Rock Star Aimee Mann Channels Music Into A New Medium After Difficult Diagnosis
Grammy-winning star Aimee Mann’s life changed in 2020, when music began to sound distorted and unpleasant. Mann was diagnosed with vestibular migraines, and found that no treatment helped. She channeled her passion into new forms: sketches of daily life and painting. “The pictures are like the music and the captions are like the lyrics,” she tells NBC News’ Maggie Vespa. The shift helped reduce the symptoms Mann experienced from vestibular migraines. Now she’s reclaiming her music and the stage with a tour planned later this year.

I’m SO glad she’s finding a solution. I absolutely ADORE her music! Keep getting better, Aimee!
such a gifted artist
When I saw this thumbnail I yelled "Ohhhhh god please NOT Aimee now! I can't take anything happening to her right now!" while my eyes began to well up with tears. So freaking happy she's doing better. The irony of my reaction to here condition was not lost on me... definitely gave me pause. Something I need to really work on... chilling out on the stress ride. I LOVE YOU AIMEE! ❤
This woman has saved so many lives with her incredible music; she sang a cover to Leonard Cohen’s “Hold On”…the drawings appear to be her doing just that in her low key spectacular way ♾💎✨🫶
My favorite musician by FAR, and so glad her symptoms are improving! ❤️Aimee❤️
What an amazing individual she is. When "Voices Carry" was released, it sort of got stuck in my head... thing is it's still there. I'm not complaining. Very happy for where life seems to be taking her!
Very talented lady. Love her speaking and singing voice.
I’m absolutely always in awe of her, she’s truly a hero
I’m so sorry she has suffered with migraines. I get that all too well. She’s still as beautiful as her most beautiful day. LOVED her since the 80s.

Bless her heart. She’s a precious one.
My favorite Aimee Mann story was crit in my studio from I can't remember which male faculty when "Voices Carry" came up on my playlist. He vented about how much he hated Aimee Mann for the first 30 minutes or so of what was supposed to be a 1-hour crit instead of giving me any useful feedback on my paintings: "Is this Aimee Mann? Oh, I hate her, one-hit-80s-wonder, and so on, blahblahblahME," until another song from a more recent album came up in the queue, and he interrupted himself talking about himself to say, "Is this Aimee Mann?!? Ohhh, this is goood," and it took me over two hours to get that guy out of my studio. I still love her.

Wow. That faculty member sounds insufferable. Sorry you had to sit through 2 hours of that. Jeez.
Epic voice. And a lovely and kind friendly lady to me when I met her.
Wonderful woman, superb musician, great artist.
Art is just part of the answer. I'm sure she got help from others also. Art is essential, and it could save lives.... but we also have medicine to use as a tool for our wellbeing. And eachother 💌
Incredible woman and artist. Loved her since Voices carry in The Till Tuesday days.👍
I'm so sad to hear of this. Her music is so beautiful, uplifting, and powerful, She's incredible.
Your a great person ❤ and give good advice!

The "pandemic" (or the media around it) drove a lot of people with a predilection for nervous disorders over the edge. Decades from now we will come to the consensus that the handling of the "pandemic" caused incalculable greater harm than the Flu itself. The blamre for suicides, the depression, the nervous disorders all lay at the feet of those who would not let this be a Flu., and insisted on making it more for whatever reason.
She might quite possibly be a genius.....SHE COULD BE A PROFESSIONAL PAINTER OR COMIC BOOK MAKER...AND as a side one of the greatest singer songwriters of our time ......WOW
Vestibular migraine, like any other migraine, is a serious neurological disease, not a psychological disorder. Migraine is a genetic neurological condition. I am glad to see that mindfulness helped Aimee Mann, but the truth is that her vestibular migraine episode would have most likely weaned of on its own anyway. About 2% of vestibular migraine patients have chronic vestibular migraine and suffer for months and even years without a break. Most patients are in their late 20s to 40s and female, however men are affected too. Hormones play a part and patients get better after menopause and that is probably why Mrs Mann was lucky to get better so quickly. Most patients we see in our clinic have been misdiagnosed and haven't received proper treatment for years. Misconceptions and outdated medical knowledge are unfortunately ripe. Your video here is also not correct and based on medical information from the past. Since 1997 vestibular migraine is catalogued as a neurological disease, not a psychological disorder by the WHO. Some patients also get an accompanying headache or suffer with other migraine types (there is many) but the headache is not present in all patients. Vestibular migraine is treated exactly like other migraines with different medication. I am very disappointed about the wrong information in this video. Migraine patients face discrimination based on very outdated misconceptions, all while dealing with a very disabling and life changing illness. You should have known better. Lifestyle is an important factor to minimize migraine symptoms but is never the cause. Stress also worsens other neurological illnesses eg like MS or Parkinsons but is never the cause. If you are affected by (vestibular) migraine seek treatment in a headache centre or see a headache specialist or contact one of the many migraine charities and organisations.

Oh I have a dear friend who is 84 and has suffered from these headaches since her early 70s! Horrible. No doctor can or will help her. I have been with her and she is pretty much dismissed with Nortriptyline. Now a doc took her off that. Any ideas? We live in Minneapolis. Thanks.

@@kpn3488 there is several organisations in the US. Try the American Migraine Foundation, National Headache Foundation, American Headche Society. I am not so familiar with help in the US, but one of those should be able to provide you with the right contacts and information. Maybe there is even a local organisation near you. I hope you will ne able to find her the medical support she needs.

"Wrong information"? "You should have known better"? I am puzzled by this scolding. The news story established at the outset that there are medications for this disorder. If you are in the medical field, then you must be aware that no medication works well for everyone. Why dismiss stress as merely a complicating factor? For many people, stress ends up being the most important factor and the area where treatment is most effective. As a psychologist, I encourage my clients to investigate and to understand the connections among "paychological" disorders AND "neurological" disorders, not to dismiss either aspect of how the system works. Oh, and to Aimee Mann, many thanks for your songs!
I wonder if those symptoms were a result of the “Vaccine”? I’ve had tinnitus, headaches, dizziness, and sleep loss.

I wonder if her condition started because of the JAB?
@58landman

If she took the shot it might be directly related although most docs would rather jump into a fire than admit it. I was in great health and got harassed into taking the J&J. Within a month I developed chronic urticaria, angioedema and a flare in my arthritis that had barely bothered me at all. Still dealing with it too. As for Aimee, I'm a big fan and I hope she is able to get smoothed out and back to good health. She's a treasure and a fantastic writer and performer.
