I'm one of your fans who asked you to review the RD2000. I've had mine for 16 months and I love it so much. I play it for hours a day. My only regret is that it doesn't have a music stand. But after playing so many other digital pianos, when I played this one, I knew almost immediately that this was the one for me. I feel like I'm playing a real acoustic piano. I haven't played another one that comes close to this one. I went and bought it at the store because I didn't want it shipped and you showed why I was smart to do so. I play my piano exclusively with headphones and I'm sure you'll try it with headphones. The sound is out of this world. And, yes, there are 1,100 sounds available and you can mix them together. I'm not good with math, but I'll bet there are billions of combinations, since you can mix 8 sounds together at once, if you choose to do so -- and with those sliders, you can vary the levels of each sound. Also, as people below have stated, you can adjust the sound (EQ, etc.) -- even down to individual notes. And if you're happy with a particular combination of instruments, you can save them and easily recall it. I'm so glad that your first impression is very good. I was hoping that it would be and I figured that you'd love it. I'm really looking forward to your in-depth review -- good or bad. I'll be loving it either way, but I do want your honest opinion. the roland damper pedal 'flap' rotates 180 to provide a heel grip. It works great, even on slippy wooden floors

It's an excellent feature, and it makes it the only pedal I've ever used that doesn't slide further and further during concerts.

@@kevinr8258 it works on any surface because its your heal (on the rubber) stopping the unit slipping. Its a good pedal, better than most.

I like this keyboard. I think the packaging did it’s job to protect the product through rough transit. Another great tutorial!

As a Roland owner, I really enjoyed watching this. Can't wait for the in-depth review. I agree with Mr. Spector, don't ever use Greyhound. When I was in my twenties, I used to drive a delivery truck in the British Columbia Lower Mainland, and I remember taking some large parcels to the bus depot to be shipped out of town. The parcels were put in large wooden bins, about 4 feet deep, each marked for a specific destination. One of my parcels was clearly marked FRAGILE, and I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched Buddy lift it over the edge of the bin and drop it the full 4' straight to the bottom of the empty bin. I winced, got the signature I needed, and got the heck out of there.

You twist the rubber bottom on the pedal. That way the pedal doesn’t slide away from You when you are playing. Your heel on the piece of rubber anchors the pedal.

I really like my RD-2000. For the full piano experience, you may want to get the optional Roland RPU-3 pedals. Also, make sure your unit is upgraded to the latest firmware, which is currently version 1.5. There are also some free patch sets you can download and install into the memory of the unit. Looking forward to your full review.

James, I also play a Roland, but really due for a newer one....a need to upgrade soon (I still play an RD-700). I think the beauty of the RD-2000 is it's sound modeling and adjustability. The standard piano sound isn't my favorite but you can EQ and modify like crazy just to your liking!

One lovely thing about these modelled ones is you can customize the bejeebers out of it. Want more mids, or less? More bass? or less? More resonant? Less? Not just EQ, but everything down to the damper sound and key sound can be tweaked.

Regarding boxing, I was pretty impressed with the boxing of the Roland FP-30 I recently purchased, as on inside of the top box flaps it showed how to remove the inner supports. As I try to keep boxes to ship things when I move, this will help a lot with repacking it. BTW, bought it at a shop - it's great that some shops also have online which shows you how much stock they have at their individual shops so you can know that it you visit you'll be walking out with what you want.

Thanks for the unboxing. I have this keyboard and really like it as the build quality is good. The action is nice but not quite as fast as the baby grand I also practice on. I have 10 other keyboards and only one of them had a music stand included, so I didn’t expect this to have one and just use a Manhasset that I would rather use anyway.

I bought a Roland AT350 Combo from a dealer in Canada. It was a showroom model and had never been sold. It shipped across Canada and down into New York. When it arrived, it had a ton more damage on the box. Inside, the organ was scratched up where a lift or hand truck had pierced the box, the front rail was dented, the top was gouged and the screen was cracked. I sold it, at a loss and bought one on private market - that one I drove to pick up.

