Rode NT-SF1 | HOW I USE WHAT I USE | Robert Dudzic

In this video you can see me working with AMBISONICS audio, from recording the sounds in New York City to what happens to the sounds after. This also shows the way I use the plus closer look on my setup creative process and an overview of what gear I was using to get these sounds.

    Absolutely awesome to hear this microphone in action. I think that this microphone opens up much possibility with electroacoustic music, along with VR and film. I know that this will be a great purchase down the road. 🙂

    Thank you for this Robert, have you ever tested any of the second-order ambisonic like the Octomic? I'm wondering if beyond the spec-sheet advantage, there is any significant difference in data capture or headroom during processing. I ask this, because I can't imagine any production needing higher level sound quality than what's demonstrated in this video. edit: I guess if something like Dolby Surround in IMAX might benefit due to the amount of output speakers and sheer space.

The way I see it and maybe I'm missing something you need a fith capsel to truely have the 5. also really 6 cause you need 1 that only hears bass for LFE. Apparently not though.

    I use the Tascam 701d and the RØDE NT-SF1 as well. I find that A-Format setting on the Tascam doesn't seem to give me the levels I expect across all four channels. So, I use B-Format AmbiX. My fear is that this B decoder was tuned for the Sennheiser Amber VR head and may not accurately decode the NT-SF1. Any thoughts?

    Hello Robert, first of all, thank you for this series, it is exceptional and inspiring seeing how you work. I wanted to ask you something about the way you record and handle the multi-channels. Say that you record a session using one shotgun and two side mics mounted on a pistol grip. That will result in three channels of audio featuring the same sound. How will you use those three channels when designing your "final" stereo sound? Are you layering mutiple channels of the same source sound and simply process and then render them in a stereo file? Thank you!

    I bought this microphone recently and hooked it up to a mix-pre 6 ii, I'm getting sound from it but its very low despite increasing the gain. QUESTION 1: Sound Devices has an Ambisonic plug-in which I'm thinking is must at point, am I correct? QUESTION 2: Does the Zoom F8N Pro require an Ambisonic plug-in? QUESTION 3: In your opinion, would these two field recorders yield a similar sound with this particular microphone? This might seem a bit loaded, but any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

  • @Paul_Rohde

    @Paul_Rohde

    3 жыл бұрын

    THe poster didn't respond to you yet, so I'll take the liberty to do so. For the Zoom F6, there is an Ambisonics (A or B) setting, so four inputs are controlled by a single gain. (The same occurs on the F6 for when inputs are marked as stereo pairs.) Re binaural question, you would have to check if the Rode plugin has that output.

    @@RobertDudzic Thanks - only interested because I was thinking of getting the NT-SF1 as I have the Sennheiser. Although I did a lot of field recordings for the BBC, I am mainly interested in using it to record my own musical ensembles, and obviously it’s handy to be able to change directivity after the event, especially if you can’t monitor because you are performing. Do you ever have problems with moisture? Because the Ambeo is an electret design, which I think have fewer problems with condensation. If I could justify buying both to test them, I would! They are all a bit difficult to compare with normal mics as the capsule noise is dependent on the pattern (ie, how they are combined in post). But I’m a big fan of ambisonics! Great video.
