The renovation industry in Singapore is pretty unregulated. Check out the number of increasing negative reviews on Hometrust. It is disheartening to see many homeowners putting in tens of thousands to built their dream home and yet get the short end of it.

The cheap contractor might not even know what formaldehyde is. Best to stay away from cheap fake wood and cheap contractors and just use real solid wood or buy from ikea.

Now I know the smell and stinging sensation I have when I moved in earlier this year. My ID did not explain to me the type of materials and chemicals they were going to use. Most of the time it is not the home owners that are trying to save on costs, rather it is the ID and contractors trying to increase their profit margins while giving inferior quality. This is all lacking regulations.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any regulation or enforcement in using certified and tested materials. Just check the number of negative reviews on Hometrust which homeowners has been increasing complaining.

What bonding chem were used?

I've always felt the stinging sensation whenever I go into new homes. Occasionally, drawers also triggered the stinging sensation for me. I always knew it's some kind of gasses but unsure what's that until this video. My family members always say I'm overly sensitive & I'm glad that this video has proven I'm right!

You are definitely not imagining the stinging sensation. Formaldehyde is real (its odourless too) and it does have long term health effects. We have been getting increasing numbers of homeowners who are complaining about it Hometrust.

Surprised that SG monitors the chemicals that goes into food, but do not monitor the types of chemicals used in paints and wood treatment. Same problem in US and elsewhere with paints containing lead were used until recently. You will get the whole list from googling chemicals commonly used in building materials.

I agree we have to standardise regulations to keep Singapore homes safe

I had this problem in Thailand, but didn't know what it was until this segment. One more thing to worry about when traveling.

We moved into our house 6 months ago now and even though our kitchen window is always open the cabinets still have strong formaldehyde and regularly airing the drawers haven’t disapated entirely Some people may be more sensitive to it than others too I’m disappointed that our country is not regulating these practices by our contractor As a lay person we wouldn’t know that there’s such issues until Reno is done and we moved in

Contractors cutting corners more often now in the face of rising costs and clients who are even more price-sensitive now. I remember when I was studying for my 2nd diploma years ago that this was not a huge issue then as many contractors were moving away from such low cost solutions.

The problem is the period from reno commencement to moving in is a short 2 to 3 months in SG context while formaldehyde takes at least a good 6 months to dissipate through simple ventilation. And the problem seems to occur quite often in built-in fixtures like wardrobes and cabinets. Perhaps it is better to use non-custom-made furniture that would have been aired sufficiently.

This has been a long overdue concern and issue!! 2024 then surface!! How many people have already inhale that poison into their body system??

Health, Safety and Environment regulations should have been in place decades ago. It is very important for the general health of the population. Good health means more productive workforce.

My ID friends said that many get from Malaysia and China with very tight budget for bigger margins. So, no checks on safety and health issues. Many customers also want cheap and forget about the health hazards issues. 😢😢😢💔💔💔

anyone also can be contractor, definitely choose the cheaper material to get things done. And unfortunately nothing has been done to regulate the renovation industry which every home owner will go through at least once in their lifetime, yet asking people to have more kids where basic things like the well being of our new generation couldnt be taken care of. Keep all windows open and don't use the air conditioner at all for a least one or two weeks depending on the lingering smell of the chemicals.

No wonder carpentry work is so unpopular as workers are being exposed to these chemicals 24/7. We need to start making our own furniture then. What about the paints on the walls of houses & buildings? Arent the chemicals toxic too??

actually if you work in an open ventilated area, you will not notice it that strong. However, once you close up an area like a room with no open ventilation, then you will have those chemical accumulation hence the stinging feeling.

Paints are equally toxic, however it is from another chemical (benzene). Good thing is that benzene dissipates much faster (couple weeks max) while formaldehyde can take up to years. Do check out Hometrust for negative feedback from other homeowners to safeguard your renovation.

Yes paint can have toxic effects as well, there are some paints that are designed to be safer than others.

Almost everything we use has formaldehyde. Most good contractors will open all the windows and help reduce the level. You can use fans to blow on all cabinets for at least a week before moving in.

So, any regulation by the govt in this area? HDB has been building flats with some including built-in cabinets and wardrobes. What are they going to do to ensure such issue is being addressed?

not as easy as you might think. as mentioned it is generally used as binding agent during furniture assembling by the contractors (or DIY), some will use liberally while others use sparsely. Its like asking them to regulate how much salt the cooks put on your cai peng. Do we also talk about outright ban on these chemical? Then who will ultimately bear the cost for using green alternatives?

