I agree, the movie is amazing and with enough story plot from the books it's based on (though I haven't read the books yet) it is worthy of a sequel, a third movie and a series with several seasons. Also does anyone wonder what happened in the blizzard of 68 between Bunny and Jack?

@@suenicole8979 I think Jack probably caused a snowstorm at which cancelling Easter and the large stacks of snow covered every egg that was planted.

I wish this was more popular than it was. Truly a masterpiece of a Christmas animated movie. I love the attention to detail like for instance Jack's old brown cloak was so fluid and they even one-upped it and added light blue shimmers that changes according to how the cloak moves? Even the storyline was good. I'm glad you guys watched it!!

@@skiesc1606 Well, yeah. That's when the theaters are packed all week, every week. If you wanted your movie to do well, you'd release it around Christmas/end of the year, instead of Easter, too. Marketing strategy has nothing to do with whether the movie is a Christmas movie or an Easter movie or neither. Besides, marketing sucked for this movie regardless. I wouldn't be surprised if they saw Jack, Santa and all the snow and thought, "It must be a Christmas movie". When, in reality, it's an end-of-winter-beginning-of-spring movie, which is more commonly associated with Easter. (Rebirth and new life. Harolding the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring.) Not only does the main story take place during Easter, but Jack even has a three second flashback of Easter, right before cutting to the ice skating scene, where the ice is melting because they're on the cusp of spring. Jack and Bunny also have the most symbiotic, character building interactions of all the characters. (Santa gets to act as a mentor, but he doesn't really grow from his interactions with Jack as Bunny does.) The movie is about belief and the power of having fun, but also about hope and rebirth. (Jack is literally reborn.) I get that this is sort of an "any holiday" sort of movie. (Lord knows I watched it every single day back when it first came out...) But, regardless of the bias you have towards associating snow with Christmas, and this movie happening to come out during the end of year holidays instead of the beginning of the year holidays, you can't deny that this is more of an Easter movie than it is any other holiday's movie. Other than Santa being in the movie, having the North Pole as a set piece and the sleigh as a form of transportation, this movie has nothing to do with Christmas as a holiday. But that's just my two cents on the matter. Sorry this got so long. I tend to rant.

So sad this movie bombed, it's one of my favourite non-Disney animated film (along the likes of The Secret Of Nihm, Fire And Ice, The Iron Giant, the How To Train Your Dragons saga, Akira or Steam Boy...).

Me too. I discovered Jack frost thanks to this movie because I don't think he's mentionned in France where I live. It was also funny to discover the others representations of some guardians

FYI that amazing frost design Jack Frost has is based on real window frost, aka fern frost. We don't see it so much nowadays but before double-glazing became so prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere it was pretty common and in folklore was often associated with Jack Frost, who was said to have brought it with him as he passed by.

That happened to our old windows when we were children. (I live in Austria and we grew up in a building that was build around 1900. They were double windows but very old too and back then our flat was heated with stoves).

Sad little moment. When Jack first appears in the village at the beginning of the movie, You can see his sister in the background talking to someone. She is also very likely related to Jaime and Sophie

I personally find the Santa in this movie to be my favorite out of all the Christmas movies I have watched. I love that they gave him more depth and is an actual character instead of the same old Saint nick

I know this reply is REALLY late, but one of my favorite depictions of Santa is from an old book called "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" by L. Frank Baum. There IS an animated movie made for it, but it doesn't do the book any true justice. I believe it's worth a look.

@@anokartist2352 I think art of it was because some people were throwing a fit at the time because "North" had tattoos, and for some traditional thinkers those are marks of pure evil. It was really stupid.

Jack had two sisters, one blonde, one brunette and a brunette little brother. I think Jamie is a descendant of Jack, via one of his siblings, perhaps the one he saved or the blonde sister in particular. I think that's why Sophie has blonde hair but Jamie had brown hair. So Jack is probably his great uncle or something!

The only reason Dreamwork failed Rise of the Guardians is because of their bad marketing team. They advertise it like it’s another typical kids movie when it has some really serious moments with lots of depth. Now they just completely pretend that the movie doesn’t exist! You can really tell how bad their marketing is by just comparing Dreamworks’ vs Disney’s Animation Instagram accounts. Dreamworks’ account feels like a kids tv show whereas Disney Animation shows a lot of behind the scenes of concept art and animation and markets toward all ages.

Paramount were mainly responsible for the promotion and distribution. Here in the UK it was really badly promoted- most people never heard about it. I don't remember seeing any adverts and there was nothing in the shops. DW cut their ties with Paramount after this.

