Rudi, I must have watched this video 20 times! I am so excited to finally have a piano-feeling keyboard in my home with some lovely sounding patches. I won't be buying from your store because it's a long way from Switzerland to Oz! ...but let it be known that out of anything I could find out there - including Roland's site - it is you, my friend, who sold the RD-2000 to me.

thanks , great vid, loved your playing. Im an RD fan , glad they have gone back to their strengths after the RD800 which was not good. I use a RD700NX for my main stage piano but will certainly give this a try .

97% of the 2000’s tones are from the 800. The tone list is merely extended to include the new vpiano and RD-1000 SN sounds.

Thank you for your detailed review. You're a great piano player also. I've got a question for you. I bought the RD-2000 last month. I'm very pleased by the keyboard and the master keyboard features. Anyway, since I've also a Yamaha PSR-S950, I feel that the concert piano grand made by Yamaha, in a live context with other musicians, comes out better from the mixer in comparison with the Roland. Did you experiment some settings just to give more evidence to the piano sound for live band situations?

Hello, Rudi! Nice review! I was surprised at 01:56 minute to hear the cut of the sound when you switched to another sound/tone. What is it? - the specific feature (in case of live performance it is real "bug"/ trouble for performer) of Super Natural Sound or V-Piano engine? Or it is inadequacy of both engines? Or I just was mistaken?;) FYI: on LX/ HP series and FP-90 it is existed. Thanks!

Hi. Just to let you know, from the manual. V-Piano: This sound generator does not support Modulation FX, Tremolo/Amp Sim, or Tone/Program Remain.

i tried this at the store and the action was amazing. The piano and EP sounds not convince me yet. They don't sound natural. Strings are amazing. For the price range tI think they are a strong option for pianists looking for high quality key beds.

A built-in audio interface is not "a first". The (lower classed) Yamaha MX series has had that for quite some time. Also, the audio of a software synth isn't routed into the RD-2000, it is actually rendered by it (instead of it being rendered by your computers audio interface). Cool thing though...

Roland it's always amazing about acoustic Piano, very very close to the real one.

Great piano playing ... I got the RD 800 for week in my studio and sent it back because the acoustic piano still sounded very plastic ( lots of features to edit but couldn't do much for the plastic sound). I end up getting the Yamaha CP4 just because piano sound is my main priority . I wonder if the RD 2000 took care of that issue , can't tell much from this recording , but i will bought this in a heartbeat if the RD 2000 would finally get the acs piano right

i owned Rolands in the last 20 years , and i love everything about them ( with the exception of the acs pianos). Maybe its because i play the real thing all the time , that i cant help to hear some plastic twingy feature in the attack of the piano sound. The Yamaha's have a more realist attack even with a much older technology . When i spend more than 2k in a keyboard i want to make sure that at least i'm getting a decent piano sound.

Yes I hear the sampling is off with this piano … I was going to purchase it, but I’m going to opt for the FP 90x … would love to hear people’s thoughts

with the electric piano's (Rhodes) again Roland just eq'd one basic sample to create the different patches. But Yamaha and Korg do the same. I prefer to use samples. The first acoustic piano sounds good.

Surprised Rudi didn't mention that the Classic RD-1000 sounds are incorporated into this new RD-2000 as well. I own an RD-1000 which still functions fine after 30 years. Obviously though, it doesn't have the range of sounds available in this new instrument.

If I may ask, We got our RD-2000 and told that their KC 400 is ideal for sound, Well that was malarkey as the sound is terrible, Now (after we bought one) Roland says the KC is mono and won't give good sound,we play but novice in the studio sound area. Can you say what's generating your music? Thanks much

Stanley Bednara . I have a Roland DS61 and it didn't sound good through keyboard amps. I tried Behringer, Roland and Korg and Samson Resolve studio monitors. I bought an Electro Voice ZLX 12 powered speaker. To me it sounds great but not as convenient as a keyboard amp. My Roland groovebox sounded good through a JBL studio monitor or Yamaha pa system. I guess its subjective. I wish you luck finding the right system for you.

Did you customize the piano sound on your own or was it inbuilt?

Left field question for you - can you plug it into the USB ports of an MX1? Sometimes I like piano music, sometimes EDM. Would like a controller that integrates with my existing setup. Thanks.

Hi Rob, The USB on the RD2000 allows 2 way communication of both Midi and audio to your DAW. You can connect directly to the MX1 with audio outputs but not USB as the RD 2000 does not conform to the AIRA standard. Hope this helps. R

How does this compare to the Roland RD 800, is it worth upgrading to this?

Would you say the rd2000 is worth $700 more than the FP-90? I really like both and if the rd2000 is really THAT much better I want to spend the money

Can theses sliders transmit all CC messages?

“They haven’t missed a thing”, what about vibrato/chorus on the tonewheel modeling? All the Shift+ functions on this model is a faff in my opinion, and the screen is way too small for the job, a parts bin item from Roland’s drum modules.

Modeling as well. All of their SN sounds are a combination of the two, samples and modeling.

It looks fancy... but the piano sound is not as good as Yamaha CP4 or Kawai MP11 which are my 2 digital pianos of reference

Looking forward to getting mine finally🎉 -it doesn’t have a 16-track sequencer, as it not a workstation keyboard but a stage piano... however, it comes with loads of sounds and customizable features👌🏾!

I played the RD2000 side by side vs the Nord stage 3. The Nord acoustic piano samples are better to my ear but I think I prefer the action on the Roland. Also for anyone using their stage piano to control a computer based system the Roland is hands down better. Not to mention the Roland is close to half the price. I'm not sure how much of the difference in the sound of the samples would even translate through a PA with a band in a live setting. $2K is a big price difference. For that reason alone I'm not even sure the comparison between the RD and the Nord stage is apples to apples.

i don't know a thing about pianos, but does the sound come out of the piano?