Unfortunately the interior design and renovation professions in Singapore often doesn't requite official certifications and qualifications. Hope the authorities can regulate better. We recommend checking out Hometrust for negative feedback from other homeowners to safeguard your renovation.

Nail polish also contains formaldehyde.

I moved to Croatia, purchased a wardrobe at a furniture store, took it out of the box in my spare bedroom. Within minutes I had to leave the room. I tried to air out the room for months leaving the window open and an air purifier but it still stinks and gives me an instant headache. I never put the wardrobe together and I am unable to use the room.

We didn’t know about it until our ID informed us. Just need to open all the cabinets to air for a week (with windows opened) and/or put activated charcoal in the cabinets.

Use an air quality monitor and air purifiers. They help monitor and reduce indoor air pollutants.

The problem is there are so many construction firms that don’t know about alternative. When I was renovating my home, the D&B I hired that didn’t understand what the chemical is. They need more training

Singapore doesn't even bother enforcing electrical standards for home renovations, so why should we even discuss air quality standards?

Not surprised, a lot of people want to go for cheap, save costs etc when it comes to renovations. Fittings which are lower in formaldehyde tend to be more expensive. It wouldn’t help if the space isn’t well-ventilated during the renovation process as well

Your ID probably didn'y know about it too since it takes no qualification to be officially certified as an ID. Not saying all IDs are like this, there are reputable ones, but we do see increasing IDs who are not doing the best jobs out there. Good quality materials, especially plywood and the glue to adhere the laminates to the carpentry makes a difference.

solution is dont install cabinetry - dont do built in. buy ala carte. think out of the box

Many of the fixtures and cabinets are produced and manufactured in their Malaysia factory before transporting it over to Singapore. Even though the ID shared with you that it is made on-site in your home before fixing it up, most of the time their tools etc are not purchase locally.

I had eye infection n eczema due to thisx had a few day surgery done. Contractors unfortunately deny responsibilities of using unknown ply wood of low quality

FYI formaldehyde at one time was used to Decaffeinate coffee beans. Now is done with Methylene Chloride, which doesn't sound any better.

this problem we had in sweden 1970. everything is build with chipboards that is glues with glue that contains formaldehyde. so we take it away. for exempel Ikea furniture, have to change also the way they manufacture chipboards in sweden.

Same smell goes for new malls opened recently which Singaporeans flock to upon the announcement of the soft opening even though open tenants are only 30% but food courts and outlets are opened. Waited 3 weeks before visiting Pasir Ris malk but the chemical smell was still coming from many boarded units still under renovation .

Any smell you don't like or make you uncomfortable is formaldehyde now.... Natural woods will emit formaldehyde too, furniture meant for outdoor will use formaldehyde based adhesive, you can't get rid of it completely.

Taobao furniture and accessories. This has always been a PRC toxic new home problem since their open doors. Not surprised that many products have high formaldehyde to help associated companies get business cleaning them. Very much like some countries politicians refusing to improve their waterworks so their family water bottling business continues booming.

the formaldehyde is due to the type of plywood that are used to make the furnitures like counters, cabinets. Those plywood are normally from indonesia that has strong smell which was meant to prevent internal bugs. However, the problem is it takes a long time to air out and made worst with the laminates used to seal the wood. Indonesian plywood are cheaper hence why used by contractors to make custom furniture.

Why aren’t the ones who constructed the interiors not liable for this? Your laws are flawed if they don’t have the accountability for it

My ex company after a major renovation, used to have such smell and caused eye stinging sensation. OK.. so all the employees back then were exposed to danger for that few months.

Majority of the everyday products such as furniture ,toys,mobile phone,computer, display screen etc etc, contain some harmful materials that can be harmful to health over a longer period .but unless u are not living in an enclosed environment your chances of exposing to such harmful products are alway there.take care to minimise your exposure.

