disassociated with rolex heritage even though it has been reverted to the classic size. I realized that the old dial design is what make it so nostalgic and familiar, something that you look at everyday on your wrist.

36mm..... meh....... Explorer...... Nuh uh....... not for me. But I can genuinely see how much you're enjoying yours through your video and it brings a smile to my face. I don't get the Explorer craze, but as a WIS, I can/do appreciate it. 31xx movement is probably safer too! Lot's of fuss about the 32xx movement. Oh and the newer one is better and it's def a women's watch..... OR...... is it? 😉

I ended up getting the 124270 earlier this year.. I love the newer crystal and longer power reserve. Heck even the bracelet is awesome- its robust yet somehow just disappears on the wrist. I love it. Maybe its the taper. At first I was a bit thrown off by the thicc lume on the new one, but now it looks just right! I love mine, and if anyone has an opportunity to buy one- do so, you won't regret it.

You did the right thing. Michael’s watch has many real improvements which you would appreciate in use. However, why not try a simple test. Line up a nice 1016, yours and Michael’s, in chronological order from left to right, an Explorer timeline. You will then clearly see where the spirit of the early Explorers leaves the watch, between the second watch, yours, and the third, Michael’s. I think it’s as simple as that. All the earlier beauty and subtlety has evaporated, with the larger, bolder script, numerals and markers on the dial, and the open spaces in between have necessarily shrunk. In short, the one Rolex I would buy and wear has suffered a terrible fate: Modern Rolex Gross-Out. As this will keep on gnawing at you, I suggest you treat yourself to a lovely 1016, which doesn’t have to be an ultra-rare version. Then sell your 114270 and buy the new one as your normal, practical watch. You can then appreciate each for its respective virtues. Technical Ecstasy vs. Soul.

Thanks for the analysis. I think you have the right watch because it’s the one that you have, and there is an argument to be content with what we have and not letting regret or desire eat away at you, especially when the nuances are so small. I’m a fan of both but would sooner diversify to a GMT (a guy can dream right?) than get the other, and both Explorers are great everyday watches that you can wear without worry and still buy it with the intention of passing it down to another generation.

I used to own both the 114270 and 124270. Eventually I kept the 114270 and sold the other. The dial on the new one looks cluttered by the larger dial elements and also the larger bezel didn't help.

I can’t wear a bracelet loose so I imagine the new bracelet is far superior but in your video I think the dial looks nicer on the old one. I would be curious to see them both in the flesh to see how they look. I’ve only tried on one explorer and it left me cold, maybe I could not ignore the gold on that version. Ps your watch looks to be in amazing condition

Great video. I own a 14270 and a 124270. Love them both, but prefer the new one. Effortless to wear with a fantastic bracelet. Easy link is very useful on a hot day (I wear it loose to start with, but my wrist still expands in the heat and humidity of the summer). Fantastic lume and accuracy (consistently runs - 0.5 sec/day). 36mm Explorers are great watches, they are the perfect everyday Rolex if you have the wrist for them.
