Tighten was always like that. Power doesn’t “corrupt”, it allows people to be who they truly are cuz they think can get away with it. So Hal was always a bad guy. I’ve seen a lot of people watch the movie and get serious red flags/danger vibes from his behavior. It can be seen as funny cuz he’s a guy and it’s a comedy, but irl that behavior isn’t cool. This is also shown by how Metroman turned out. He wasn’t a bad guy, and his circumstances were similar to Hal in that neither earned their power.

Well see, the difference is that Metroman grew to despise his power and the role it had given him in society. And more than that, he was sick of being good at everything. That's why he chose to become "music man," he was terrible at it. It was a skill that he could actually grow in and improve upon through his own merits and effort.

Yeah more or less In Metroman's case, he always had everything he wanted. He was rich, good looking, everybody liked him, it's not really the same as Hal who had nothing but a tiny flat and a bed inside the wall . Metroman had no motivation to be bad But that's not a reason to hurt and steal, i'm not saying that, i'm just saying comparing Metroman to Hal is wrong. Their lives were completely different. I feel some emphaty for Hal, but not that much since he really is a douch

I think Hal was more of an r/niceguy. He felt *entitled* to Roxanne and never really viewed her as a person. He had a fantasy in his head of how she would be, how she should act, and when she didn't obey he reacted almost violently. Punching his van, storming off, man handling her, throwing her around like a ragdoll, nearly walking her off the edge of a building as he pursued her like a predator, yelling when she wouldn't be with him, abandoning her atop a skyscraper, and trying to kill her when he couldn't have her... Repeatedly. You could see all through out the movie how Roxanne would lean away. Presenting clear body language communication, her expressions were always uncomfortable around him, and the scene where he abandoned her on the spire of a skyscraper? There was a red light flashing in the background. Signalling your big red flag. I like that this story touched up on that subject. It honestly very important. This is by far my favorite film.

So he thinks it's like an equation or something: flowers + dinner = girlfriend. And they just don't get it when girls reject them despite them making all the "right moves". So they get angry. when I was a kid, I hated metroman for his reasons, but now I'm grown, I completely understand metroman Metro Man was tired of always being a hero. It's not that he dislikes saving people, but rather felt like that he never really had a choice. He decided to MAKE a choice, and chose to give up crime-fighting and go into retirement. He away be of what the city love him to be, there savior. But now he realized that he should have become someone that he love to be instead. Metroman's message is often overlooked, it's alright to help others and all, but you are not responsible for anyone's happiness, you should come first on your list of priorities, and no matter how much better the world would be with your help, if you are not happy, then what's the point? Do what you love to do and be who you want to be, and don't let anyone or anything stop you or make you feel wrong for doing so.

I think the issue for me is that although he made a choice to give up superhero’ing in doing so, he allowed an “evil” villain to take over the city and left the people at the mercy of saiid villain. And the reason he did that was because he knew he wouldn’t/couldn't be affected and or he wouldn't have to suffer the consequences, but others would and that’s sort of where it fails for me to give support to Metroman.

He knows Megamind doesn't actually want to hurt people, all he's done is really basic villain stuff like steal stuff and minimal damage. Megamind isn't a threat. Here’s the best way to look at Megamind, Metro Man and their effect on the world around them. They aren’t heroes OR villains. They are taking part in a school play and were assigned their roles. And they took both roles into being professional actors. It’s ALWAYS about the show, the presentation. Megamind’s methods never hurt anyone. It’s clear from how Roxanne treats his early threats. He wanted her to play her part, but like a show, it just LOOKS like she’s in danger. It’s all property damage, trolling…terrorism. But no one dies in this method. (You can’t possibly tell me he pronounces all those words wrong genuinely, and he just enjoys ticking people off by trolling them) He realizes he wants the other role, but he’s ASSIGNED his role, he can’t be another role unless he’s someone else. So he plays the director. And he made the WRONG cast choice but was too proud to choose someone else. He wants to escape not the show, but the tropes. He acts slightly entitled for Roxanne, but he is more saying I’m not ALLOWED to have these things because I’m the bad guy. You won’t LET me change. Metro Man straight up didn’t want this show anymore. He wanted another show. And one HE has to earn. Hence why he chose music. No physical training he always has done, no super power helping him do it, he has to actively learn how to play. And currently he’s awful and has to learn. Which is what he wants. Minion is more the backstage manager handling the costumes and helping the theatrics hit the perfect adrenaline. (Intentionally making those RIDICULOUS warm up times.) And when Megamind says he doesn’t want the role, Minion basically is saying the show may as well be canceled. Which it more or less was since all the cracks of the show WITHOUT Minion fell apart. Hal, was never in the show. He’s the camera guy. He WATCHES the show. He never played the role. He could only take what he assumed happened from watching. Metro Man got Roxanne because he saved her. Metro Man would never have died if he just put down Megamind. (There are MILLIONS of viewers that say that the hero should just kill the villain.) Not only was that untrue, but Hal never even fit in the roles in the first place. And showed exactly why someone LIKE Hal can’t have those powers. Because it’s not the power, it’s their control. And he has NONE. Because he never caught on this was a performance. He could act as he pleased because he wasn’t a character in the show. Roxanne realized as time went on how these guys saw their role and she decided to snap these people out with REALITY and not playing into their show. And it just kept getting her stuck in various versions until Hal was powerless, and she understood Megamind really was just as human as the rest of them.

