I am an engineer, and I have to say two things about this machine: 1. It is the least efficient wine opener I could possibly imagine. 2. I want one!

You are an ignorant engineer who could never build one more efficient you stupid man. This machine is very efficient and stored all that energy and was able to complete the task.

Efficiency of energy use, perhaps, but what about efficiency of labor to manufacture? How about all the energy that was consumed in fabricating all of the parts that went into building it? One would have to open a lot of wine bottles with 100% energy efficiency to balance out the energy footprint of constructing the machine. My point #1 was intended as dry humor, not a serious criticism. I regret that this was not evident.

hahaha, excellent!! 1. I'd like to get my hands on it before you do though. Engineers are renowned for their need to duct tape everything.... and in this case, that would clearly spoil the wine pouring process. 2. I know you, like myself, don't really care about how inefficient this contraption is because It's wine and entertainment all rolled into a beautifully complex piece of machinery that looks like it could result in the loss of a finger or two after a few glasses. Allround, perfect.

Maybe a little over engineered

Not a single reasonable human being would look at this and say "Oh, the purpose of this thing is clearly to pour a glass of wine." It's an art piece, like any Rube Goldberg machine is.

Agreed joiless is not reasonable and the purpose of this thing is not "clearly to pour a glass of wine." The purpose of this MACHINE!!!! is to open the bottle of wine and then pour a glass of wine !!!!!!!

This machine has it all - artistic ingenuity, mechanical design and a sense of humor

An designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to remove.

For those with a machining/machinery background you know what you are looking at, which is an amazing piece of work....

When you have no wine opener so you got to improvise :D

This should be steam powered and in my house, I'm sure my wife would love it as much as I would. I don't even drink wine, I'd invite guests over and buy the cheapest bottle of wine and force them to watch me do this... every time they come over.

I have a collection of wine openers at home, but not this one. Must have, after I get a bigger house, that is.

That just seems a real technical piece of art and masterpiece, only in England!

I find this machine very convenient, because sometimes I need a bottle opened and a glass of wine poured.

What would really top this off is a solar panel powering a stirling engine that drives the hand crank.

After the absolutely perfect removal of the cork and the elegant approach to the wine glass, I was expecting the machine to then pour the wine everywhere but in the glass.

Genius ! I love the steampunk désign.

The thing I like best is that the cranking is actually lifting the counterweight for the pouring machine. So his cranking is winding the spring of the pouring machine while opening the bottle.

Seems like a great opportunity to have it actually be powered by steam.

Excellent as a piece of art. Entertaining, precise and has a lot of control, which I think is the main point here. However, I think I'd still use my hands and a traditional cork screw.

It's crazy that the whole thing is run off one crank!
