Well, if I am not mistaken, at least some of them got up when they heard how many times he was nominated and that this is his first win... he really is cool in his own - kind of - humble way and even if (personally I think that) Blade Runner 2019 is not such a good movie, the cinematography is really really good, especially (and I have no reason to question that) since Mr Deakins said that more or less what we see in the final film was what was initially captured on camera, which in this time and age of digital cinema, its an achievement on its own, even more for a sci-fi movie... Happy for him. Really hope he will be on "Dune"...

BELTENEBROSGR A similar thing happened with Randy Newman. The audience got up as soon as the announcer mentioned that it was his first win after many losses (Randy’s first win (which came for the MONSTERS INC. song “If I didn’t have you”) came on his 16th nomination). The announcer that year was Glenn Close, by the way.

A similar thing happened for Sound Mixing the year before. HACKSAW RIDGE won that category and one of the Sound Mixing winners (Kevin O'Connell) finally won his first EVER Oscar after 21 nominations. I believe Kevin O'Connell is the 2nd place record holder for most losses before first win (only Victor Young surpasses him, winning his only Oscar on his 22nd try, although Young's win was posthumous as he won just a few months after his death). James Ivory (of Merchant-Ivory fame) also won his first ever Oscar the same night Roger Deakins won. Ivory won Best Adapted Screenplay for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, becoming the oldest ever winner in any category at age 89.

The thing about people working behind the camera, is that they’re not used to being in the spotlight. So their speeches are usually very different from the actor’s one to whom speaking in front of crowds is absolutely normal. He probably just wanted to get off that stage as quickly as possible 😂😂 but bless him, I found his speech adorable. He’s amazing, been his fan for ages and I’m so glad he finally got what he deserved.
