Riverflow Fugue (better sound) | Original Composition in D-Minor

Музыка

Noteworthy features of this fugue:
→ the countersubject is continuously alternating between scale degree 1 and another scale degree, one note lower each time (all of them quarter notes)
→ this pattern is repeated in diminution at 1:00 to lead to the next episode
→ the stretto entry at 2:03 does not start on scale degree 2 (as this subject usually does), but on 4; the same thing happens at 2:10, only that it modulates to v in the course of the entry

I'm kind new to fugue and music in general, but you're definitely the most impressive fugue writer I have seen. Not only is your style very original, having very unique ideas and motifs, it is also very well structurated and developed. So, if you will, I'd like to ask you how do you come up with your thematic material? Like, do you just come up with a melody and see whatever counterpoint goes well with it? Or do you think both at the same time, like, making one for another? When I try to do the first way, It usually ends up becoming a melody that I have no idea what to do with, how to do a characteristic enough counter melody, and how to develop it.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it a lot! (= That’s a great question. Most of the time, a melody arises on its own and gets stuck in my head, which is when I start experimenting. It usually doesn’t work well right away as a fugue subject and I have to adjust it, sometimes to a point that it’s no longer recognisable as what it started out as. However, sometimes, I’m lucky and the countersubject and everything else falls into place without any need to deviate from the first idea. I also often actively try to come up with a subject when I’m impatient to get composing again, which seldom yields good results, even though I consciously make the subject counterpoint-friendly. You can’t force these things. But once in a while, something decent arises from this method as well. And for every fugue I manage to finish, I have half a dozen failed attempts lying around: snippets of melodies, different versions of a subject that all don’t work, subjects followed by an answer and a no good countersubject, and even complete expositions that I didn’t have inspiration enough to follow through on. That’s obviously only my personal experience, others might have completely different approaches. Thank you for the question! ^^

Se non le piacciono le mie fughe, perché le ascolta e le commenta? Sembra una perdita di tempo per te.
