Introduction:
Welcome to another digital piano review by Merriam Pianos! Stu Harrison takes us through the new benchmark for stage pianos, the Roland RD2000 - which happens to be the instrument he personally owns and uses professionally in performance settings. This 88-note instrument serves as a master controller, digital piano, Hammond B3 Organ, and stage piano all in one. It has dual sound processors, every type of port you could hope for, and a solid construction. Let’s dive in, and find out more!
The RD-2000 Action - PHA-50 Goes Portable:
Roland has deployed their newer action design, designated the “PHA-50”, on several of their high-end models, including HP and LX series instruments. However, the FP90 and RD2000 are the only two portable models to be equipped with this upgrade. The action feels and behaves differently than the PHA-4 plastic action, both in terms of sensitivity as well as physical feel.
The action feels slightly shallow compared with the PHA-4, and also gentler...without such a hard bottom to the action it also gives a sense of more weight, although having measured them out, it’s virtually the same.
Classical players and people using this action for solo work will be far more impressed with its precision and its versatility, whether in a studio setting, or live performance.
The Sound:
The RD2000 gives one of the most high fidelity wave signal of any digital product on the market, period. Its near limitless polyphony, and the ability to blend up to 8 internal patches together at once without even batting an eye, makes the RD2000 a dream for keyboardists of all stripes.
The stock piano sounds are totally acceptable, although the expansion piano options give even more character and depth to the acoustic piano function. The E piano category has a massive selection, ranging from contemporary sounds, to very authentic reproductions of vintage sounds as well.
The Organ engine has one of the most authentic Hammond B-3 tone engines of any stage piano on the market. Using the 8 slider bars as tone bars, users can set and save as many personalized presets as they wish.
Beyond the traditional keyboard sounds, a massive selection of synths, leads, pads, strings, brass, and percussion sounds are also preloaded on the instrument.
The RD2000 offers up to 4 simultaneous effects processors to function, as well as real time EQ, Reverb, Amp simulation, and envelope control.
Overall Impressions:
As a prior user of the Yamaha S90 series, the RD700, Motif 8, and Fantom X8, my expectations of the RD2000 were extremely high. Having used the keyboard in close to 500 shows at this point, I can definitively say that I love the machine and many of the well-thought out features it offers. Complaints are few; the weight is definitely back-breaking, and an arpeggiator would be kind of cool to have onboard. But for the majority of use as a live performance beast, this checks all the boxes.

I'll copy here for you what I wrote some days ago in another review of Roland RD-200 on KZread. Hope it helps you, if you haven't bought your new digital piano yet! ALBERTO MACEDO WROTE: Thanks for your good review! I'm a professional pianist, very difficult to be pleased by any digital keyboard. I've always been fan of Yamaha, and have had almost all their stage pianos (CP-4 my last one). My last Roland was the RD-600 which made me promise myself I'd never buy Roland again (sound was good in its time, but key system was weak and chap, breaking in every performance!). All I look for when buying a keyboard is a great and NATURAL piano sound that responds EXACTLY to what I picture in my mind in terms of sound color and intensity. I've owned the RD-2000 for one year. Though in the store I wasn't crazy about the sound I fell in love with the most FABULOUS ACTION ever found in a digital stage piano. I decided to buy it not just for this, but because after a thorough exploration of the manual in the store, I realized it was posible to PERSONALIZE every single V-Piano Technology sound (the best ones in the instrument), not just in terms of EQ, effects, hammer noise, string resonance, damper noise, cabinet resonance, lid, etc., but specially in terms of individual VOICING of each of the 88 keys! You can change in every key, separately, the timbre OR CHARACTER of the sound, from dark and mellow to bright and crispy, the individual VOLUME and even the individual TUNNING of each note you play. This is just fantastic and never before found in any other keyboard. I've spent hundreds of hours doing this during the last year in just my 6 favorite acoustic pianos. The results are just AMAZING!! IT FEELS AND SOUNDS just like a REAL GRAND PIANO (actually like 6 different real grand pianos!), exactly designed to my personal taste, but ONLY AFTER ALL THIS WORK. I'm really happy now with this instrument. I can make MUSIC with it and be able to communicate my feelings and emotions almost as exactly as I do with a real quality grand. Obviously you can save all these personalized sounds in an external USB. My only question/complain is... Why Roland musicians and designers didn't do this in the Factory and released an instrument with gorgeous factory sounds??? I'm sure a lot of sales are lost because of this. A real shame! Most employees at music stores don't even now how configurable the RD-2000 sounds are! And most musicians don't have the patience or time to do it.

