Roland TR-8s: Comprehensive Feature Walkthrough and My final Thoughts about it

Hello my Friends. In this last Video with the Roland TR-8s i wanna go through most of the Features that i find relevant and at the same time i show you the general Workflow on the TR-8s. I show you how these Features work, how they sound and what you can do with them. Since this is a very long Video, you can find Soft-Links to the various Sections in the Top-Corner.
I hope this Video answers all the Questions you might have! If it helped you out, let me know in the Comments. And dont forget to leave a like if you enjoyed this Video!
All the best,

    In the first half of the Video (and partly into the second half) it's hard to see the Steps on the Sequencer due to the Lighting. Sorry for that! These Buttons are very shiny and i did not noticed the Result on Video before i was already done "filming".

    When importing samples from the SD Card, you can preview the currently selected sample by pressing the SAMPLE button. It is flashing to indicate it is active. You can even hold the SAMPLE button down and scroll through the sounds and they will automatically play as you select each new sound. This feature was added in Firmware 1.10, August 2018, after umonox's video was made.

    There’s a major bug with the Roland TR8s regarding Program Change over midi. Although it may not be important to most single users of the TR8s, if you plan on syncing it up as either master or slave, the following bug is Still present on the machine. The BUG is When either sending or receiving a Program change message via a midi clock, the TR8S slightly lags behind when the program change is executed. Yet when a program change is made manually on the TR8s, there is no problem. It’s been a real pain for me, because the machine itself is amazing.

    Just got it and I must say if you want a drum machine this does every drum sound you could ever want and if for some crazy reason it does not you can add samples of whatever drum sounds you want. I messed around with the digitakt and I was not happy with how long it takes just to make simple things happen but it does do many things but if you want a very good drum machine the tr8s blows it out the water but if you had both that would be the ultimate setup and they would compliment each other perfectly

    I appreciate this video. I just got a TR-8S and I'm finding it really fun and intuitive (mostly, although I did have trouble uploading samples at first...still sort of figuring it out...). But, yeah, I can see your concern/desire about the lack of automation. I feel like so far, making a few samples and then tweaking them with the onboard EFX has been great, and the ability to play live with tweaky, more esoteric samples will be fun. Like you say, it seems they very much designed it for playing live.

  • @umonox

    P-Locking is Motion Rec; its just an alternative way to enter these Motion Sequences. There's only one Motion Sequence (Automation) for the CTRL-Knob itself. So you dont loose your Automation once you assign a new parameter - but you cant have multiple automation Lanes per Parameter because of this.

    I understand where you are coming from, but I will respectfully disagree. Personally, when I'm playing a kit with ACB tones, I like knowing that I'm "playing" a 909 (or whichever drum machine it is) with the same sound options.

  • @umonox

    Fair enough. I can also understand where you are coming from. From this POV it makes sense, of course. But additional Parameters would still be nice for those not necessarily seeking for the originals. Because, lets be frank: In modern music the Originals are always edited quite heavily. Their Sound is still there - but better, more powerful, more versatile. This is what i would expect from a Machine in 2018 ;-) I would say: Roland should bring the Parameter Selection for the ACB Tones inline with the Parameter Selection for the Samples - and there we go! We would then have Bit Reduction, Stereo Spread and a Filter to work on these Tones - but we mustnt use them if we dont want to. Its better this way than not having the Parameters at hand when you need them i think.

    @Dennis: Motion Sequence a Parameter you've assigned to the CTRL-Knob of a Track. Now swap out the Parameter assigned to this Control Knob and check if the Parameter you had assigned before still has its Automation going. And whether you can add new Automation with a new Parameter, that doesnt affect the prior one, or not. If this is working, the issue i mentioned has been fixed! But i highly doubt it.

    hi, why did you send it back ? And if the raison is because it's not an elektron, do you think it can do the job for someone looking for a drum machine for a home studio ?

  • @umonox

    @umonox

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi. I sent it back because i cant program complex Patterns on it - due to the fact that i cannot Motion Sequence several Custom Assigned Parameters at once. Only that one Parameter which is currently assigned to the CTRL-Knob. This is a major Drawback and should NOT be so damn limiting. Apart from that i was quite happy with this thing though! I like the Effects; especially that customizable Master Effect - and the Scatter also comes in handy for live purposes. Overall i can still recommend it to those that never owned an Elektron Machine (and therefore dont got used to the luxury of their fantastic Sequencer). Go ahead, just try it out! If its not for you, send it back :-)

    Hey, großartiges Video - vielen Dank. Der Support von Roland bei der Installation der Tr-8s ist unglaublich schlecht & als Neuling im Bereich externen Gears habe ich große Probleme bei der korrekten Aufsetzung. Mittlerweile bekomme ich es hin, die einzelnen Instrumente als einzelne Spuren in Ableton auf dem PC aufzunehmen und das Start Signal für die Tr8s über meine DAW zu schicken. Dabei nutze ich die Tr8s als externe Soundkarte. Allerdings habe ich ein riesen Problem, dass ich nicht gelöst bekomme - vielleicht kannst du mir helfen. Läuft nämlich die Tr8s kann ich keine anderen Spuren in meinen Projekten solo schalten, der Sound der Groovebox bleibt genauso prominent. Irgendwo muss es also an meinem Routing hapern oder die Funktion zur Lösung des Problems steckt im Utility-Menü der Tr8s aber ich verzweifle so langsam bei der Lösung dieses Problems. Lieben Gruß & danke für die Wahnsinnsarbeit, die du in deine Tutorials packst :)

  • @Dedabile

    Because the Tune Knob was not working properly as i've tested that out. It has a strange Range -127 to 127. Hard to set a proper Pitch that way and as far as i remember it was also just Fine Tuning and did not even reach an Octave Up/Down. But im unable to check that out real quick since i've sent the TR-8s back. Coarse Tune is what delivered proper Note Pitching. Thats why i used it!

  • @umonox

    @umonox

    Hi Jörg. Das hast du falsch verstanden ;-) Assign A ist die Stereo-Summe von Ausgang 1 und 2. Die Sounds, die auf Mix stehen, gehen direkt zum Main-Out und der wird hier via USB aufgenommen. An der TR-8s an sich ist der Main-Out gar nicht angeschlossen. Passt also alles :-)

    a few things that come to mind: - the TR has detailed ACB modelling of the classic 808/909/707/606 sounds, the MC just uses static samples of these machines. this might not be a big deal to you though. - the TR has individual controls (faders/knobs) for each instrument in a kit. - the TR has fx per instrument in a kit, the MC uses one "global" fx for the kit. - the TR can have a different tempo for each pattern, the MC uses the same tempo for all clips/patterns in a project.