I love the detail of the mouse collecting teeth. In France we don’t have a tooth fairy we have a tooth mouse. I once lost a tooth eating cheese and was sure I’d get a bonus coin for the mouse snack.

When I was that age back in the 80s we didn't have any tooth collecting spirit at all that became common in the 90s I think because some realtives of mine a little younger then me had a toothfairy (I am from Austria/Tyrol). Also our gifts at christmas didn't come from Santa Claus or Father Christmas but by Baby Jesus himself and his angles (Father Christmas was known as well though and later sort of replaced by Santa/ became more populare because of him.) So in my childhood the most popular among those four spirits were the easter bunny andthe espcially Sandmann. There are lullabys that mention him and a German Writer even wrote a horror novel called "The Sandmann" and a lot of children still go to bed with a TV-program called the Sandmann. I even invented my own storys about Sandmann. -Oh and we have our own bogeyman called the "Black Man" in orther regionshere it is the "Habergeiß" (literaly Oatgoat in english) but they don't hide under beds. Children were told to well behave or not to go to certain places/ out alone outherwise the "Black Man"/"Habergeiß" would get them. (Our parents never used this nerrative.) Some children are scared about monsters hiding under beds but I don't remember whether we used that narrative. -We don't have any spirit like Jack Frost and I didn't know of him untill I saw the movie.

There's a series of books written by William Joyce which tells the backstories of each guardian and I recommend so much! You'll discover even Pitch's backstory, they're all so cool and magical! Thanks for this great reaction!

I agree, if anything the movie deserves a sequel and its own series. The animation is amazing and the story plot is great. I've seen people react to it now and love it more so I can't understand why it's not acknowledged more. Also I really wanna know what happened in the blizzard of 68 between Bunny and Jack

Jack Frost was always actually seen as a trickster spirit, always mischievous and whatnot. I do like how they portrayed him in this movie.

“Finally someone who knows how to have a little fun” I’ve watched this movie a thousand times as a kid and this is the first time I’ve caught on to that. Even pitch notices jacks center through the way he fights. It still makes me sad that this movie somehow flopped with its release but at least now we have a bunch of people reacting to it on KZread. I’ve seen a good handful of people reacting to this film just this year :D

I love that you guys appreciated the artistry of this movie. Despite the outdated animation, I really think the visuals here are gorgeous. The directing and characterizations are also insane, definitely some of the best when it comes to kid films. The movie came out when I was 11 and I can’t even begin to explain how inspiring it was for me growing up. I think this is what made me first start wanting to work for DreamWorks Animation (along with How to Train Your Dragon), which is still to this day my dream job.

I always found Pitch to be a very interesting character, and he has so much history in the books that I feel like they did him kinda dirty in the movie design/motive wise. He’s can actually be considered very tame compared to book Pitch. Another interesting thing to note in regards to movie a Pitch only, if the Guardians are constantly trying to stop Him from activity doing his job, this entire movie is all their fault. If he wasn’t such a central spirit, fear is super important, and he worked on the same belief system as the Guardians, he would be gone. It’s the equivalent of living on scraps and watching another feast every single day. He got too desperate for “Food”.

22:29 The Easter tragedy wasn't Jack's fault. Pitch was trying to make the guardians turn against Jack.

I agree, but there is reason behind them blaming him. Just after Sandy died, Jack showed incredible power against Pitch. He's strong, even without a single believer across the entire planet. And his powers are notably effective against Pitch's nightmares. Had he been in the tunnels, some of the eggs would've made it through. Instead, he was elsewhere with nothing to show for it. He lost Baby Tooth and gained his teeth (and the only way he could've gotten the teeth is by going where Pitch was). All that said, yeah, it still wasn't his fault. He was lured by Pitch. He had no way of knowing what Pitch was doing. Bunny was quick to blame Jack because he already had a grudge against Jack. The other two followed suit because of his fighting prowess, Baby Tooth, and the teeth.

The lore, or the books, this movie is loosely based on is also so good. I'm going to collect those stories one day. Pitch's backstory is quite tragic.

I just love how Jack uses the wind to fly. Also, by far, my favorite Santa ever!