I own an RD-2000, which I got fairly early in 2017. For the most part, I totally agree with your assessment. But I do have some issues with it. First the good (most of which you mentioned): 1. It makes a great MIDI controller, and the mixing sliders are super convenient. Panel layout is excellent and build quality is great. 2. The PHA-50 keybed is one of the best, and better even than the Montage or Kronos 3. The V-Pianos are very good. Also, there are many Supernatural acoustic pianos, so if you don't like the V-Pianos, there are still many excellent choices. 4. There are many other sounds, most of which are fairly decent and usable, if not the absolute best 5. It's not too heavy and quite portable, although a little long for some cars 6. OS updates have added some more V-Piano presets and improved some early issues. 7. There's an excellent 3-pedal unit available as an option. Now the bad: 1. At least in my early version, the panel text is not white but is a medium grey color that's almost invisible, especially on a dark stage. This is totally stupid, especially since so much effort went into making the faders and dials lit and easily visible in the dark. 2. The display is Ok, but the viewing angle is very narrow. In a multi-keyboard stand, it's often difficult to read, since you can't view it from directly above. 3. The leslie for the organs is terrible--way too fast and unrealistic. Not a huge deal and it can be adjusted, but still annoying. Unfortunately, for me, disadvantages #1 and #2 are killers and really destroy the utility of the instrument as a master keyboard on stage. If you're thinking about buying one, carefully check out those two points. If I was buying it now, I'd probably spend the extra $1500 and get a Fantom 8, which has the same sliders, V-Piano engine, and keybed, but a much better display, white panel text and updated Zenology sounds (as well as many other capabilities). For studio use, I might also consider a Kawai MP11SE, which has an even better action. It's too big and heavy to use as a touring stage instrument, though. A great instrument in many ways, but buy with caution.

Yes, Roland and their displays. I love Roland and their super dependable equipment, and great sound quality. My first synth bought new in the 1980s was a Roland Juno. But I was at the music store testing the FP90x V-Piano and it had the smallest display yet in Roland's History. I told the store clerk, good news and bad news, NO WAY am I buying this keyboard, but I will by the RD2000. (The Fantom8 is too expensive, plus I own a FantomO6). I agree though, the displays from Roland just seem ancient.

Hey Stu, it's been a while, my friend. I just purchased a RD-2000 today for the purpose of gigging. Your review was very informative and insightful. Hearing your experience with the keyboard gave me a positive feeling towards my purchase decision and how I'll be able to utilize it in gigs in the future. I use my Kawai VPC1 (with Abbey Road) and my acoustic upright for daily piano playing. I spent a couple hours familiarizing myself with the RD-2000 so far and see it's potential. You are right on the $ regarding the action of the keybed (which is of utmost importance to me!). On an aside, I stopped by Merriam Music a few months ago. I missed you but will try you again. Hope you and the family are well. Norman Harrison

You're very welcome! The RD2000 has a more advanced PHA50 action versus the RD800'S PHA4 action. In addition to a longer pivot length, the RD2000 also has wood side-panelling, which, for some, gives a greater feel of authenticity too. While there are some common threads in terms of the sonic profile of the two instruments, I would personally say that the RD2000 has a more refined piano sound as well.

I am not sure why this "action" of perfection is so necessary? I've been playing the Yamaha P95 at home for practice for over 10 years, it is good and heavy and keeps me strong. But on stage for acoustic solo piano play, I have to endure the very worse to the very best, over the decades I have become very good at adapting to all the actions of 100s of pianos. As a pianist you will have to make the same adjustments, unless you are gigging and bring your own.

Just my $0.02, but they're very similar pianos really. Just with different feature emphasis. If you're primary interest is as a piano, the FP-90X would give you the awesome action, with built-in amplifier and speakers and a smattering of frills like splits and layers and a built-in music stand and such. The RD-2000 is a stage piano with the same great action but trades off the internal amplifier and speakers for significantly more features like the zones and sliders, arbitrary layers and splits and all that. Bunch more sounds on the RD-2000 as well, but you need headphones or external amplification, it has no music stand built-in and it's a bunch more money as well. You'd have to value the additional sounds and frills on the RD-2000, or have professional needs, to make it worth buying over the FP-90X I'd imagine.

