Rocky Marciano boxing style analysis - simple, brutal...beautiful from the Brockton Blockbuster

Спорт

Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - Rocky Marciano, the Brockton Blockbuster, retired as undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. 43 of his 49 opponents failed to hear the final bell. In this video we are going to run through a boxing style analysis of Rocky Marciano, a style that was elegantly simple and brutally effective.
There are 4 areas that I cover in Marciano's style analysis:
1. Footwork - Marciano was flat-footed and his stance was narrow, everything I can't teach to an amateur boxer. On the other hand he inched forward and kept the opponent under constant pressure, not a second to relax.
2. Defense - Marciano's waist-bend defence took him off the centre line and made it really difficult for opponents to catch him clean (it also provided a great platform for Rocky to launch counter attacks)
3. Attack sequences - Rocky had 2 primary attack sequences; the jab and hook and the 'Suzy Q' right hook. His uppercut was fantastic and he didn't mind using the head, rabbit punches and forearms. Not for the faint-hearted!
4. Conditioning and will - Rocky Marciano had as good conditioning as anyone in boxing. He was remorseless, non-stop. He was like a metronome. As soon as he sensed tiredness he would up his pace...from that point forward there was only one ending.

I agree . His defence was very good as even Angelo dundee Muhammed Alis trainer commented that his defence was better than it appeared. And most people are unaware that he started boxing late so you can amagine if he had started early how much more impressive he would have been .

Combined Walcott Charles Moore Louis already had 431 fights before they fought Rocky. Add the 96 fights Louis had during his 4 year military service, that's 527 fights not to mention Walcott and Louis retired for 6½ years. Those four were already ring worn and washed. Anyone that says otherwise is biased.

Fran - Great analysis as we’ve come to expect. A sportswriter once asked one of Marciano’s sparring partners what it’s like to be hit by Rocky. He replied “It’s like someone is hitting you with a sack of oranges”. So many of Marciano’s opponents seemed technically superior to him on paper, but he beat them all. He had the guts of a lion, fists of steel, and incredible conditioning. Very much underrated on his defense. I’m old enough to clearly remember the sad day of his passing.

I loved his double left hook, constant feints with his movement that desensitized his opponents defense over time. The massive leverage he was able to get into his punches from telephone booth range. His attacks were efficient like you said straightforward and non stop which can make up for lack of pure speed, by the time he let's off 10 haymakers his opponent would usually be throwing 5 or less punches with less effectiveness. His conditioning was top tier physically and mentally. A true body snatcher that even narrated "Go to the body you're losing your head" over his fight with Ezzard Charles which he eventually knocked out by missing the left hook but being pendulum like used that momentum to crank a devestating right hand over the top almost like a pitcher in baseball. His uppercuts often sent opponents clean through the ropes just look at the Joe Louis fight (color version) and his fight with Lastarza. Marciano was sheering people's teeth clean off their gums with over hand rights and bursting blood vessels in their arms by the end of the fight. He shows nice rolling techniques particularly later in his career that generated immediately into hooks rocking his opponents leaving them off leveraged(Don Cockell fight) He had that subtle awkward angle that he would induce on his opponents and even shows some back stepping into an attack if you watch the first Walcott fight. Nothing too flashy just pure heart determination and power

The "inching forward" movement was created by Charlie Goldman. He tied RM's feet together, a little apart, in order to coach that inching movement and balance. He is a favourite of mine, he gave so much of himself to the sport, was so gracious. He was asked as fighters are so often for a prediction, "Say Rocky, what round will you knock him out?" and Marciano answered, "I hope to win." My KZread name comes from that quote.

Walcott Charles Moore Savold LOST (113) times and were KO'd (32) times. Lowry had (57) LOSSES. Wanna continue? I've studied EVERYONE of Marciano's opponents individually and with the exception of ONE opponent, they were all terrible. Charles was good BUT HE WAS STILL A NATURAL MIDDLEWEIGHT. Just saw a picture of Charles standing next to middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson and Robinson looked Bigger!!! Don't get me wrong, there were some great light heavyweights during this time. But the HEAVYWEIGHT division was a complete and utter embarrassment. Rocky fans always say his opponents were bigger than he was. Then name all these Bigger opponents and let's go over their records and KO percentages one at a time. Nobody can out-debate me. NOBODY. Wanna try? Then go for it. I'll be waiting... I am a big fan of Marciano, I think his major strength was in athleticism and absolute dedication to the sport. He was able to throw power punches no stop for the entire match. I've never seen any other heavy weight doing that. I also think that the Suzie Q was more of a mix between a hook and an uppercut with the same rotation of the torso that baseball players do (He used to be a baseball player) there was his entire weight behind that punch.

This man never gassed out with more power punches thrown than anyone has ever thrown since while being rarely hit clearly no matter the name. Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. No way Rocky would beat a prime Iron Mike.

Good analysis. Marciano had a way of steering his opponents, and positioning himself away from danger, often in on his opponents chest. Brilliant defense in that he would put his head away from danger, while setting his opponent up for his steady non stop pummeling. Extremely effective winning style he employed. Highly highly underappreciated.

Fran - Great video! Marciano was also a masterful inside fighter. I would love to see you do a video on that aspect of Rocky's fighting style. How he would position his hands in his opponent's inside elbows and then go to work on his body, etc.