The books are super epic and gave a sad origin to Pitch. His name was Kozmotis Pitchiner and he was once a general of the emperor's armies (the emperor was in charge of a large portion of outer space, but I can't remember what he was called. There was no specific planet or world that he and his wife ruled from). He was tasked with guarding the Dream Pirates (I think they were called? I forget, but they are the dark, demonic creatures that you see in this film) who were captured and locked away. They kept mimicking his daughter's voice, making it sound as though she was in danger and needed him to rescue her. Over time, I guess his resolve weakened until, one day, he faltered and let loose the Dream Pirates, who possessed him. He forever became known as Pitch Black, the Boogyman. But there was always a part of him yearning to reunite with his daughter, demonstrating that he still struggled with the human side of him. Pitch was feared throughout the universe and even led the charge against the emperor. It was Nightlight (who canonically becomes Jack Frost later) who stopped him from killing the young prince (who would later find refuge on the moon, and grew up to become the Man on the Moon) by trapping himself with Pitch in a cave on Earth for thousands of years. Pitch was awakened again in the present day when a curious moonbeam (sent from Man on the Moon to watch over the children of Earth) strayed too close to him. ' I could go on and on, but the books are so good! Every book focuses on an individual member of the Guardians. Jack is in the final one!

this movie was made so well its underrated

There is so much to love about this movie. From the animation, to the story, to the acting, to the little details. I still love it and watch it around the Holidays, even though this is really an Easter movie, and not a Christmas movie. I hope they will do a sequel someday, and it would be great if they brought the little boy, Jamie back. He would be a great Guardian, with his center being Courage. One of my favorite little bits is at the end. When the Tooth Fairy tosses Pitch a coin before punching him. Since her contract with children is that if you leave her a tooth, she gives you money. Well, apparently, it works in reverse. Since Pitch caught and kept the quarter, she was entitled to one of his teeth.

Dude, I actually have a fanfiction idea in mind (nothing written yet) about Jamie's own journey in becoming a Guardian himself (inspired by an unfinished fic where Jamie becomes a winter spirit, -courtesy of Jack and MiM- after being in a near-fatal car accident) !!! I always thought that his Center would be Belief, though...

This is such a beautiful, underrated gem and I'm so glad more people are watching it! Thank you for your reactions! I wish we can get more from this movie, like a sequel or a TV show, because I want to see more of these characters!

I agree, there is so much of the story that we haven't seen yet and lots of questions to be answered like: 1. What happened in the blizzard of 68 between the Easter Bunny and Jack Frost? 2. Why doesn't the Easter Bunny like the groundhog? I would also like to see other characters like the Groundhog, Leprechaun and others as well as see the past lives of the other guardians and what Jack had been up to during the 300 years before he became a guardian.

I have loved this movie ever since I saw the first trailer for it YEARS ago. It just has such style and imagination, and I just wish that it was far more popular, because there is so much potential for a sequel. Plus this is all based on a series of Childrens books by an author named William Joyce, who is also the writer of a whole bunch of films, such as Toy Story, Robots and of course this film. As far as the Man in the Moon, he's a tiny old man who rides on a giant lunar moth.

There's a theory that Jamie is a descendant of Jack's. If you look closely, Jamie looks similar to Jack's sister that he saved. I like this theory & it explains why Jack js attached to him & Michigan as its possibly what his old town turned into.

I really like this movie. The concept is simple and sweet but the voice acting and visuals really put it over the top. Jude law as Pitch is a scene stealer for me :)

Another movie with stunning animation is Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. To this day it stands up next to the animation of today, I would even say it’s probably one of the best cgi animations of all time

I love this movie. Every time, I watch it I feel like a kid again and can't help smiling. The characters designs, story telling, animation and voice acting are all amazing, plus the dialogue between the characters feel natural and not forced to me. I truly wish this movie is more popular, or recognized. I bought the books which the movie was based off of. It's a classic to watch for Christmas.

The fun thing about Jack is that he was the man in the moons bodyguard when he was a baby being! He just don’t remember as he has changed form since then. And that’s why Jack is so crazy strong, he was one of the strongest beings in the universe but he stepped down and became human and then later Jack Frost. So he still got power, he just don’t know how to reach it.

I absolutely love this movie, I've never really quite seen another one like it.

I can't believe how many reactors don't know Jack Frost. Maybe you have to have grown up in a cold climate. If you live where it gets below freezing at night, frost forms on the windows in patterns like the ones they show here. And kids' parents tell them Jack Frost drew the patterns.

I freaking adored this movie- the only thing I have to argue about is the message of the movie- i mean it wasn't bad but in the grand scheme of things you have to agree that fear is a fundamental part of all living things. Its what keeps us safe. But I understand the negativity behind it- its a double edged sword.

I first saw this movie when it was in theatres with people I just became friends with in University. We all loved it and talked about it for weeks, we each chose a guardian to represent us as profile pics on facebook. I was Tooth Fairy. It really connected us and is one of my favourite memories of that time.

