Roaming my Old Stomping Ground, Barking, UK 🇬🇧

Welcome to my channel. I'm Roaming Ree.
I'm back in the UK for the summer. I thought I'd visit some of my old stomping grounds.
My first stop is the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. Barking Town Centre and street market. I must be getting old. I thought it was 20 years, but it was closer to 40 years. Whatta mistake to make.
As a Londoner can't believe how much the area has changed and sadly not for the better.

I was born on the gascoigne estate in 75. Moved to dagenham in 83, chadwell heath in 91 then Sydney in 97. Visits back to these places make me sad, such fond memories but now it looks terrible and so uninviting

I had relatives in a road by the old Westbury pub and mum used to come from Manor Park to Tescos in Barking for triple Green Shield stamps. One day during a train strike we walked all the way, that was in the late 6o's. Think the Westbury has gone? We used to come over for the Barking Carnival every year which finished in Barking Park. Good times when I was a kid. Does it still have that chemical smell?

Thanks for a great memory and comment. Westbury has gone, in its place, more flats of course. God I remember the Green Shield stamp, everybody would collect em, such simpler times. Barking and East Ham Carnival were great, nothing like that exists now. The area around the market smelt like crap 💩.

@@Roamingree that’s a shame but it’s similar in a lot of towns, at least the community is supportive. Hopefully in the next few years things will turn around. I was told the chemical smell came from the large chemical factory on the Thames? Maybe not there now. When I was a little kid I used to hear a dog barking when we visited (London was a lot quieter than it is now!) and I thought that’s how Barking got its name. One thing I have found out more recently is that Barking was home to the largest fishing fleet in the UK and brought catches from as far as Iceland during the 19th century. Railways and ice production killed that off and a lot of the people moved to Hull. In those days fishermen just disappeared, tragic.

@ohyeah2816 yes real shame, the factories are all closed. All along the Thames. Huge plastic factories in Silvertown to the Tate and Lye plant. I remember going to visit the Tate and Lye factory on a school trip and getting loads of sweets and drinks 🤣. Apparently a small plant is still in Silvertown. I really hope these towns make a return.

Looking at the prices the stuff for sale has to be utter tat but have to say you couldnt expect anything else . Worked in Ilford/Barking many years ago and really enjoyed it but have to be honest while we in the North East are seeing the UK deteriorate and we have plenty bad areas ourselves I am still glad to live up here because it looks awful down there.

To think we had a M&S, Sainsbury's and many good shops and went completely downhill with the closure of Woolworths. Used to love the old arcade in the 70's , Tam tams selling ribbons, patches etc. Saying that, the fruit stall outside the station is really very good and Seafayrer chippy is still there so not all is lost!

Good old Barking back in the days when it had every shop fancy shops, skills shops, everything, who remembers the food court in vicarage field and now it's got nothing, and now it's full of rubbish generic fast foods outlets, betting shops, barbers and coffee shops same old rubbish nothing good I'm worried about the future i believe by 2050 it could end up like the middle east if not worst looking war turn and boarded up the government know how bad things are getting but they brush the problems under the carpet, criminals love the UK and the police are powerless half the time, you talk about the changes that's happened just imagine the next 20 years mate we all be moving to another country looking for a visa !!!!

@@deano_bites Thanks for the comment. As I said I remember when Vicarage Fields opened, it was suppose to target shoppers who would regularly go to Ilford or West End, sadly all that's gone. It was a dire dirty place now. I really worry about the grandkids now. I can't see London getting any better and like you said may be time to look for a move abroad.
