Robin Kid is a Dutch multidisciplinary artist born in 1991. His work ranges from ballpoint pen drawings and oil and tempera paintings to hyper-realistic sculptures in silicone and bronze and installations. He presents Kingdom of Ends, his latest exhibition at Galerie Templon from September 2 to October 21, 2023.
Robin Kid, raised by his grandparents in a mining basin, was creative from an early age. A solitary child, he found objects and toys from all eras in his attic, which he used to create worlds inspired by TV series and films. Very involved, he pays attention to every detail of what he builds, and develops experiences and atmospheres in all the games he plays.
Robin Kid is a self-taught artist, leaving school in his teens and not considering an academic path to art school. But his desire to create is unquenchable, and whenever he wants to try his hand at a technique, he learns it from books or KZread. So when he wants to make a hyper-realistic sculpture, he immerses himself in documentaries or books on Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan or Duane Hanson to understand the techniques, experiment with the materials used and learn for himself.
Nurtured by pop culture, and in particular the childlike and adolescent worlds developed by American television, Kid is the voice of his generation. His value system and ideals are forged by these programs, which are an alternative reality where stories always end well and everything works out in the end. In his work and recent exhibitions such as It's All Your Fault, Robin Kid shows his disillusionment with the promises of this American Dream.
In Kingdom of Ends, the artist takes up the codes of mass culture and advertising, where everyone is beautiful and everyone is nice, and plunges the viewer into a theme park experience. Robin Kid twists these familiar icons of consumerism with the addition of objects such as axes and baseball bats. His works, inspired by the combines paintings of Robert Rauschenberg or Jim Dine and the German Capitalist Realism movement, are like toys or panoplies for children that make adults think.
Kingdom of Ends is an exhibition that blends a Walt Disney experience with a less rosy Chris Cunningham or Larry Clark reality. Kid seduces the viewer into looking behind the curtain of the spectacle offered by today's mass culture, social networks, 24-hour news and the pressure of a world with a troubled future for his generation.