The definition of an underrated movie!

I remember watching this while I was in middle school. The theater was full middle school students and teachers and I loved it. I will say tho those teachers did a good job on how every seat was full of students and only one acted up and everything was fine afterwards.

Took me a while after this movie premiered to remember that when you believe in something, you end up thinking/dreaming about it all the time 😆. That’s what makes Sandman the only logical target. Wonder what all the other non-guardian creatures were doing during this.

You guys have no idea how MAD i was as i watched this movie as a kid and waited for years for a sequel to come...is so sad that this is one of those movies that didn't hit that big enough when it came out to guarantee an franchise,but as time went over it became a classic animated movie Gives me a little bit of hope that the director said that he would love to make another one (the director is Peter Ramsey,the same from Spiderverse)

If you want to see the Man In The Moon, there is a GORGEOUS picture book by William Joyce, who created these characters. =)

I think this movie deserves to be revisited by the studio with the time and budget it deserves they can make this a really big deal especially in a live action adaptation

So glad you watched this movie! It's one of my favorites. One of the favorite poems I wrote in high school English class was about Jack Frost (before I ever watched this movie). There was a man called Jack Frost, Who could never find his way, and always was lost. So he wandered the streets Making maps by the feet Of children who twisted and tossed.

It's such a shame that this movie didn't get the attention it deserved when it was in theaters. If it had, there would have been a sequel, because there was plenty of material for it. Unfortunately, it wasn't until after it was on broadcast television that people really started to see it and appreciate it for the adventurous rollicking good fun movie that it is, and how beautifully it was animated. It's so well-written, and the characters are so fully defined...this is my favorite movie for Christmas, AND for Easter (the holiday the movie is set in).

Omg! I'm so glad you reacted to this movie, it's literally my favorite DreamWorks film and it's such an underrated gem! This movie actually takes place during the Spring season but because the movie contains Jack Frost and Santa Claus, most people think it's a Christmas film. But its still a great film for the Christmas/Winter holiday season anyways! Jack Frost is actually the most powerful Guardian besides the Sandman. That's why they needed him to beat Pitch Black because although Sandman is powerful and the bringer of good dreams, Sandmam and Pitch Black are 2 different sides of the same inverted coin since Pitch is the bringer of nightmares and will never truly disappear since fear & darkness can always be present. Jack Frost is an elemental bringer of Winter, and the guardian of Fun, which is essential for nature and childhood. So he doesn't necessarily need to be believed in, in order for him to maintain his power just as Pitch and Sandman. Fun Fact: Many fans, myself included, ship Jack Frost with Queen Elsa from the Frozen films! Disney jokes about/encourages the ship in a scene in Wreck - It Ralph 2.

I’m not sure how canon the film is to the books but I can’t help but feel kinda bad for Pitch in the film lol. Dude was alone for years and I can see how that would cause him to grow spiteful and bitter. I can’t help but feel like Pitch’s original purpose was to represent maturity and in how fear is one of the driving forces in that process. When people are young they’re full of wonder, hope, dreams, and aspirations for having fun but overtime all of those feelings mature as kids slowly lose their innocence and gain perspective and experience. Fear has a lot to do with that transition. A little bit of fear is necessary in growing up because it causes us to develop personal caution and boundaries as we come of age and our minds develop. Oddly enough, fear acts as a warning sign and prepares you for danger. It can enable you to better handle things emotionally as you grow older. Of course, letting fear overcome you is obviously bad because it can cause you to isolate yourself and become cruel, cynical and nihilistic like Pitch. He lost his hope, wonder, dreams, and aspirations. Fear can ruin you if you let it. Not to be cringey but that’s what I took from the film lol.

Pitch's backstory is more tragic in the books, (wish we could see a movie but yes, I think that fear is also necessary in our lives. But in this case Pitch just wanted to scare forever every child with his powers. If he really wants to get people more careful he doesn't need to completely merge them with nightmares forever. That's also why the guardians have to put a stop on what he was doing.

jack frost brings the winter ♡ i'll say he's like a winter spirit or sth

I loved this so much. Seeing other people recognize the movie is heart warming to me, me and my family watch it at least once a year. It’s just amazing

It’s tragic that this movie didn’t get more attention when it came out, but if you want more to the story of the Guardians the film is based on a book series by William Joyce called the Guardians of Childhood (Joyce is also behind Robots, Meet the Robinsons, Epic, and Rolie Polie Olie if you remember that kids tv series)

Omg I loved Roly Poly Olie as a kid!

