The first time I heard this song (sometime in the 90s) it was a version done by Robert Downey Junior ;). I had no idea this was a Joni Mitchell song until today.

Sometimes you come across a rendition of a well known and well covered song that just soars above all the others. This is just so beautiful and achingly melancholy. Absolutely sublime. You completely owned this and it touched my soul. Perfect in every way.

I’ve heard so many renditions of River that can’t quite capture its melancholy and haunting melody. Honestly, this is one of best covers of this incredibly difficult song I’ve heard yet! You nailed it and yet still made it your own! Just beautiful! I hope Joni Mitchell hears it…you would make her proud!

Amen. Covering Joni takes sand for sure. This song has 1.2 million views... Not nearly enough in my opinion. This is what KZread is still good for. Turn on the radio and hear the same pop songs over and over again until you lose all interest. It warms my heart there are voices with passion like this out in the world. This is enough to replace the faith you're missing. You hear her voice and it makes you feel. Haunting my heart waves in the best sort of way.

I am so sorry to hear that you are suffering from severe anxiety attcks. I never experienced one but im sure it must be very bad !! try to relax and cut down whatever is that making you feel so anxious !!

Sophie... It's hard... but there is a way out of it... Therapy and medication help in crisis moments, but re-significate life is the best way... Meditation helped me to find peace with my anxious thoughts instead of keeping the battle to get rid of them. If you want to try, start it slow, with short exercises on focus on your breath, let the thoughts come and go, but use the breath as an anchor to reality. Breathing is a way to get out of the anxiety attack as well - by closing your eyes and isolating yourself from the rush of feelings, just breathing in through the nose, and out through the mouth, slowly and trying to feel all the movement of the air get in and slowly getting out. I hope you can be ok soon.

Oh Sierra, it was truly beautiful. I am 68 years old and your rendering is more moving to me than the original was…back in the day. I wish I could purchase your version.💕

I'm in a dark place in my life right now and just discovered Sierra and Chase's music today. The fact that I can so deeply enjoy this song gives me hope. Thank you.

Listen to 'You're Gonna Be Okay' by Brian&Jenn Johnson and to 'Better Days' by Peter Murray. Two songs that touched me in dark night & so much other music. Music is powerful remedy for our Soul. I'm really familiar with dark nights. Dont give up & don't give in, stay the course, believe in you, believe in Life, is more Profoundly Intimate with us than we may know when we are in the dark. Sun still shines above clouds, it will pass. Is easier if you are not at odds with Presence of Within. Ask in your Innermost Depths for help, in the Stillness of Silence is Presence. There are some things that are just too Beautiful , that you almost feel like you are cheating " The Game " when you take them in . A Beautiful Sunrise coming over the Mountain , A Sun settling down to sleep into the Ocean ; The first flakes of freshly fallen Snow on a Winters Morning , the Sound of the Silence in the Woods , And the Voice of this Songbird on your Soul ......

Still my all time favorite by Joni and you, Sierra. One and the same. ❤

You conveyed a sense of melancholia that even Joni herself didn't capture in the original. I liked the key you did this in, and the tempo was very fitting. Darker, heavier - you let the song breathe more, I think. Great job.

While I can't disagree with your comment (Sierra did a stunning cover), I'd like to point out a few things. One, Joni was in her 20's when she wrote and released this song. Two, even Joni interprets her own songs differently than when she was young. It seems to me that she penned and performed many songs that she would grow into, make more space for. A great example is the difference in how "Both Sides Now" was performed in her young years and how she performed it decades later: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn-Ftc6BXa-yhLQ.html. The living of life deepens everything for each of us. Joni has been my favorite artist, bar none, for 50 years now. While I have always loved her music, her art, I have a much deeper understanding of it all now that I've lived more life.

Sierra singing Joni Mitchell songs is one of the great joys of life.

The tone she sings the word 'sky' in, sounds like Joni, a tone my heart wants to cry out nonstop forever, one long river sounding through time from the heart of humanity 💗

The Voice!!!!!! God this lady sings like an angle, her voice cuts through me like a knife and lets me travel to someplace I've never been before. It's almost too haunting, I'm at a loss for words.

Yeah, I really love the cover Ben Platt made as well. But yeah, this is a gorgeous cover as well. This one is more emotional and Ben's version is a bit more theatrical.

I have heard this version of this song by Sierra over two dozen times in the past year. I just can’t get tired of it.

Lifelong fan of Joni here (I am over 70 now) and I don't get to hear much in the way of covers of her music, especially from 'Blue' which was her standout confessional album. I have listened to your cover version of 'River' several times now and at first I thought this is not Joni. You sing in a lower register but you really brought a lovely sensitive rendition to this party. I think that Joni would be delighted to hear your version, which I found both musically accomplished and very respectful of Joni. Thank you for reminding me of how great Joni's work was back then. I wish you great success as an artist.

Memories of needing daily doses of Joni Mitchell’s album „Blue“. It is one of the joys of music, whether through the medium of the singer-songwriter or a cover singer that a song takes on a new colour and creates other sensations as it emerges. Thank you for the beauty of what you have brought here.
