My life wasn’t easy as a kid. My parents split up when I was six and my mom fell into depression. My only friend from school moved away and I was left alone. What helped me live my childhood and learn things about life and, mostly, what gave me laughter and happiness were cartoons and, most precisely, Rocko’s Modern Life. Thank you, for satirizing the cruel world into something so funny and well thought. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and from the lonely kid I once was.

Rocko's Modern Life used to shock me as a kid. I remember in particular the christmas episode (Rocko chops down the tree, it looks scared and it dies) and the gym episode (noseblood+man getting his arms "ripped" off, including blood) and the chokey chicken one (lots of blood splatter in some kind of hospital). Now, as an adult, I find it amazing. It's fun to hear how things are "behind the scnes", controversies and whatnot.

My tastes have evolved, & I have moved far away from my former go-tos. One predilection that has endured is my affinity for RML. Be it with my older brother in our living room (15 yrs. ago) or from my comp. screen in college (now), I always have and always will love RML. It truly is a timeless masterpiece. 15yrs. of bliss and counting! Thanks! Peter

“They could at times be completely off-the-wall horrible mean people (or frogs) and at times you felt a little touched by them and their sensitivity” I love this about these 2 for that exact reason, they’re secretly the emotional heart of the show despite how how they get at each other’s throats (and Ed’s general assholery to Rocko borne from his insecurities around his lost youth) their love always feels truly deep and with a true history to it. One of the best TV couples ever.

They're classic sound effects but don't sound like they were recorded 40 years ago (like Warner Bros).Or were they created in foley specifically for the show? I heard that the inspiration for Rachel Bighead was that some cane toads can be hermaphroditic. Rachel is the feminine form, while Ralph is the masculine form? Who is to say that they can't change back and forth if it's in their nature to? Or depending on who the story needs? Genderfluidity more so? It could change day-to-day as long as it's explained. If that's the case, it would explain why Ed & Bev look and sound so similar. But then it wouldn't make sense for Ed to be upset since he would already know that's just what cane toads in-universe can do. Ed & Bev just never had "the talk" with the young Ralph due to the donut incident or something. It just seems like a step backwards for Ed after the donut reconciliation & his closet-clown episode. It's a bold new direction for Rachel; a change in character, for sure. The biggest issue is that if you never watch Static Cling & only stick to the original series, then you would never know about it. As far as we knew, the old Ralph was finishing a fruit bowl carving in a mesa until 2005. Does that mean any re-watch of the original series is misgendering? Would not watching Static Cling be erasure? Which is more harmful?? If they were genderfluid due to being hermaphroditic, then we could get Ralph & Rachel Bighead all in one. If there needed to be a Ralph episode in the future, the option would be there. If Rachel was needed in an episode, that would also be there. Just wondering about the consistency over-all. The only character I can recall from the original series that naturally had potential for a gender reveal setup was Heffer's brother Peter Wolfe. He wore pink, did ballet, was a cheerleader, & his dad would get furious, etc. "Told you he'd have a cow." Maybe Peter was mistakenly called Cindy due to Grandpa Wolfe's bad eyesight & he liked it? Whatever makes Peter comfortable. Not saying he can't do those things as a guy, but it would have been a nice payoff if the future (current?) version of him did transition. The seeds were there & it's not a stretch if you watch the original series. It would be consistent with the character. An adult re-watching the series could be like: "Ohh, so that's what they were referencing in the 90s." My unsolicited spec scripts for a reboot would send Rocko, Heffer, Filburt, & Spunky on a crash course of "modern life" over the 2000s-2010s to experience the gradual changes they had missed out on. The Winds of Change could see that Rocko is still unhappy & turns back the clock using something like the Bermuda Triangle clock to let Rocko & the gang adapt to modern life at their own pace. Rocko held on to the past due to the huge culture shock after being away for so long. It was jarring to see him so angry at change, then passively shrugging & just accepting it. Time travel shenanigans would be used only once to initiate a reboot. Going backwards to go forwards. Maybe the angry clock in the intro can be used to show that the series is rebooted to a general period of time by the Winds of Change. It would erase the "Baby Fathead" that Rocko hated, but the sentiment from Rachel to Ed & Bev could be adapted into growth as one of the "I wish I had done this sooner" moments. We can't change our past, but Rocko can change his as a cartoon. The falling out between Ed & Rachel could get prevented & they could have "the talk" so Rachel/Ralph is able to be whomever they want each episode. It would be canonically addressed, at least. If anything, it would give Ralph/Rachel a better future if Static Cling's events are avoided this time. Peter & Cindy Wolfe could get more development as siblings with Heffer. Peter can explore gender, Cindy's mental health can be addressed a bit more, and Heffer's weight could be less shamed in modern sensibilities. The family dynamics supporting of each other could work. The "my wife's a sea mammal" scene was in the original series, & Heffer would stick up for his family. The rest of a rebooted series could be a vehicle to comment on daily life issues that never seem to change. It would be necessary for the characters to adapt to changes they missed out on tho. We could see the perils of the internet thru Rocko's life, all the original streaming services popping up, & the introduction of the original O-Phone. Seeing Rocko's take on "modern 2000s life" in hindsight would be ironically post-modern, but it could work if written well & were as relatable as the original series. A prequel to our modern lives as seen only thru O-Town.

Actually, if you try some of them out, there are good ones like Adventure Time, Out There, Regular Show, Adventures of Gumball... and I think a few others. About the same amount of good and bad, really. Why you think they were better was because you were a kid. I feel the same way. But shows like Doug weren't as good as the few great ones like Rocko and Ren & Stimpy. I remember older people saying the same thing about our cartoons.
