    Cornelius from Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1973): "He did not grunt. He articulated. He spoke a word, a word which had been spoken to him time and again without number by humans. He said: 'No'." It took 38 years to finally show this moment on screen.

    I didn't know about the scene and never watched that, but now that I have seen it, it isn't even the same story. The ape they're talking about was called Aldo, not Caesar, and the story indicates that apes evolved by being pet/slaves to humans for 500 years, then revolting, not due to some pandemic virus.

    I think another reason why this scene is so badass is due to that fact that apes are so similar to humans. The biggest thing that separates us from them is speech so seeing an ape shout “NO!” kinda breaks the barrier of us from them so it’s super shocking and surreal.

  • @AbandonedQuiche

    @AbandonedQuiche

    speech is far from what separates us from them. A bunch of animals can say stuff that they hear us saying. The barrier between humans and animals is the ability to philosophy (if a ape can do sign language it's because he's trying getting a reaction he learned he would get from a human if he did said sign. It doesn't mean the ape knows this sign can mean a whole phrase to us.)

  • @jackweber3660

    @jackweber3660

    @@AbandonedQuiche many humans are just as barbaric as apes in a sense that they dont care what actions they perform as long as it benefits them. Philosophy isnt a thing only found in humans either. Many animals have a sense of justice, forgiveness, and have high emotional intelligence. What animals truly lack is the ability to exchange their thoughts with others. That’s what’s allowed us to keep on growing and build a civilization. So in a sense, if animals were able to communicate on the same level as humans, they would be on the same par.

    I think what really makes Caesar saying “no” amazing and jaw dropping is 2 reasons 1.) We are the only animals that can speak, who have a language we can use to communicate and view as us having an intelligent brain, what separates us from the animals in our world. To see that be usurped and even challenged is beyond our imagination. 2.) The word “no”. No is a strong word, it’s a defiant word to a lot of actions we wouldn’t want to do. Caesar saying no symbolized in conjunction with the first reason that no he wont let go, No they are not to be treated horribly, no to being seen as lesser. It’s an amazing scene and probably the best scene in the entire series

    One thing no ones ever bring taking about this scene is the line: "Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!" and yes people know thats a line in the first Planet of the Apes movie, but is the idea behind this.....this in the og was the line that George Taylor, says to the apes that shook them, they never heard a Human talk before and they where shock.....now this line is say before Caesar speaks for the first time.....and he does with a NO......now he an APE silence a Human who can't believe an ape talk back to him, is in my opinion one of the best uses of both fanservice and a reversal I have ever seen in any film ever.

    I always admired how Caesar never wanted to kill the humans in this trilogy, rather just break free from their rule. I never saw it as him being weak, but as Caesar actually being the bigger individual. Caesar was a great leader because he kept his eye on the actual goal, which was for his kind to be free from human rule. He only killed when it was absolutely necessary and he always did his best to not make things personal. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when Caesar and the other apes rencountered the humans he even tried to make peace with them rather than go to war, because he knew how devastating war could be for both the humans and the apes. A wise leader always searches for peace if it is possible rather than solve problems through violence. Caesar didn’t force the apes to hate the human race, he didn’t ask them to kill every single one of them (like Koba), he just thought about what was best for his kind. Caesar knew in order to be a higher species you must be better than the ones who abused you. I saw the trailer for the 4th movie and I’m so hyped for it! Tho it seems some apes have learned nothing from the humans and are beginning to act just like they did after becoming the dominant species. Hopefully this knew character (who I believe is named Noa) will take after him and follow in his footsteps.

    This scene was so well placed. I'd go so far as to say one of the best cinematic moments of the decade. They had the audience engaged in an action scene, and built the movie up in such a way that they could completely forget that the apes eventually talk. Then they throw a little reference at us so we all feel a little distracted and then Caesar shouts. All this build up so we wouldn't see it coming from a mile away. Then It happens and they drop all sound so we realize the importance of what we just saw. We get a moment to take it all back then right back into finishing the fight and getting us super hyped and excited for what comes next. I'm not even fond of the original Planet of the Apes. But this scene hit me like a ton of bricks.

    As far as I’m concerned this is one of the greatest movie moments of all time. It’s perfect. The entire movie’s been building to it, with every step Caesar takes in his intellect, every humiliation he suffers, every act of rebellion. That one word has so much power. And having it be a response to the classic line was a perfect touch.
