Steven Tyler was a roadie for Zeppelin on their first tour, he was also a huge Yardbirds fan. Rock On!
When this album was released I was 15. My bedroom was on the corner of my apartment bldg, so one window on the concourse and one on the ave. I put one speaker in each window and let it rip. Black Dog, Rock n Roll Battle of Evermore and Stairway. People were stopping in the street to listen to this. Over 50 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Zeppelin can do that to you.

@Sl4yer7123 I met Van Halen in Glasgow the day after I saw them play at the Glasgow Apollo in the 70s. They walked down the road from their hotel to get something to eat in a sandwich shop. I stood and chatted to them for a while and got their autographs. Great days!
This is my favorite Zeppelin song. The entire band approached it as if they were playing the lead.

I'd argue that JPJ didn't tbf, he's playing a rather straight-forward bassline. I would've loved to see John Entwistle give it a go with his Thunderfingers: he was the original lead bassist

Also, remember that the opener version on ‘The song remains the same’ is, for me, better. Way better. Marginally slower, but opens up space for Page. His duckwalk groove on stage? Wow. Simply wow. His swing and funk? Hell, Plant plays straight into that. And Bonzo and JPJ groove their way thru. What a band.
Greatest concert opener of all time.

For mix-tapes too...
This song began as a spontaneous jam initiated by Bonham taking out his frustrations on the drums after they had difficulties with another song. Bonzo started bashing the drums and Jimmy Page jumped in with the guitar riff and the next thing you know Plant is belting out the atypical straight forward lyrics of the first verse totally improved. They jammed it for a bit and immediately decided to craft it into a real song.
Just a ridiculously good song from a legendary band. Great pick for a throwback.
Ian Stewart, original member of the Rolling Stones turned road manager for the Rolling Stones, was playing the piano on this one. Great reaction!

@tracyyork1428

@pauljones9061 Sorry, but you're incorrect. In the very earliest days of the Stones, Stewart was a genuine member, and he set up their gigs because he was the only person with regular access to a telephone (through his day job). It was Stewart that transported the band to and from their live shows. When Andrew Oldham became their manager, he told the group that Stewart didn't fit the visual image he thought best for the band; he would however continue to coordinate their itinerary and play piano in studio. He was never a member of the Faces. Their keyboardist was Ian McLagan. Faces guitarist Ron Wood joined the Stones in the mid 70's and is still a member. Sadly, Ian Stewart died suddenly at 47 in 1985. He still sometimes worked with the Stones.
Actually, Ian Stewart, piano player for The Rolling Stones, played piano on this cut.

Ahhh, the memories. I was the bassist & lead singer in a R&R cover band in the 70's & we did this song last every night. The reason was that we did it in the original key and it would blow my voice doing the Plant imitation. Some nights I would literally feel dizzy singing it & could barely talk afterwards. Years later I saw Plant do it live and he vocally dropped it down an octave on the higher levels. I just kicked myself mentally for not thinking of that but I thought it was cheating.

Led Zeppelin didn't do singles as they didn't want to be bound by the constraints and expectations of singles. They relied on touring/live performance, word of mouth and album sales.
