I think the fact that the ending wasn't exactly what everyone wanted is the strongest part of this film. If it has gone the way we all wanted it to go it would just be a cute story with some great set pieces but by ending it the way it did I felt a great feeling of "life can't always go the way you want or expect". That they managed to have this theme without being nihilistic or pessimistic is what really made this a great film for me.

You make an excellent point. I have thought a lot about the ending since I saw this movie and I have warmed up to the ending a lot. I think the ending is certainly impactful and the fact it goes in a different direction was a really bold choice that I can definitely appreciate.

*Spoilers* I didn't expect dog and robot to end up with each other, but I was hoping soooo much that they would at least lock eyes one more time in a sign of recognition, and nod to each other and then move on with their new lives. I know it may be a bit cliche, but I think that would've given me a bit more closure and I would've enjoyed it just a little more. Still, highly recommended, can't wait to see it again some time in the future and look for all those beautiful details.

(SPOILERS) I'm of the personal belief that Robot didnt want to rob the other robot of the experience and love that he was given from dog, in the final dream where robot visions himself reuniting with dog, you can see the other robot is clearly upset, it's likely robots subconscious telling him that though he's happy to reunite with someone who can give him love and validation in return he's taking that away from someone else, plus robot already has rascal, who clearly cares a great deal about him and gives him the love and validation that he needs. Though I would have loved to see the two reunite, sometimes we don't need a fairy tale happy ending. This ending came out very realistic and mature. I love this movie!

I noticed those details within that final dream and I have to say that it would have been a double edged sword if robot reunited with dog. Thinking about the ending a little more now I am glad that the music confirms to dog that robot is at least doing well. Such a fantastic movie that will continue to stick in my mind for a long time.

yes i also agree that the robot might have felt like if him & dog reunited tin would’ve been sad because he knew how much pain it was to live without his bestfriend for so long. he wouldn’t have wanted tin to feel empty like he did or take away dogs new life, even though it saddened me that they didn’t reunite 😢.. i think on a subconsious level dog KNEW robot was the one playing their song when he was on the roof. & it made my heart happy that when dog walked away sad when the song was over tin started clapping to cheer him up then held his hand in the end 😢❤ i also like to think that because nyc is such a small world they will eventually run into eachother again & maybe all of them can become bestfriends ❤

It's bittersweet movie and I like that. When I watched it, I felt like their friendship could also be read as romantic love. Nevertheless what kind of relationship the two have, they get seperated by external forces, like if a friend had to move away to study or get better at a hospital for a long period of time. It made me wish they'd meet again before it would get too complicated to fix. But I was also aware that it isn't bad to move on, if they happened to find someone else. When the pal bot was introduced, it felt wrong to have him go through loss when he never did anything wrong, so I'm glad both of their respective partners got to stay and be happy.

  • @kaneeddy

I was happy that the characters could find that connection they were both longing for, it’s just so bittersweet because I wanted that to be between the two main characters. Both the robots new friend and the dogs as you said didn’t deserve to be left alone either because they were good, it just once again adds to the complexity of these feelings and is a really strong statement overall.

It’s been more than a week since I watched this movie and I still haven’t recovered. Devastated is the correct word to describe my emotional state after watching it. But it is bitter sweet, there is hope, and the overall message is positive. The Portuguese have a word that is difficult to directly translate into English: suadade. For me, this movie expresses what that word means and manages to do it without dialogue. Amazing. I don’t remember the last time a movie left me feeling that way.

not friends, spoiler ahead: Only would make sense the last dream and the decision of robot of not go down is because they were a couple and now Tin and dog ar a couple and Rascal and robot are another couple. The dream, where they hug and then Robot dreams with Rascal apearing means that The releationship is monongamous, as robot intervining might mean the end of both the relationships.. Then Robot realises that Rascal as a equal relaionship with him, simboliced by the cassette tapes, but Dog was the one deciding te plans and leading ( which causes the beach incident) Robot knows Rascal loves him better.

Yes, strongly agree with the cassette tapes as a symbolic picture compare to dog. Cause I remember that robot see other robot when they are traveling to water park is kind of losing their mind as a simple accompany with kid. That's why robot like dog so much cause the treatment is so different as a simple accompany "Robot". After I watched second times I found something in the begining, Rascal meet Robot & Dog to go down to the train, Robot also turn his head to Rascal . Really love this movie, hope it will get 64th Academy Awards.

While they can be interpreted as a couple for sure, I think the movie doesn't make it clear. The tin robot is a "pal bot" and so might be our main Robot. He might be simply programmed to be friends and completely dedicated to one person at a time and doesn't want to complicate things with Rascal by meeting Dog. This makes us interpret the movie however we want whether it's past romance or lost friendship or something else.

We sat in a line for a panel and started reading it together, laughing and smiling as it went, quietly commenting as we both moved through the story. I haven't seen the film, but it sounds like it ends EXACTLY the same way, because we were both sitting there, weeping over this little book, and smiling at the same time. This movie was garbage. Why would Robot not let Dog know he was all right? Instead he was content to let Dog think he killed his best friend. The movie chose a sad ending simply to try and be relevant.

I hated the ending. It FELT like a betrayal. Why did we even bother watching these characters reunite? I WANTED the happy fairytale ending. I don't give a hoot.

I think it was a happy ending, robot was no longer broken and abandoned and was in a happy relationship with rascal. I think dog didn't want to be with robot he just wanted not to be alone. So good for robot to find someone who treats him well.

@@karlacastillo6838 that is the worst interpretation ever. You think Dog did not care for Robot?