I am extremely critical of sound, I am choosing the RD2000 for two reasons over the FP90x. Both have the V-Piano, but only the RD2000 will allow me to add the new "German Grand" expansion option. No expansion available on the FP90x. Second reason the large display for all the editing I plan to do on the piano to achieve the greatest piano I have ever owned in the last 40 years of playing digitals. Plus, the on-panel physical control is great for instant sound changing on a more elementary level.

For me, the RD2000 has a superior action and a far more advanced feature offering. There is an argument to be had for user-friendliness however. The S90XS is a more streamlined model that may be easier to navigate for some users that are less experienced with high-end stage and workstation pianos. Thanks and hope this helps!

The piano sounds on the Rolland aren’t the best and many have noticed that but it makes up for that with other things like action, the variety, the capability it has. It’s overkill for your average piano player but it’s fun.

Best question ever. This is why digital pianos need massive control over the sound with extensive editing. Every speaker or headphone you choose will have your Dpiano sounding different, then we all have our own idea of what it should sound like. For home speakers choose near field, the best sounding at the cheapest cost is the JBL305pMKII at $300 a pair. Headphones best for Dpianos is the Sony MDR7506. Now you need a piano like the RD2000 that has that extensive editing capability. (I have been playing piano for 54 years, digitals for 32 years).

I'm undecided between the RD-2000 and the Kawai MP11SE. I currently have a RD-700 which I like but I never could get a 100% satisfactory piano sound out of it. That keyboard is starting to go out on me now so I'm in the market for an upgrade.

Hey Jonathan, sorry for the delay in responding to this. Hope this isn't too late to help! So many differences between these, but both are designed to deliver a great experience...and I feel like I can contribute an extremely valid opinion here, since I moved from an RD-700 GX to an RD-2000, and I also play MP-11's all the time. Firstly, if weight is a concern, the MP11 is a tank which isn't realistically portable without two people. So if it's a gigger, don't do the MP11 unless you've got a crew, or you are REALLY committed to getting that beautiful action to a stage. Also, for my live playing applications I needed a much broader selection of onboard patches, and the RD-2000's scene function, the draw-bar organ function, and effects engines were just a better match. If I was ONLY ever using piano or rhodes, and transportation weren't an issue, I'd be on an MP-11se. But as a well-rounded stage piano, the RD-2000 just had too many goodies for me to turn down.

@@MerriamPianos Stu, sorry to barge in here. You might have seen my other posts but I started looking at comparisons of the RD line up through the years which took me to the 2000 and your video here and your comment about having the 700GX. Straight up, I'm an idiot and bought a GX while working overseas. Not an idiot on the purchase, just never took time to learn to play. Shipped the keyboard back to the US in 2012 and I returned back to US in 2020. Set up the GX but now I'm looking at going back overseas which is why I made comments on the 30/30X and 60X. If it looks like I'll be overseas for years again something lighter like the 30X and online piano teachers/apps, I want to get after learning. Bla bla bla. SO my question is...is the 700GX still a viable DP with 128 poly and PHA II keys? It's in like new condition and I upgraded with the GX-1 module so it still sounds great. Learn on the 30X so I can play the 700GX but will I ultimately like the 30X more? Who knows. Sorry to bug ya on all of this. Oh hey, just reading about adding a 700NX or 300GX to iOS via Sound Canvas and either the Apple camera kit or a lightning cable. I need to review this option more. My iPad is a 2017 12.9" pro. USB 2.0 vs 3.0(camera kit). Dealt with this before? Discontinued for iOS, Roland Cloud subscription and use MacOS. Not even sure why I would use it. Was thinking it would be an easier method of getting access to 700GX features I guess.

