Rockabilly Bassist "Slick" Joe Fick

Музыка

If you've spent any time on Memphis' famed Beale St. in the past few years, chances are likely that you've seen or at least heard of one of Bluff City's best known and most entertaining bands; a "high octane" Rockabilly trio known as The Dempseys, made up of Joe Fick (Upright Bass) Brad Birkedahl (Guitar) and Ron Perrone (Drums). In addition to being stellar musicians individually, the group delivered hours of awe-inspiring performances that included countless variations of instrument swapping and effortless instrumental gymnastics that had to been seen to be appreciated.

Drove from Cincinnati to Memphis on a whim. Walked into a bar to find the Dempseys playing. Knew right then it was town I would need to visit often, not to mention still trying to top the amazing show they put on. That was six years ago.

I knew Joe a bit down in Memphis when he was with The Dempseys, a great Rockabilly Trio, and watched him with them a couple times at the Elvis Presley Club and Restaurant on Beale Street while it was open, and crossed paths with him in the music stores a couple of times too. Just KZread The Dempseys Memphis to see insane live theatrics with his upright bass. Really nice guy too, liked him a lot.

Fun stuff! Your action is really tight. Do you find real gut helps? I use nylon.. I get sloppy an tired and lose definition in the slapping after three or four songs if I lower the action below 1/2 inch. Love the galloping, haven't picked that one up yet.

Fantastic playing. What strings are you using on the bass? I've been playing Rockabilly and R'n'Roll for thirty years and have settled with Presto or eurosonic steel core strings. Your string tension seems to be a lot looser than what I can get.

This guy's percussive nature sounds better to me then all the leading slap bassists, and I like they're music. Maybe it's because this is secondary and not an intentional technique but the freedom is amazing
