Coffee maker does the same thing if you don't put the grounds in the top. Just run water through it with a tea pack in the cup, add sugar to it and presto. Fresh hot tea

Flavor is not the reason you aren't supposed to heat water in a microwave. The water can superheat to above boiling temperature but not actually boil until the surface is disturbed when you pick it up, at which point it explodes boiling water all over your hands and face. This phenomenon is called a bump.