It is a heavier action, so there is some mechanical key noise, but I personally don't find it to be very substantial by any means. I would recommend testing it out in person to see if you find the key action to be too loud for your preferences as it is a subjective matter of course. :)

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Sonically, they are very different animals, so the preference in that department will come down to the subjectivity of the player. In terms of touch, Roland's PHA-50 action is very tough to compete with in my opinion, but, yet again, this is also a highly-subjective debate. The best bet would be to spend some time on each at a showroom to get a sense of what your preferences are. :)

Absolutely! In my opinion, the action is the most important component of a digital piano. You can always access different samples and sound libraries via MIDI or get more speaker power/fidelity from external amps, but the action is the invariable element of the equation. :)

I’ve been a Roland fan for the majority of my years of playing. I have branched out and have some Yamaha gear as well as a Nord Stage 3. Years back, Roland wasn’t necessarily trying to sample an acoustic grand. It was a digital expression of a grand piano, like the sounds of the D70 which carried over into other boards like the FP SA board. The electric grands were good too but when other keyboards started giving a more acoustic grand sound, Yamaha seemed to take the lead with the Power Grand and the S90 Grand. I was never a fan of Korg (to each his own). Roland seemed to up their game with the Dynamic Grand featured in the SRX series of expansion boards. It was a mean grand but the heavy attack would cut through my mix but still kind of thin. My Nord is the best in my book but those fun sounds where you know it’s not an acoustic grand, Roland seems to take the win there. They’re not really making better sounds as much as reinventing the signature Roland sounds that have been around. This is all my opinion. Please don’t hate me for it or think I’m hating on gear. I honestly thought I’d NEVER own anything t with Yamaha on the back of it but oops I ate my words. I thought that little red keyboard was a joke until I went in my local music store with headphones and tried it out.

Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts and opinions! As you've pointed out, gear choices are a very personal and subjective thing. Every player will resonate with a different sound or touch. The exciting thing is that there are so many amazing models and manufacturers on the market to choose from. That ensures that it's possible for almost every player to find something that they connect with. Also, I think you raise a great point when talking about eating your words about a certain manufacturer. We establish these preconceived notions about a company or specific model based on third-hand accounts in most cases. The only way to truly know your thoughts or feelings about something is to experience it first-hand. Thanks again and happy playing! :)

I agree, the only modeled piano out there, it is alone in a sea of 1000s of digitals piano copies. Musicians seem to forget that a piano that doesn't have extreme editing of the sound is totally useless. It is like buying an acoustic piano that was never tuned and voiced by an expert technician.

I'm sure this is a great instrument. Unfortunately I most likely will never buy one unless I stumbled on to a fantastic deal or steal on the used market which is doubtful. Therefore I'm interested in how close the RD-88 will come to it in terms of action and sound quality. I'm really into light weight. I have a Yamaha KX-88 which was always quite a beast to move around, but I'm a lot older now then when I was hauling that around. I think Roland has made a lot of great sounding instruments over the years. My KX-88 drove mostly Roland synths. They have a tremendous amount of experience with electronic instruments. Of course they don't make acoustic grands like Yamaha and Kawai, but I don't think that's particularly important when it comes to great electronics.

Yes, don't judge the piano sound, most videos providers get this wrong all the time. The RD2000 is capable of direct USB audio to a computer, the cleanest way to keep Roland's hard work of stellar sound quality intact. Every time we have to convert digital to analog and back again weakens the sound. (Depends on the quality of the DAC and ADC).

I have heard this many times. The V-Piano has the most extensive and deepest control over the tone of the entire piano. Every one of the 88 keys can be tuned, voiced and leveled to your liking, in addition to the overall equalization and control of the articulation and velocity and characteristics of a piano. There may be another piano that sounds better on your listening equipment, but that would only be a coincidence of finding the right speaker/amp or headphone that works with it. We need pianos like the RD2000 with deep editing to make our piano sound to our taste.

I am very sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the Roland RD2000. It is a powerhouse in terms of its feature offering and the PHA50 action is quite exceptional. With that said, you may favour a more traditional sampling-based engine like those featured in Kawai pianos as you may feel that have more authenticity. Alternatively, you could also use the RD2000 as a MIDI controller and rely on VST plugins to access piano sounds that are more favourable to your ears. :)

Any video that only plays the piano is useless. We need an explanation of how the sound can be edited, and key action opinions to complete the review. Post mastering of a direct injected digital piano can make any piano sound good. You must listen in person with headphones you are familiar with to know what it truly sounds like. (not to mention how the action interacts with the sound engine).
