Risky Dice Trays
Ойын-сауық
Dice trays with some style and risk.
Who else likes to play board games? I know I do. It's always a good time spent with family and friends.
I used Sapele and Black Walnut wood, a variety of tools to include a laser engraver, the new Wedge Pro, a table saw, bandsaw, various sanders, and my lathe. So, there's something for everyone in this video.
Please enjoy! I appreciate your time and will look forward to reading your comments!

Even something 'not precious' as these trays were made with care and flair. And flare! How that wood flashed and shimmered as the tray turned. Lovely.

Very nice. Great wood selection. I like that you left the upper portion of the rim unturned. Very good finish. Altogether an excellent project. However you should have thrown the dice before you ended. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Rod, Every time you put out a piece, the art world loses. The artist spreads his wealth for the rest of us to enjoy. I think it is a very one sided deal, but since I am on the winning side of the game I shall fail to complain. Many thanks for another goody, Rod. Keep the aspidistra flying! Semper fi God bless, Paul

Hi Rod, We used to play Risk as a family of 5 when I was quite young. I still have the game in fact. The dice tray look great and I really like the angled rim and interior and the round edge to the base. It makes the eyes look over the piece. Great video as ever my friend. Take care Rod. Cheers, Huw

That’s really nifty, and beautiful. Now to make some coasters? And a set with green felt, like a pool table? Or a billiards table, with turned sticks? Or a set that looks like a mini football field? I could think of more, so you’ll have plenty to do this winter!😂

Nicely done. The only issue with not turning the inside is the glue joint between the sides and bottom. Then again that could be taken care of before the glue dried completely. But it is a dice bowl to “used and abused.” I really like the concept and the actual project. Well done my friend.

I like the looks of those clamps. Why do you not like them.
@RHumphrey
9 ай бұрын
I bought six of them (not cheap) and every one has now broken with no more than hand clamping pressure. I have way less expensive Harbor Freight clamps that have never let me down. Avoid Bora clamps... all hype, no quality. This is my personal experience. To make matters worse, I took them back to the Woodcraft store where I purchased the clamps, and they refused to replace them.

Rod, you know I'm a big fan of your work (and you have commented privately on some of my pieces), but I have to ask something. I'm only part way through the video, at the part where you're hand sanding. So, why wouldn't you have sanded the piece while it was still one long stick? That seems like it would have been much faster and easier. Then you would only have to touch up the joints. OK, finished the video and my thought still holds, at least for the inside. and, since you switch between each cut, that means sanding both sides before you cut it. Also, it's great to see you do a piece that is intended to be used (and probably abused in a heated game) rather than a "piece of art" to be stuck on a shelf. Sometimes what is needed is functionality. The piece still looks good but that's a side benefit, second to usefulness. A great gift. You're such fun to watch and I bet would be a guy who would be great to spend an afternoon on the porch with, shooting the breeze.
@RHumphrey

The sanding was a deliberate choice. I talked about it in the video, a bit. I want to slow things down and enjoy the process. I want the process to mean more than just an end product. Yep, sanding prior would have been easier, but for me personally, at least right now, not the right choice... In the process lies the therapy, through the process the end product is more rewarding. To put in another way, the destination isn't as important as the journey. Thanks, Rob (I still like using my tools though, lol)
