I think you're not explaining everything about the process. I would imagine that any EV would have to be modified to use this system of battery swooping. Additionally, does the modification change the EV's ability to use the current charging methods?

I presume this would need to be standardized to be broadly useful. That probably raises a nightmare of who owns the batteries. Batteries don't last forever, but that could theoretically be baked into the cost. If it is baked in, then that would make long term ownership much more attractive. However, what happens if there is battery damage outside of normal wear and tear? Recent reporting has said that minor accidents can cause battery damage expensive enough to total the vehicle. Is Ample insuring the batteries or does the customer's insurance/the customer have to figure it out?

Yea the guy says the car has to he fitted with their battery holder. Which I would assume would mean giving up your OEM battery or having them sell it for you (tho in CA you can request your car parts back). Then my guess is a monthly membership or something to keep you coming back and probably a $50-$100 per swap fee (similar to a gas fill up). Just my guess

I have made drawings and been pushing for this method of LARGE EV power solution for over 3 years now. Glad to see it's finally being realized as a practical solution. This way SMALLER LIGHTER short-range batteries can be used. Increasing vehicle mobility and needs for an extra heavy-duty frame. Very logical to "fill up/replace" the battery instead of relying on a single HUGE BATTERY that must have power for extended range. That is also more dangerous and flammable as the size and weight increases.

Does the conversion still allow normal charging also - or only swapping? Glad to see innovation is continuing, I will continue to monitor the situation. The battery range and charging are the biggest hinderance to going fully electric.

I see big issues here... batteries have a "Cycle" life as in how many times you can discharge/charge them. Someone can bring their 34 month old battery in, get a newer one for the cost of a charge yet their battery is close to the recommended 3 year swap out point.. What would be more ideal is having this be a super fast and sealed charging station where your battery is removed from car, moved to a sealed protected and chilled charging area, rapid charged, then put back into the car. Even if it took 15 minutes which would be WAY fast for the car it would be acceptable.. Course what places like hotels and parking garages should do is set up robotic parking of charged cars. Person parks, gives the spot # and says I need to charge the car. a robotic attendant (or even a human one - job creation?) moves the car to a charging station and plugs it in and while it is charging, moves a charged car in the next slot (have 4-6 charging stations to a parking spot and text the owner that its charged and returned to its spot.

My thoughts on the subject are twofold. The good is obvious but one specific aspect is how these startups would, if successful to a certain degree, evolve into fuel station company equivalents. You'd basically end up with two payments instead of one. You'd buy a car and then match a battery pack plan to your driving habits. A driver who needs more yearly milage will likely pay more overall per month but the idea would be that you could only use the pack with an active susbcription. If you don't pay then the pack would be remotely disabled (and tracked, since it isn't your property in such a business model). The EVs wouldn't necessarily come with a pack, though there could be programs that offset costs via using a pack you own or purchased with the vehicle with the pack being used as a core charge. After a large number of miles (the estimated lifespan of the pack is a good guess at that number), that core would be absorbed into the plan and you'd begin paying as if you didn't own the pack itself (changes to plan perks and termination of subscription terms ensue) but you'd be given the option of buying a new core (or by having the core built into monthly charges so you can leave the subscription at any time). The other aspect is the obvious downside of it all: standardization. While I don't believe this is bad for the future, right now it could cause some issues. The main one would be the success of such a model itself in the current market. Unfortunately, this tech should be easy for companies like this to build a business similar to what I've described off of. Yet it isn't due to EVs being so new and barely any battery standards being introduced. If the UN could create some sort of battery size/shape/connector/software standard which didn't limit EV manufacturers too much vs their current "freedom" of design then these stations could be run by even small scale entrepreneurs (i.e. a mom/pop mechanic getting one of these swapping stations instead of an attached carwash) due to not having to worry about model compatability limiting customer base size. If that weren't to happen, you'd likely see one of these startups partbering with a EV manufacturer or two before any of these stations actually end up being built.

They neglected to include the costs. What are the costs of retrofitting a car with Ample's equipment, and the cost of swapping? Also, what are their batterie's kWh? And finally, it's unlikely you'll be the only person in line, so it'll take longer than 5 minutes. I saw a video about a customer at one of Nio's battery swapping facilities. It took him more than 30 minutes due to the backlog of cars.

Here's the major issue that the car manufacturer has to get around. Initial price of the battery to the consumer. As a consumer, I would be paying for a brand new battery, but upon the first battery swap, I could be getting a battery that is years old or may already be developing a defect. And if the battery is defective, does that effect the warranty of the car? If car manufacturers plan on this type of battery swapping tech, then there is no way they could incorporate the price of the batteries into the overall cost of the car, but somehow I think they would try. If you think the fine print of a car agreement is long now, just wait until this tech is included in that agreement.

So getting out of the Tesla like world and getting to actual reality 1. I guess everyone is assuming that in no way ever a driver will damage a battery driving around? 2. Doesn't creating all those batteries kind negate being "green"? 3. We have the raw materials to do something in mass quantities like this? 4. I'm assuming they're cheap if you're planning to have them transferred out so often?

If they store this many batteries, one of them is bound to blow up. It is in the odds nothing you can do about it.

The main problem is that one battery swap costs $20. I would rather just charge cheaply at home overnight.

it's cool but i am fairly certain that we will soon have cheap and fast charging batteries with high range so i think this will become obsolete soon.

I'm pretty sure this is going to fail in the future. Due to costs of the battery, but also the very high possibility of manufacturers making it difficult to replace batteries (different battery designs/shapes, different locations and so on). Requiring the driver to go to their local dealership to replace.

This doesn’t account for battery degradation. If I have brand new battery why would I want to receive a battery that’s been on the road for 3 years simply because it’s been fully charged

Unfortunately there won't be a "standard " battery because as with everything it'll be a money making venture these ev's are no greener than ice when factoring in build mining etc. It's the equivalent of a 4 wheel mobile phone all hype to make money.
