I was excited enough that they used the R2 as an opportunity to "right-size" their SUV to something smaller that still takes advantage of their platform, but I literally jumped when I saw the R3 and the R3X. As someone who loves smaller cars and has wanted to see more of these sorts of vehicles in the United States, I had almost given up hope that we'd be seeing anything like the R3 come to market. Charge port should be on the passenger side for if street charging gets deployed (in right side traffic countries), but for maximum compatibility with Tesla Supercharger stations, that implies that passenger *front* is where it should be (meaning that pulling forward into a Supercharger stall would put the port in the same place as backing a Tesla into that same stall).

Rivian was the first car company I was ever legitimately excited about, as someone who loves EVs, but also likes to go off-road. When I was a teen Toyota came out with the Highlander Hybrid. A supposed hybrid SUV you could take off road. My buddy who was a mechanic for Toyota said, "don't ever actually that, it will destroy this car," and I was deflated. When I saw how sweet the first truck was going to be, and how CAPABLE they were going to be, I was pretty much all in. Sadly I can't afford and r1s or r1t, but I might be able to sink my teeth into an R2, and that's super exciting!

@@markplott4820They may not be making a profit YET, but most car companies don't the first few years. Tesla also didn't make a profit for the SIX years, but they sure are now. But to say that they have "nothing to show" for it, that's just demonstrably false. I see Rivian's on the road literally every day now. Just because I, and many others, could empty out our savings and still not afford their current lineup, doesn't mean they don't exist. And with them releasing a much more affordable model, with a likely even more affordable model in the future, means that they're confident in their business plan to keep going in far into the future. And good for them. There are people like me who want capable Electric trucks and suvs. If they can start making them more affordable, more power to them.

At this point I plan on buying another small commuter vehicle when my wife's Leaf's batteries degrade to the point that it only works for my short commute. Love the fold flat seats. R3 is great design language. And NACS standard for all these vehicles was a big reveal... I wonder when they plan to convert thier charging network? In his post interview with Marques Brownlee, RJ did mention that the single motor, small battery variant of the R2 will be only 270 miles, which is a little different than what he said in the reveal... where he seemed to indicate 300 miles for all variants. It was also not clear to me if R3 will use the same battery options as the R2... being smaller, lighter, and more aero it may get more range out of the same pack. Or if being 5 inches shorter means it will use smaller packs and offer the same range? Maybe its far enough away they dont want to promise anything. Overall a very cool event that was not only on time, not in the middle of the night, and didnt last all day. Very much appreciated by normal folks who dont have the patience for multihour long streaming "events".

I really like both of these designs. I think I like the R3 a little better- looks a bit like a little HOT HATCH. If I owned one I'd put smaller wheels and tires on it and make it look even more so. Also like the R2 but not as much. A little disappointed no mention of the R2T. Also wish there was a no frills trim level- I don't need or want most of the gee-whiz techno gadgets- just a basic car that goes when I want it to and stops when I want it to.

I think the Rivian R13 is going to be the cross over SUV for the masses. I know that if I were to purchase a Rivian, the R13 would be it.

What's the R13? That future model is probably 20+ years away, R3 will have to do when it's finally built in 5 years or so

Love both of them, I might put my name in the preorder hat. My only annoyance is they should have put the charge port on the rear driver like Tesla. No reason they couldn't on a new vehicle. Would make them more compatible with the existing millions of Tesla's out there at SC stations. If not even for the SC compatibility, it would just be more ergonomic for plugging in. You don't have to go around the vehicle.

Any thoughts on the charge port location? Found it odd they went passenger rear side. Other than that, still considering replacing my Model Y with the R2.

The R3 profile reminds me a lot of the Ioniq5. Too bad that they’ve clung onto the hideous front end design. I get that it’s the “family resemblance” but it was a bad idea from the start.

The side view of the R3(X)reminds me a lot of a Golf Mk2 too. I dig it! but 2027 is sooo far off and a lot of intersting reasonably sized evs will be on the marked by then.

@@devenscience8894 And with the J3400 plug I presume it'll matter even less, as the plug itself is easier to handle. Even so, I sure wish someone - automakers, charge networks, the government, I don't know who would actually be able to make this happen - could figure out how to _standardize_ where the charge plug goes. It's always been ridiculous that gasoline vehicles are fueled _either from the left or from the right_ and you have to look at the little arrow on your fuel gauge to decide which way to pull into the station.¹ EVs don't have to keep this same confusion! They could just all put it in the same place! ¹Or at least I have to check. I don't own a car, so every time I fill up, it's someone else's car (usually a rental).

It was confirmed in the MKBHD video that RJ was misleading, not all R2s will have more than 300 miles of range. The $45k variant, small pack RWD, will only have ~270 miles.

The fact that a 475cm vehicle is being sold as "small" speaks a lot about the madness of car industry. Looking forward to the R3 (it resembles the Renault 5/Le Car too) hoping that proper battery packaging will allow to go back in time w.r.t. the ratio of internal useful volume vs. external size. PS no need to convert range from miles to km. 1.6 is exactly the conversion factor you need to factor in charging limits, highway and cold weather consumption increases and seller hype.

Indeed, I wish auto journalists would stop leaving too many significant figures in their unit conversions. Especially for a car that still 2+ years away - a projected 300-mile range is not "482.8 km", it's "around 480 km". But, y'know, when that's the kind of stuff I can complain about, I guess I'm living a pretty sweet life.