There no built in speaker if that’s what you’re asking. All the sounds are internal but speakers or headphones must be attached to hear them.

Not the typical Roland piano sound...

what speakers to buy to enjoy the sound if you use this at home?

A pair of studio monitors, and a matched subwoofer. Perhaps a pair of Genelec 8020Cs would be enough.

There is many portable pianos with speakers so no reason why this shouldn't have them. However i've heard somewhere that because these are stage pianos meaning they are principally used on stage because there is already a pro sound system installed there's no need to have speakers. For me that's nonsense cuz again if you like to play at home you don't always want to look for a speaker system to hook them up to.

Mostly, but not entirely. It's based on the same engine but with a couple of features less (a couple of parameters less, no Silver piano etc). Cool surname by the way! 😍

It depends. Are you taking it gigging with you? The action in the Kawai is really good, but it weighs 30kg, the RD2000 only weighs around 20KG. So, if you're playing gigs, it would be a bit more of an effort to take it out. Either way, they are both awesome machines. Cheers, Murdoch

Nord pianos aren't pianos! They are dodgy feeling, expensive sounding, limited memory cheap feel keyboards. I don't know how they get away with calling them pianos! Sure they have a very distinctive sound that is all their own. But every piano sound on a Nord has that Nord feel. Unlike the Roland imho

I think Roland have done with their so called innovation. I mean, one should just buy integra7 or jupiter 80 (which is integra7 + arpeggios) and may not visit roland site at least in this lifetime! Well, that box is enough to keep busy for a professional musician as far as roland history of synths go. Acoustic sounds are subjective and i would prefer yamaha for those. i have Nord lead A1 btw and its awesome.

Excellent keyboard....but still not very moved by the sounds of Rolands digital piano. The electric pianos are excellent though. If I wanted to by this, it wouldn't be for the acoustic piano sounds.

The NORD Piano 3 crushes this is action and sound quality. The Roland piano sounds are quite cheesy; cocktail party mixed with a little soap opera. It's why you see every demo of the unit is littered with arpeggios runs. When you see NORD Piano 3 demos the person is playing Liszt or Rachmaninov on on the Steinway or Bosendorfer. On the RD 700 they are playing Babe by Styx. It's who they appeal to.

Have you researched the way the Grey Lady was sampled by Nord? The latest NORD concert grands are award winning. But that's why the NORD Piano 3 is $3000 and the Rolands are $2400. You indeed get what you pay for. The Roland has it's place, but the quality of the NP3 and sample library is off the charts.

I can't escape the feeling this board is going more computer, less musical piano..... digital perfection, all the variation you could reasonably want, well thought out, but without a soul. There's an annoying plastic cleanliness to this 'piano'. I enjoyed playing an RD700GX the other day MUCH more. If it's Rhodes EP you're after, the RD2000 is night and day better than any of the older RD's. Thank you Roland for sticking with an action with escapement, what's wrong with Yamaha and others? Escapement is a must for any serious pianist. (Please don't call us "Keyboard Players!")

When I buy RD-2000, am I going to have wear a Fitbit too? Not the greatest advertisement for neither of the two...

I can't stand the Roland DP's. The sound decays too quickly and is unrealistic and plunky. I had an RD700NX for a while but had to sell it as it messed up my playing technique and sounded awful recorded. But to each their own.

Well, I've got my piano music playing on Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio and many other places. I'm also a piano tuner-techinican by trade. I own several of the top digital pianos and workstations as well as a very nice acoustic upright piano. I think I have a right to my opinion. For me personally, it's Yamaha GH action as far as acton to sound connection goes but Nord has the edge on sound. The Yamaha CP4 has the best acton IMO. And if piano is your main thing and you want to go sub $1500 new, it would be the P225. I also use a Kronos 2 88 as a one size fits all sort of situation when needed. I'm not knocking Roland keyboards as a whole, it's just for piano-technique playing, it didn't work for me. I haven't tried the RD-2000 though, and probably won't anytime soon.

Gotta say that after using the new Roland RD2000 at my gig last weekend and for it being their top flagship model, I'm sorry (but for me personally) it was utterly Rubbish, i won't ever buy Roland keyboards again, same old sounds, nothing stood out at all... they are well built those that, just really really weak sounding patches, no guts or bite onstage... come on Roland! they are so far behind the other manufacturers (sound creation wise) hopefully they'll improve and fast🙄 not everyone wants to use VST's and Mainstage... they were my favourite brand at one point and at one stage they were ahead of their time, a benchmark in everything "80's" - classic patches etc... I'm still using my Roland Fantom X8 onstage which is fine... it's never let me down, but shocking for their new stuff, so dissapointed..... however.... I can't fault their customer service and when I get stuck, I always get help fast👍🏻

Super nice guy demo'ing. Thanks heaps. Regarding the keyboard, gosh there's certainly nothing piano realistic there still. The over processed sound is still terribly overt decades later. V-Piano was an overpriced dinosaur in 2009 terribly unrealistic so I'm not sure why they're still pushing that engine. Compared to other offerings [the demos I've seen at least] so far are truly underwhelming. I do very much appreciate the review but there's nothing there to make me want to purchase one. Sorry if you're a fan!! :)

This guy is a good player, but I want to cringe when he pecks at the upper range notes with his index or middle finger. This piano is also very underwhelming sounding.

Tired old chops big boy. Sales liar aside, having played this with sony headphones I am not impressed with the piano. Gutted
