Rivian R2 and R3/X Conversation with RJ Scaringe after launch, new details

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Rivian gave us a quick 15 minutes with CEO RJ Scaringe to talk about the R2 and R3. Believe me, we took full advantage of that time to ask the pressing questions you told us you had in our watch party and many others. Some of his answers are the first we’ve heard on the matter.

    Great pointed questions about todays newly announced platform and vehicles, as well as the implications on their business as they continue to push towards their eventual releases in the next +2 years... Also, hearing RJ share his team's desire to launch the R3 instead of the R2 first fills me with pangs of anguish for them, as I fear their ability to navigate the next 2 years given their finances coming out of Q4 '23 + current rate of burn + the challenges of selling a more expensive offering (when the have a more economical offering) in a difficult macro financial environment + the state of EVs/auto industry in general. Can't help but feel it's a little shortsighted... 🤷🏽‍♂️ Either way, I'm pulling for them, and really hope they make it over the next 2 years to launch the R3, as THAT'S the car I'd personally buy. 🤞🏼

    Good interview Seth, thanks for getting some additional details that all the other KZread interviews don’t bother with because they have a limited understanding of EVs. Regarding the right rear charge port placement, you could have pressed RJ on this more, because while it appears the R2 will work with Tesla V3 Superchargers, I doubt it will work with earlier versions and there are thousands of those pedestals in North America (I’ve Supercharged hundreds of times over the past 10 years). So that is an issue, though over time I think Tesla will relplace the V1 and V2 pedestals. All that said, I have an R2 reservation and am cautiously optimistic that Rivian will survive and prosper. RJ is a proper CEO and inspiring leader, in contrast to, you know, the other guy.

    RJ and Frank, please provide some RWD trims at launch. I really cannot afford anything more than 45k and I am not waiting for R3. I am a 2021 & 2023 R1T quad owner through my parents (who have an EEAP vehicle as well). I am 23 year old college graduate that is currently employed by Rivian and living at home temporarily. My configuration will be RWD. I understand that the more expensive ones (Dual + Tri) need to be prioritized for profit reasons. But RWD will be easier/quicker to manufacture. Also a lot of the markets that you will be successful in (especially in the beginning) are warm/non snow states. Those regions will be configuring RWD more and if the goal is to get as many in the market as possible, then maybe RWD should also get some prioritization too.

    His comments re R1 getting HV changes first almost makes me wonder if the shutdown this spring is going to switch to 800v. That would be pretty huge for R1 as a road trip potential.

  • @CHunter415

    @CHunter415

    I’ve been thinking it makes the most sense for the April shut down to be a switch to 800v architecture. Rivian has talked about reduction in wiring and ECUs coming out of that shut down, and that plays right into the hands of 800v (less heat/less weight). Given Rivian is focused on conserving costs it would only make sense for those changes to be in April. We’ve been waiting to place an order for an R1S until this upcoming refresh happens, once it’s confirmed we’ll be placing an order.

    @@johndavis7257I think 800v doesn't matter that much today. It's a negative for charging today bc you can't charge fast on 400v typical chargers as some 800v car owners have faced. I just want Rivian to cut costs and thrive. Lower weight from higher voltage is great but it's more of a future benefit. If they go 800v would they have that extra charging hardware that some 800v cars have today for practical 400v charging? Bidirectional and 240v outlet are immediately useful.

Whether they deliver or not is still at least another 2 years out (which is very concerning as to who is going to fund them for that many more billions in cash burn). Really would love to buy one of these so I hope they figure out how to get this out much soon. Especially as this will just further slow R1 purchases as a percentage of these buyers will wait.

    Why didn’t you press him more on the location of the charge port? The follow up should have pointed out that the location on the back right-hand side would force Rivian owners to take up two charge spots at a time at older Tesla superchargers. I get that it’s fine for the latest generation with its longer cables, but why would they limit the total number of superchargers that Rivian owners could easily access while not exacerbating congestion at superchargers? I hope this gets fixed before production. Putting it on the back left-hand side like the Volvo EX 30 does is the best way to go.

    The reasoning to the charge port still seems non-merrited point. If it was a design decision to save money then the best move would of been to integrate into the rear lightbar / wrap around light on the R2 / designed the r3 with the port integration into part of the vehicle. Instead they pushed the cost forward into body / body and white / fit and finish with a separate piece. First principles. The port could of been placed on rear driver or front passenger and still been usable on RAN / which I've driven my Tesla and seen how it works on my personal car and its usable on all there site lay outs. These decisions and explanations just seem to squash his thoughts vs. them doing it to spite the external sources. They have very little charging infrastructure installed (go look at the RAN map today, and with them adapting NACS and using Tesla the reasoning is just non-sense). Then I have a suspect that they will end up with 4680 cells on final production. BMW / GM are committing to this format and will have MASS supply available in the near future. These one off 4695 cells would seem to add demand/production overhead and cost to there idea. Yet again - trying there best to position itself from it being "compared" to Tesla vs. just placing themselves on the other end of "saving costs" and running with what other industry sources will be using. Aside this my reply - I did reserve r2 - I'm very excited for this vehicle and long stock holder for the company so I'm defiantly cheering them on!

  • @ludwigbear

    It's a pity the NACS port is on the wrong side for basically every Tesla supercharger in current operation. I get that having the port on the passenger side is good for reaching chargers when street parking but how much extra cost would it really have added to move the port to the front passenger side - best of all worlds? So low too! Will also be a pain to have to practically kneel down on the ground to reach the port!

    I have really liked Rivian and their vehicles. But placing the new charge port at the rear right after knowing they're joining the Tesla network is dumbfounding. They had 2 proper choices -- the rear left, or better still, the front right. And they've missed both times -- first with the front left and now with the rear right. I'm totally speechless. How can such a supposedly smart man as RJ, and supposedly smart engineers at Rivian compare their installed 500 total stalls of the Rivian adventure network with the 25,000 Tesla V3 stalls and the over 15,000 opened to Rivian and other EVs? "It's a cost decision?" Really? If you have it at the rear right, what cost difference would there be to place it at the rear left? They're placing their tiny network, which will most surely be placed on hold as a cost savings, over the easy of use and abundant charging choices for their customers with the Supercharger network. Isn't it a lot cheaper to just move the parking lines on those existing 500 adventure network stalls to accommodate the current R1 owners over inconveniencing a possible several hundred thousand of their customers? Perhaps I've been giving Rivian and RJ entirely too much credit. We were seriously not only thinking of purchasing an R2, but also investing a little in Rivian. But no way in hell will either of those happen with this type of thinking. I can clearly see now why they're struggling. They'll never make it with this type of logic. And the pause on the Georgia plant is very alarming.