The sandman is perhaps more commonly known in Europe, or at least I grew up late 80s early 90s watching a TV show in Germany called Sandmännchen which was on before bed like a bedtime story. There are videos on KZread you can check out- it was made with stop motion animation and has a theme tune that still comes into my head every time I think of it. The character for the TV show was based of a character by Hans Christian Andersen, but would have to look into things more to see if that’s the origin of the Sandman in general :)

There's a theory that this is set in the same universe as Labyrinth. As the 4 (now 5) are Guardians of Children, Jareth would be a Guardian of Teenagers. No way it's true, but fun to think about.

Ok, So in mythology, Jack Frost is the leader of the wild hunt and embodies the cold and dark side of winter, as well as the excitment for the hunt the myth goes something like this: in the nights of winter in wich you can hear the wind frow like a thousand souls you will know its jack frost and his wild hunt af a hundred souls, beware, if he hunts you you will become part of the eternal hunt as well in pop culture, jack forst is just the guy that brings you winter

Finally someone who knows the legend of the sandman. No one else knows who he is

Ironic that you made the Avengers comment - it was released in the same year that the first Avengers movie came out, which is exactly why it didn't do well in sales and stuff. It was meant to have sequels, like Kung Fu Panda or How to Train Your Dragon do, but because it did so poorly when it first came out they didn't have the funds to make more. So disappointing, especially considering that it's one of my favourite Dreamworks films. Thank you guys for reacting to it!

I loved this movie. I remember crushing hard on Jack Frost back in middle school. And I'm not ashamed to say I still do!

My daughter watched it really young and after seeing it she kept talking about "I belive in them, all of them!" We don't even have a Jack Frost or Sandman in our country. But she was convinced they were all real. It was so fun and magical. And of course I backed it up. We have a different kind of tooth fairy, but i switched to the movie version since she was so into the characters.

I love this movie, can't believe its almost 10 years old now. I have all the Guardians of Childhood books it's based off of.

The animation in this movie kills me every time I watch, it's amazing!

You should watch Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. It has some really good animations, and the story is sick!

First of all thank you for reacting to this movie. I've been recommending it since a long time alongside Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole. Also there do is end credit scene, check it out if you get time. What was your favorite guardian? Mine would be probably be Sandy. Come to think of it Pitch's fear of Sandy was so legit given unlike Santa, Tooth and Bunny, Sandy's belief can't be shaken since wonder, hope can leave your side but dreams can't since they're part of your (human) system whether for kids or adults. Sandy was badass and his powers were most essential for kid's belief to remain intact. I'm glad how it was improvised that why Jack's should be guardians, not because he was powerful and stand against Pitch but because it was his center, fun. Fun is the only thing that can divert you from fear, confusion or other negative emotions. Also I think the reason Jack still had his powers when non believed him while other lost it when non believed them is because Jack was an spirit. I think others were simply chosen to become guardians but Jack actually died and then became a spirit of winter so in that sense I guess he's an elemental spirit. His powers aren't concerned with emotions of kids like hope or wonder but with season. Also there's a theory that Jamie might be Jack's sister's descendant cause they both look so much alike. Tooth breaking Pitch's teeth was badass cause if Tooth Fairy gives you quarter then she can take your tooth. Rest I'm sure everyone would explain you each guardians' origins in comment section. This has been one of my favorite movies back in those, it was such a unique take. I'm always bitter that it didn't get a sequel cause it bombed in cinema much like what happened with Treasure Planet and Atlantis. I'm glad at least Brother Bear got a sequel (if you like Treasure Planet and Atlantis, you'll like it). I think Rise of the guardians, Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole (think of it like animated GOT but with amazing fights,visuals and storytelling), The Adventures of TinTin (I'm not sure if it's actually 3d or motion picture but regardless it had solid that's set both in 17th pirates life and in presentation crime adventure like POTC) and Meet the Robinsons are one of the only rare 3d movie that I actually liked cause they were so original and fresh. Guys have you seen all Jurassic Park movies cause I really don't remember if you cause I really wanna recommend you to watch Jurassic World Dominion prologue that's recently been released.

So glad y'all watched this! First time I saw it, was on TV from what I remember and ended up very much liking it. All the actors who voiced the characters were a good fit. I knew each of the actors by their voice they are just that distinct. Even w/ Alex Balwin doing 'Russian Santa', you still know it's him. I loved they got Hugh Jackman, Chris Pine, and the eloquent Jude Law in there. ☺ Speaking of JL, if you cam fit it in you should react to-- The Holiday. Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and before she quit acting- Cameron Diaz are in it. I just knew you guys would love this film.