That was an excellent insight into Marciano's constant pressure brawling style. He also had shorter arms (like Tyson, Frazer, etc.); so his style of constant forward pressure, closing the ring, and throwing powerful snappy inside punches fit that attribute very well IMHO.

Wonderful analysis of the great Rocky Marciano. Although I think most of the headbutts are accidental. Yes he does have a tendency to lead with his head but his goal is actually to get his head to his opponent's chest so that he can off balance them and start ripping to the body and head, he does this after making them miss with their shot and he immediately puts his head to their chest. I feel that his best range is in clinching range where he would really just start hammering his opponents with uppercuts and hooks. Combined with his ability to wrestle made him one of the greatest in-fighters in boxing.

Great breakdown of Marciano’s style, I’ve been into heavyweight boxing for many years I studied the styles of the greats, sadly we had no local boxing gyms in my small uk market town but I trained and spared with many of my friends and relatives, they did not enjoy because I always had the natural ability to land very solid punches which had devastating effect, I’m now 51 6ft1 and just under 16st still very in shape, still wish we had some local boxing gyms but sadly there is none, if I’d had a coach with your ocd type of enthusiasm who knows where I could have been now, Detail is key to success 👍

If you watch the final moments of the knockout versus walcott in the later rounds you will see Marciano inching forward and the funny thing is the steps where he is getting close to Walcott he actually steps forward with his back foot first. Which is of course totally "wrong" about Walcott is so defensive that Marciano is basically safe and in addition to that stepping with that back foot first conceals the foward movement. Not something you'd want to try to teach someone because even if it works in that case it's hard to judge when is the right case but damn it if it it worked for the Rock.

Marciano would throw and rotate his whole body with his overhand right, landing in the southpaw stance. If he missed, he could immediately follow up with a rear left hook, again throwing his whole body into it and rotating to land back into the orthodox stance.

Unbeaten is the story of an immigrant son who chased the American dream in the middle of the 20th Century. Marciano’s story unfolds in the back alleys of New England and the musty gyms of New York in the years after World War 2. Rocky moved through a romantic era of guys and dolls, hustlers and gamblers, crusty trainers and sleazy managers, glamorous celebrities and notorious mobsters. What I knew about Marciano before I read the book Unbeaten was that he cowardly retired during his prime right before he would have had to fight the lik' of Patterson, Liston, and Clay to name just a few. I did not know about his conduct during World War 2 that got him locked up in jail for 2 years. I did not know of the mob's influence in his career. Nor did i realize that his list of opponents while he was champion were of dubious quality. Joe Louis was far beyond his prime. Journeyman Joe Walcott was 38/39 years old. Former middleweight turned light heavyweight grandfather Archie Moore was 41 and Ezzard Charles best years were behind him at light heavyweight. For the last decade of his life Marciano wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters and loansharking. He hung around with Frank Sinatra and a number of "made guys." Rocky was not a good businessperson and was lousy with investing and saving money. He left his family penniless. Again his boxing record is offset by the low level of his opponents. He died relatively young in a plane crash due to his complete disregard of intentionally flying during horrible weather conditions inorder to collect money.

@@Lucille69caddy Wanna go over Marciano's opponents ONE at a time? Shall we start with his 15 opponents that had LOSING records or his opponents that had 20 30 40 50+ LOSSES and were KO'd numerous times? He rides so many punches over he shoulders and back because of his crouching stance. It's actually very effective defense and he conserves a lot of energy by not bouncing around unnecessarily on his toes.

I saw a video of trainer Cus D'Amato and Muhammad Ali demonstrating boxing styles. Cus said the same thing about Rocky's bending to the side defense and how it would cause a taller fighter to reach in and become vulnerable. I think Marciano's left hand was underrated because I saw him put other fighters down with a quick double left hook. Missing in this video is how Rocky would damage a fighters arms. Ali said that even in the sparring they did for the computer "fight", the out of shape old Marciano was hurting his arms. That's something you never hear about other fighters doing.

The people out there who disrespect Marciano don't seem to realize how truly great he was. Think about it this way...Joe Louis was champ from 37-49, followed by Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott. Marciano beat Walcott and Charles twice. There is not a single man in Joe Louis' career that Rocky Marciano wouldn't have beaten, and he would have beaten a few of them in a more devastating fashion. Out of the champions BEFORE Louis, who would have had a chance against the Rock? Braddock? Sharkey? NO!!! You would have to go back to Dempsey or Tunney before Marciano even has to worry. AFTER Marciano does ANYONE think Patterson or Johannson beats Rocky? No. Liston wouldn't have beaten him either though that would potentially be a barn burner. SO...looking at the boxing world realistically, Marciano had the absolute potential to beat every fighter who ever put on gloves between Dempsey in 1921 and Cassius Clay in in 1964. If you look at the comments both Dempsey and Ali have made about Marciano, they werent fully convinced they could beat him either.

His inching forward is something notable for sure!! In watching the fights I couldn’t find one sequence where he was pressured to take a back step!! Never saw him trapped on the ropes! He was naturally a much heavier man who pared off the fat but did not lose power but gained stamina! Archie Moore said it was like fighting a propeller!!

Mike Tyson was gifted with type II fast-twitch muscle fibers. He came out the gate sprinting like 220 pound Quarter 🐎 Horse, while 185 pound Marciano came out the gate shuffling forward like Little 🐢Turtle. 1980's 20yr old phenom Mike easily KO's Rocky 10 outta 10 times!
