Yes. A lot of that crew went on to incredible things ( Conrad Vernon, the director of the Shrek movies was also on that crew.) My crew on Camp Lazlo also had some future show creators like Thurop Van Orman and JG Quintel who is in production at CN on "The Regular Show!

Rocko was more of a personal project for me, but there was a lot of butting heads with the network which took the enjoyment out of it. Lazlo was more enjoyable because Cartoon Network at the time was a better home for the show. Advice? A life in art is the most challenging and rewarding path you can take. Make sure you have the stomach for it and take the ride. It's a blast!

Can’t believe how underrated this piece of advice is to young animators like me!

I oversaw every aspect of the show, and was the main story editor. I wrote quite a few premises and episodes myself. But I also had an amazing crew. Joe Murray

I watched the show about 2 months ago, since I recalled watching glimpse of it and enjoyed Camp Lazlo a while back. I say I quite enjoyed it despite not having much nostalgia for RML.

Yes, I wrote a book called "Creating Animated Cartoons with Character" that will be coming out this August through Random House/ Watson Guptil. It started as an ebook available on my site, and it did so well Random House caught wind of it.

This was fun. My younger brother loves Rocko's Modern Life, and he's an aspiring animator... And he got me hooked, too, so now we're just. Here watching everything we can find that has to do with Rocko. If you're even still reading the comments on these old videos, just wanted to say thanks for giving him something relatively harmless to focus on; in these days, it's easy to get sucked into all kinda of problems. Also, Rachel helped him come out to me!

My favorite character as a kid growing up, thank you!

Doesn't matter where i am, ANY time i mention Rocko's Modern Life, someone around me ALWAYS goes "Oh God I LOVED that show! I miss it so much, it was the best!" Then they start reminiscing on their fav parts. This was one of my ultimate fav shows and i still get a kick out of the few clips i can find. It'll never die.

What you didn't know that some of your amazing crew had created the best cartoons like Spongebob, (Stephen Hillenburg) Phineas and Ferb, (Dan Povenmire, Jeff "Swampy" Marsh) it all goes on.

Ren and Stimpy was my jam but I loved Rocko too!

Oh my god its the man himself!! Joe, you are one clever bastard for creating this cartoon. It was a defining moment in my development. Oh man.. and the episode with Wilbur and his infatuation with the jar of sauce, HAHA!

I don't like giving Viacom any of my money, but when I saw a Complete Series dvd of Rocko the other day, I just couldn't say no. Watching the series again for the first time since it went off the air, I'm realizing just how brilliant the show actually was and it makes me sad that there aren't any cartoons on these days with that level of imagination and creative anything-goes insanity. Kudos to you, good sir. I don't know what your cut of the dvd sales is, but whatever it is, it isn't enough.

Your My Inspiration, Mr Murray!

Of all the cartoon characters out there, Rocko is one character I can never seem to perfect for some reason. I always get the height or cranium wrong. I guess its because I'm way more dedicated to trial and error because Rocko is my favorite character and only act like I got it wrong subconsciously, but... dang... Anyways, kudos Murray. It was one heck of a series.

I am such a big fan!!! You are such an inspiration to me! I'm trying very hard to be a great animator and cartoon creator, although I'm still learning a LOT. Thank you so much for inspiring me to be a cartoonist!!! :D You are truly AWESOME

You're one of my top inspirational artists! I tried combining elements of Rocko's style into my drawings and I love my work now! I agree that a life in art is the most challenging but also the most rewarding. I plan to 3D model/animate for video games or CG movies. Hi Joe, i'm from Colombia and i used to watch your show at Nickelodeon, even in spanish the character's voices were so awesome. I'm still having good time watching the episodes.

I loved Rocko's Modern life as a kid, it was my favorite cartoon so far (along with Ren & Stimpy) and, at first, I didn't even know why, being honest, it was some sort of magic that kept me watching all the episodes over and over again....and now, as an adult, I still enjoy the series for a whole different reason....the original characters, the innuendos, the twisted humor...you were one of the few artists who managed to pull that off in a kids show back then...