I always bring my own headphone to the store and use that.

I don't actually see the music stand issue as a big thing at all. I never really liked them. Always preferred using a separate music stand or a lecturn if I was using my laptop at rehearsals for viewing charts. Just my opinion. :) By the way, great review and great content! Keep it coming.

If it was on one of those tilted racks at the music store that would explain why the action felt lousy when you first demoed it. Some weighted actions just need to be straight so gravitational forces can do their thing with them.

Thanks for the review James. I've been thinking hard about buying one of these one day. I have to say the lack of a music stand would probably be a deal breaker for me. I recently bought a Roland RD-700sx. I really like the feel of the action on it, but the sound modelling is pretty dated now, I think. You certainly know after half an hour of playing it that it is a synthesizer. It took me weeks to discover the hundreds of general midi sounds on the last button, as they are labeled Perc/gm or something like that, and the first 20 sounds or so are just random percussion. There are also quite a lot of bugs in the RD-700sx computer code that runs the thing. Nothing terribly serious, but still a bit of a nuisance. But it's a massive upgrade on my old keyboard which only had a handful of sounds and keys that were making horrible creaking noises which were getting worse every week.

I bought a RD-800 a couple of years ago and had a very similar experience. I found the action incredible and the piano synth... ok. I've been flipping back and between the RD-700 and RD-800's main grand patches - whenever one starts bugging me too much I switch to the other. As for the RD-2000's desirable Piano modeling, you might want to take a look a "Pianoteq". It is a Piano-modeling synth software for Windows/Mac/Linux/RaspberryPi. I've been using that lately and really love the sound! So my RD-800 now is more and more relegated to being just a MIDI controller. I don't know how it compares to the RD-2000's modeling engine, but on the plus side I didn't have to take a second mortgage to buy a license of Pianoteq.

Just found your channel, subscribed. Been watching earlier videos and, 3 months ago, you setup a VOX Continental and promised some mixed songs that were popular back in the day from the Doors and the Animals, possibly more. When are you going to do these? I love the sound of the VOX and the Fender Rhodes Suitcase, as well as the early Rhodes Stage models ( I also like the Hammond B3 sound for gospel music and blues BTW) mostly because of the iconic groups that used these in some of their very popular classic songs. Please do a full song concert with the instruments mentioned of those classics that you teased us with in the older video. You do play so well. This Roland is used by a lot of groups as well, but the older instruments have such grittier sound and work so well with the recorded pieces of those classics.

I am still on track to record classic songs on the vintage equipment I have acquire, just so much to do. I am presently uploading a video every other day and have months worth I have filmed, but yet to edit. I am also in the process of the keyboard comparison that will be extensive. @@ThePianoforever Thanks for responding. Yes, and they are quality videos, very interesting. You have so many things going on, I understand. Fantastic rendition of HOTRS, love that Hammond sound. Deep Purple used a B3 on stage (I think it was a B3). I used to play HOTRS on guitar back in the '70s (I have lost my chops on guitar though, way out of practice). You, however, are a very gifted musician.

I've had 4 or 5 items I purchased on eBay, shipped via USPS, that, when I got them, they were totally destroyed. USPS claimed innocence on 3 of them. Don't know how seeing the tire track on the package was that of a USPS route vehicle.

James, I have an RD-2000 and enjoy it very much. BUT, I have found nothing that compares to a stringed instrument for action and sound. I have a RD-800 and it doesn't have the music stand either but I don't mind. I just use a regular three legged music stand when I want to use a sheet music book.

Did you have trouble getting your RD800 to sound good through monitors? I've had mine for 3 years and it still sounds thin and cheap through whatever amp or speaker combo I try. I'm sure I'm missing something among the hundreds of settings. Any suggestions?

@@selftrue670 We use Roland KC350 amps here in the studio, and have had great results. We do not recommend Roland amps smaller than the KC350 (too much background hiss).