These carpentry works are mostly done in Malaysia. Dont go for cheap stuff at the expense of health. THis chemcial can cause cancer

With more buildings are sprunning up the more we are living with toxic and dangerous air when our blocks are building closer to each other. Small island Singapore are getting more dangerous in terms or air we are breathing compared with few decades ago.Don't renovations problem solved, live simpler no need spend tonnes yet no safe of mind, the modern we are the more dangerous we are living with products make with chemical , especially imported we don't know what are used inside their products material. Just blame themselves for spending so much on renovations yet living in danger zone. Everything we consumed are almost imported which are very dangerous especially when unscrupulous manufacturers just want produced cheap and sell at exorbitant price to make big bucks at the expense of human health. That's why our small island are building more health center and hospitals than before, having more health centers are the signs that we are getting weaker and weaker compared to the olden days of villages life.

@@meilishang663 The safest practice: leave the window open, turn on the fans, open all the drawers and cabinet doors, for a few days. Delay your move in. You should plan for it if you are so concerned. The chemicals evaporate eventually.

​@@blackknight4996 Exactly, it can help. Schedule the move in after about 2 to 3 weeks. Get someone to open the windows. Ventilate all day. Use cinnamon or odor absorbing plants or appliances. Clean the house everyday before the movein date.

It’s all true, I have been in the custom cabinet business since 1986. I will not sell and refuse to sell Chinese knockdown cabinets full of formaldehyde. There’s also Sheetrock and other materials with the same problem. Extremely cheap to purchase with a nice profit margin. It’s a major health risk. Your eyes are stinging and watering as it’s being taken off the truck.

My neighbor uses toxic air freshener too. Besides that, he smokes. So there are many things in our surroundings that harm us beyond our control. Just rmb this: anything that’s not found in the natural environment isn’t good for your respiratory system. That includes those incense that ppl burn to chase away mozzies. Those things are harmful to health too. Burning kimzua is bad for the lungs too. Read up on particulate matter 2.5. Anything that’s burnt releases small particulate matter that can get lodged in our lungs.

People, be aware that this chemical is used extensively in furniture originating from JB !!

Those cabinets and make-to-order wardrobes are mostly made in Malaysia or even locally. Such adour is normal unless our government develops a policy to fine such companies. Pocket hurts then these carpenters will learn.

This chemical has been used for decades. Back in the 90's when my parent renovated the flat and furnished the unit with new fixtures, the smell was super strong and we literally slept in for days, sniffing this chemical. Activated charcoal and good ventilation really helps dissipate.

In Singapore these days, the prices are high but the quality downright unacceptable.

The so called expert claiming many components of materials and most dont use formaldehyde。 before any plywood are imported. The importer must sent the plywood for test in Singapore before selling to contractors and IDs. These would then force the singapore importers to conducts checks and discussion with their plywood suppliers in Indonesia and China for examples to comply. Such practices already exist in semiconductor.

Unfortunately the interior design and renovation professions in Singapore often doesn't requite official certifications and qualifications. Hope the authorities can regulate better. We recommend checking out Hometrust for negative feedback from other homeowners to safeguard your renovation.

There is Eco board (usually comes with cert to prove Formaldehyde emission level ) - Formaldehyde free - E0≤0.5mg/L - E1≤1.5mg/L - E2≤5.0mg/L and also glue w/o or very low formaldehyde but definitely more costly. you can ask the ID and carpentry co. how much more to use such material for the carpentry

if you check how the worker install the cupboard and drawer, you will know why this happen. The worker even uses hand to put the glue on the surface, and then adhere the surface layer. Two parts of source: 1 in the polywood 2 high amount from the glue (yellow glue). When you feel eye dry, it is roughly 0.2-0.3, and the case could be 0.6/0.7 in the warm afternoon.

The main sources of formaldehyde in homes are the plywood and adhesives used in carpentry, it can't really be cleaned off. Check our comment to see another homeowner's similar encounter with it too.

Did you know that some shampoos have Formaldehyde as an ingredient?

You can choose to hire professional at approximately $1000 or DIY. For me, I DIY by buying formaldehyde removal spray that is made in japan because I trust their quality. Thankfully i was proven right and i saved over $800 instead of hiring professional to do it as I’m basically paying for their labour just like renovation 😂

Formaldehyde is very bad. Imagine all that leaking into the land, poisoning it where the dead were buried.

Not surprising with the amount of ID tips you see online - just buy cheaply made furniture for cheap in China. Seeing how some Chinese don't care about using gutter oil, not surprised the construction material and furnityre contains formaldehyde.
