The man who should have been the 37th President of the United States. Up to that point, a Kennedy had never lost a single election they have ever entered, RFK in the Oregon Primary was the first. He risked and wagered his whole political career on the California Democratic primarily and when he claimed victory in California at a little after midnight on June 5th, 1968 was now the front runner to win the Democratic nomination and therefore the favorite to defeat Nixon in the general election that November. We all know what happened a few minutes after claiming victory. What could have been. In my opinion the greatest tragedy in American history, even bigger than his brothers assassination because America needed RFK in the White House more at that time. Instead we got Nixon, who put us on a path of decade after decade of the decline of America

RFK unfortunately lost this state. As his campaign aides said, "The state had no ghettos, poor people or oppressed people." It was one big white suburb. Also, his support for gun control hurt him in Oregon. Seven days after he lost Oregon, he won California with a mountain of votes and after he thanked his supporters, he was shot.

Robert Kennedy's position on gun control was miscast by his opposition in Oregon as a threat "to take away your guns". That tactic was whipped up across the state and caused him to lose the primary.

Robert Kennedy ultimately lost the Oregon Primary to Eugene McCarthy 43 to 39 percent in voting. This had represented the first time that a Kennedy had lost a primary (his brother John had won all the Democratic Primaries he had entered in 1960) Mr. Kennedy realized that he had to win decisively in the California Primary that followed in June 1968 if he had any chance to defeat Hubert Humphrey and win the Democratic Party candidacy for president. Although he did win in California-tragically he was murdered the night of his victory June 5, 1968

It was not only the first a Kennedy had lost a primary, it was the first time a Kennedy had been defeated in any election of any kind. It remained the only one until Teddy's presidential bid in 1980.

Senator Robert Francis Kennedy also won the South Dakota Presidential Primary on June 4,1968. South Dakota Senator George McGovern was a dear friend and staunch supporter of the late Senator Kennedy. You know, I found Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey to be a coward not entering the 1968 Presidential Primaries! Senator Robert F. Kennedy announced his candidacy on March 16, 1968. President Lyndon B. Johnson announced he wasn't running for re-election on March 31,1968 and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey announced his candidacy on April 27,1968 but declined to run in the Presidential Primaries! He obviously expected to be handed the Democratic Nomination in Chicago! During his victory speech, Senator Kennedy said ~ "I would hope now that the California Primary is finished, now that these Primaries over, that we can now concentrate on having a dialogue or a debate, I hope, between the Vice President and perhaps myself on what direction we want to in the United States." Senator Kennedy was heard to have said, just before he went down to claim victory, "I'm going to chase Hubert's ass all over the country!"

The beginning of this entire clip is shown at the Gateway Shopping Center area just west of the Gateway Fred Meyer on 102nd Avenue and Northeast Halsey. It was actually on the ground that is known as the Fun-o-rama location annually every year, for a small fairground just east of 102nd Avenue and Northeast Halsey. There's a longer clip somewhere in KZread where they have Kennedy's voice dubbed over this appearance event on his campaign, speaking about the recent loss of Martin Luther King, as it shows more of that background area at the Gateway shopping district as you'll recognize businesses in the background. Her parents took my younger brother and sister to see Robert Kennedy speak that night in the Gateway area, only one mile west of our home where we grew up. I was later saddened that I didn't go to see him, because the assassination occurred a couple weeks later in Los Angeles.