I just got a chance to see thisshow again and its like a new experience. Back then I didnt understand all those adult jokes but now its just so funny.

It's nice to see Rocko is still alive in the creator's spirit, but it must be troublesome to get the whole team back together, especially with Tom Kenny (Heffer) is with Spongebob. Still, crazier things have happened so we'll never know. But I hope sooooooo much it does.

This show rocked my socks back in the day. It is my favorite cartoon still to this day.

Rocko will always be yellow to me! I draw him a little more like the show because I learned how to draw him by watching it on the television at 2 in the morning, but when I draw him, I don't draw him beige anymore ever since I found out about the incident with the plush toy company.

Dear Joe Murray, I thought Peaches from Rocko’s Modern Life was Rocko Rama’s brother-in-law in a demon costume due to the same voice (Tom Kenny) as a baby kangaroo from The Wild Thornberrys as well as Rocko’s uncle Gib Hootsen. The though takes contributions from the unused characters including Rocko’s elder sister Magdalene. - Rocko fan

i got skills hehe with drawing...but i dont know how to come up with my own characters i can only draw what i see ..i can get inspired from other artists but i want to make my own original characters but for some reason it doesnt translate on to paper i can only see them in my head...what should i do????

I was totally squealing the whole time as I watched this. I must be the biggest dork ever. LOL. I find it amusing that they would have to start correcting your Rocko after a while! Did you have the same issue with Lazlo?

Ren and Stimpy, Invader Zim, and this show were my favorites during the 90s. I laughed so hard as a kid. Its a shame they canceled them all, especially this show. Im sure theres a bunch of legal issues, but I think its BS that Nickelodeon wont make DVDs of these. I mean whats the point in keeping the rights of the show if your not going to use it? Anyways please keep up the good work. I wish this show was 100% yours :(

Hey Joe, I heard all about you since Rocko's Modern Life. I got the RML DVD from my cousin for Christmas in 2021 and the drawings and the style inspired me to make these characters for you to animate if you want to. I made the main character from the concept of Weird Al Yankovic and a horse to make him as well as Yankovic voicing Al Neighkolei. I made other characters associated the show that I have an idea for you to make, the shows is called "The Life of Weird Al" in the honor of him himself through time. I wanted to make these drawings in your style to become a show in the 2020s same with Rocko in the 90s, Lazlo in the 00s, Frog video I saw, and Let's go Luna in the 10's. I'm hoping that the characters I made for you would pass onto you. Do you want to animate these characters to make a show in the 2020s?

Do creators have a lot of influence on the script of the show? Or do they just work on concept designs? Also, I loved you as Ed Bighead.

As a kid, the show was great. But looking back, I can appreciate the writing, how there are those things that only the adults might understand. I've an itching question that may never be answered.. while I suspect that the character Ralph was based on yourself at least loosely, I wonder if you had a similar relationship with your dad, if that's why you wrote those two episodes? Oh yeah, and who are all the people hanging from the tree in the intro to "The Fatheads"?

Continue: joe Murray, I hope that doesn't bother you, but can you please revive rocko's modern life? I love this show and to me, rocko's modern life deserves more than 52 episodes, I mean joe, you're a genious, I'm sure you can make rocko's modern life again, just like 4 seasons of this show (which is all of em) I'm sure if rocko's modern life is revived in today's world, it would kick garbage shows of today's butt.

Cool. But I wonder... When he starts inking, the lines start out ratchety but immediately smooth out when he lifts the pen. How does he do that? I just got a new tablet and I'm trying to figure out how to ink like he is.

@joemurraystudio I can tell you might have clashed with nick because of some of the touchy jokes for kids in Rockos. Thanks. I can tell already that you MUST offer something fresh and new to the industry in order to work for it. Its been my dream since I was a Kid to be an animator and I'm willing to do what it takes to get there.