1) Does it have PORTAMENTO function? 2) does it have HAMMOND sound? and can we manage it with BARS? 3) how can we put WAH WAH Efect to CLAV sound?

Turn the flappy ruber 180° and you will discover the best idea from Roland for a damper pedal : your foot holds the pedal while pressing on it => no more sliding pedal !! If you don't get it you may read the manual to understand ;-)

Unboxing is always fun. Don't ever ship or receive anything by Greyhound, they are really rough. When I see Roland I always think synthesizers, they go back a long way. Those comparisons are going to be awesome! Cheers, Rik Spector

I use to play a Juno 106 when I was 3 and in a highchair just to play around with the sounds.

Very good Debussy on the Roland! Please make a serie of Debussy claire de lune on several instruments to compare? Would be great. Many fans will enjoy. Thumbs up.

Wow, no music stand? I use it mostly to put song lyrics and chords on there to help me memorize them. I really need that. I love the piano sound of this keyboard but Roland has always been great doing that.

My Casio PX-S3000 has a music desk as standard, but it's not a Stage Piano strictly speaking. Although you could use it that way as it has two line-outs for a house PA system. It does have a stand-alone triple-pedal that doesn't attach to the stand. It doesn't have the flexibility of saving your own registrations by name. I don't expect that it would be something you want to compare it to your Kawai MP11 for your new series. But, you should try playing one just for yourself, as the sound will be similar to the C. Bechstein hybrid that you have already reviewed.

When you switch to one of the organ sounds and play, is the touch sensitivity active, or is it off by default? I’m asking, because in most of the keyboards and synthesizers I have owned with organ presets, the only time when most of them are Touch Sensitive is in the general MIDI section. Same with harpsichord sounds. They are not touch sensitive, except in general MIDI.

Its kinda funny, some of them do and some of them don't. I think the tonewheel style organs didn't have touch sensitivity, but some of the pipe organs did.

What speakers do you recommend for this?

For us actual keyboardists, yes having a music rack attachment would be nice, but we know music rack isn’t the norm with professional keyboards. They make the attachment for their lower priced keyboards. It’s not an oversight, if everybody does it. Except Korg of course, which includes it for Grandstage and SV1.

Kawai makes one of the nicest music racks made by anyone and includes it in the standard price on the MP11se. The absence of a music rack for me is something I would not likely accept.

I had a choice to go to a top college or start a recording studio. It's really sad that schools charge the amount of money that they do. After doing a little research I found I was able to set up a recording studio for a lot less money than to go to a well known music school. I have been studying under high level music teachers since I was five so it seemed like a great choice for me as the school I wanted to go to seemed more interested in my money than me as a student.

Yes with all professional keyboards you will need either a separate amp or speakers.

ThePianoforever I mean, if someone is already a musician and already owns a stand alone music stand and he buys that keyboard to use it on stage and he is not going to use the music stand on the keyboard, perhaps he prefer not to pay for the music stand. Maybe that instrument is thought for professional musicians?

Your outrage at no music stand is ridiculous. This is intended as a professional stage and studio instrument, not a home instrument. Also, the pedal is designed to not slip--I good feature that you should realize is there for a reason. I've had this keyboard for 2 years after previously having an RD 800. It is the best digital piano I have ever played. It beats the daylights out of the Nord Stage 3, Kronos, Yamaha, etc. for overall keyboard action, sounds, midi controller capabilities and build. The only downside is that it is quite heavy.

My apologies ahead of time. I was unimpressed by the Roland, which surprised me as well. On the rendition of Clair de Lune, it has part of a piano sound but, then it had this lightweight sound to it as well that betrayed its electronic origins. Sorry, but the Roland did not live up to it's advanced hype at least to these ears.

Just received a Roland VR 730. Same box issues... Don't quite understand why manufacturers keep adding organ sounds to piano keyboards. There's no way to play a hammond organ with piano keys. Nor viceversa. Let each instrument be itself
