Bobby Kennedy would’ve changed this country for the better. America hasn’t been the same since we lost JFK & RFK. You would never hear a politician speak like this today. Rest In Peace Harry Belafonte. The fact that Carson had him host this show for a whole week and the amount of historical content that was created is astounding. I can only imagine when Harry arrived in Heaven - Bobby & Martin Luther King were there to greet him.

I met Bobby one month before he was killed. At 9 years old it was a strong and emotional moment. But his loss one month later was the most painful thing I can recall as a child. I cried clutching the photo he signed for me many days. A great loss that changed the course of history.

The intelligence and patience in this thoughtful interview is unimaginable for a late night talk show in our time. On Lettermen or Leno, it would be wisecracks by the hosts and posturing by the politicians. Even in 1968, Johnny Carson would not have conducted such a highbrow dialogue. In fact, Ed McMahon seemed uncomfortable having to shift from a heartfelt talk about poor youth being deprived to an intro for a commercial for a decorating idea.

In the 1960's when I was a child my Dad brought home an LP of Harry Belafonte singing with Greek singer Nana Mouskouri. I loved every song on that album and played it over and over again. I still have that old album. Can't bear to part with it even though it was transferred to CD years ago. Harry was always good about making international singers famous. Years later I got to see Nana perform live at Lincoln Center and she said "If it wasn't for Harry Belafonte I wouldn't be here." I hope she isn't too sad today.

Look up a speech that RFK made, while out stumping for the voting rights act. He told the crowd of mostly Caucasians, "Once upon a time, there were signs which stated 'No Dogs and No Irish'. You could find those signs on employment agencies, at the docks, outside bars and boarding houses." He said, don't forget that we were the ones that the larger non-Catholic WASP establishment were trying to keep out.

It was clear that you were right even before I looked it up myself. It was evident from the question that Harry Belafonte asked about whether the electorate would have a chance to vote for someone who would be willing to dare greatly even if that meant potentially failing greatly that this interview took place before RFK launched his tragically short-lived candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. He announced that he was running for president a month-and-a-half later (March 17, 1968).

At the time, I can recall wanting to meet three famous people, harry Bellafonte, Sidney, Poitier, Lucille Ball, and Vincent Price. And I’ll tell you something else. At the risk of being accused of being woke, I was a little white boy that didn’t know no difference between black folk and white folk. @@frankcheers7529 I agree with you, with the exception that Harry had to let Bobby in. Anyone who has read books on Bobby Kennedy, knows that Bobby was willing to learn and change his mind on things. He went from being a conservative Democrat to a liberal Democrat because not only was he was willing to listen, but he willing to go to the source. So I believe that, Harry was proud to invite Bobby to come through those doors, and Bobby was honored to be invited by people like Harry.

I’ll never forget watching just after midnight that victory speech from California. I’ll never forget watching the next night when Frank Mankiewicz announced that Bobby had died. I’ll never forget watching all the days and nights following. I’ll never forget at 11 years old the day my childhood ended. I’ll never forget losing my Hero. At almost 66 I still ask “WHY” and cry. Bobby, the best President we never had. His Son (Jr.) is an insult and embarrassment to his Dad's Intelligence, Common Sense, Memory and Legacy. Bobby would vote for Joe Biden.

Biden is essentially a Reagan-era Republican, right down to campaigning on assault weapon bans. It’s just that Republicans have gone so far right that, as Ailes always dreamed, the Republican base of today would never have turned on Nixon. Communists. Ridiculous.
