Rodney Dangerfield’s Final Appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (1992)

Комедия

Rodney Dangerfield makes one last visit to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson to wish his old friend a farewell on his last year hosting the show.
00:59 “I know I’m ugly. I asked the bartender to make me a zombie. He told me God beat him to it.”
05:11 “When you get older, they say the first thing that goes is the mind. I say they missed by three feet.”
08:11 “You know what they say? It’s lonely at the top… when there’s no one on the bottom.”

There's a video on KZread of Rodney Dangerfield on David Letterman's show but David Letterman kept interrupting the flow of jokes. Rodney D pauses before the punchline and Johnny Carson knows to keep quiet during that pause. David Letterman didn't know and tried to come in with his own wit - it's called 'treading on the jokes' and it ruins the surprise of a funny line. Johnny Carson seems to be doing nothing as an interviewer but in fact he is trusting the comic to fill the silence with something worth waiting for. That's a skill which many TV presenters are too anxious and too self-promoting to nurture.

I miss Rodney and love to watch the old clips, reminds me of the good old days watching Carson as a teenager with my parents (when I was lucky enough to stay up a little later). Nowadays there isn't a show made that parents and kids watch together - they will never have the chance to reminisce like I do with old tv shows, they spend so little time together compared to the generations before.

But as I passed them and make the testosterone mandated look over the shoulder, I glanced real quick at the man, and it was Rodney Dangerfield.... Suddenly I was more star struck with Rodney than the blond.... That's how great he was.... He just nodded and said, "How ya doing?"