When you really dive into it, Megamind had such a powerful and complex message. Our roles aren’t given to us, we chose our roles based on our path. Labels put us in a box and it’s up to us to go that extra mile and chase after what it is that was destined for us. And destiny is not always set in stone. Being a hero is not a lifetime gig, villainy is not something that you should be boxed into because you showcase certain stereotypical characteristics that others have placed upon you, and just because you’re not the “villain” doesn’t make you the good guy either. Hal was a regular guy but he was massively creepy, had no boundaries and no respect for Roxanne, but because he wasn’t Metroman’s arch nemesis he wasn’t thrust into the “bad guy” box until the truth literally slapped him in the face and the public opened their minds. Megamind was actually given room and support to grow into who he was always supposed to be, and Hal had to go to the rockiest of bottoms to really have his entire character and actions shoved unceremoniously into his face to be able to fix himself. Metroman freed himself, and Megamind was finally able to shatter the cliche and get the girl. One of my top 7 favorite animated movies of all time for the absolute best of reasons.

Oddly enough you guys sort of missed some of the underlying problems. Megamind and Hal are similar, but not the same. Originally Megamind tried to be as good as he perceived Metro Man was. Decades of being put down or sent to stand in the corner man him doubt himself, he had little self esteem. Hal always thought of himself as an Alpha, he just convinced himself he would always play second fiddle to Metro Man because he lacked super powers. When he was given power and still denied what he knew in his mind was rightfully his he became angry and sought vengeance against the world. He had to show everyone he was better than them.

Animation : if you watch the Observatory scene you'll notice Metro Man dissapear for a few frames. This lines perfectly with Metro Man's story about using his super speed to go outside.

One of my favorite little details from this movie is when the spider lands in Megamind's eye, specifically the moment right before Minion is about to slap him You can see how he's all cheery, looking at Roxanne, then he turns, and if you go frame, you will notice that they animated him turning towards Megamind, squashed his face the *tiniest* bit so that the next movement would have some build up and then BAM, pure shock on his face as he proceeds to slap the spider (and as a result Megamind as well) Such a neat little detail which you probably wouldn't even notice on your first viewing, since your attention is all on where the spider is moving :D

One thing I really liked about this movie was that it explored the civilians attitudes as well. Because one thing that people say, is that people can create heroes or villains depending on how they treat people. If the civilians in the school did not exclude him in that way, that would not have happened. That teacher sucked. Lmao

When it comes to the nature vs nurture argument i think nurture plays a more important part than nature. Metroman was adopted by rich parents so he was spoiled as a child but had good morals overall that's why as he matured much quicker and found his calling early on in the movie, megamind even tho was raised in prison, i like to think he still had a happy upbringing because he got out by showing good behavior. Also had minion with him the whole time so he knew the bond of friendship. Now we don't know that much about hal expect that he has creeppy stalker-ish behaviour. I'm guessing since he lives alone in a one bedroom apartment his parents might have passed away early in his life and also didn't have any friends so he didn't get the nurture that both megamind and metroman got.

That was a reference to Superman taking Lois on a flight through the city. Like Megamind, Hal tends to see the surface of things. He sees Christopher Reeve flying her through a city, and it's all romantic, and he thinks it's the flight that makes it romantic, so he tries to copy it, and he's genuinely surprised when it fails to be romantic.

I don't remember what the full quote was, but as someone mentioned it in another video, I find it interesting that Megamind's possible original plan was to make Roxanne the hero, not Hal, had things gone smoothly and the two of them didn't find his hideout.

  • @SebasTian58323
    @SebasTian583232 жыл бұрын

Hal in an interesting character to me. I mean, he only thinks he should "get the girl because he saved her" because Megamind told him that's how it worked, and Megamind only thinks that because he's been raised by criminals in jail and isn't very socially adapted so he only goes of what he assumes is happening with Metriman and Roxanne. I think in the beginning, Hal was just an awkward guy who had a crush on a girl who didn't like him back, but his powers and Megamind's bad advice turned him into a villain. For example, look at the scene where Hal invited her to his apartment for the bounce house party. He wanted to spend time with the girl he liked, but after he left Roxanne's field of vision, he didn't get upset about her not wanting to go with him, he got upset about how bad his suggestions were. He's an awkward guy who likes a girl, but has no idea how to actually talk with her. He doesn't do anything negative towards her except get a little jealous about someone else being here partner, not until 1) he got the powers, 2) Megamind, who he thinks is his "space dad", tells him that the hero always gets the girl. After that is when he changes from a funny, clueless, lazy, awkward, dim-witted nerd to be a aggressive, vengeful, bad-tempered, sadistic guy. There's a clear difference before and after. Clearly, at least some of that was in him before, but he never acted on it. Which is important to understand. Everyone has some dark part of themselves, but what separates good people from bad people is making the choice not to act on that part. In the scene I mention, he genuinely believes his ideas were terrible, as no one else is around for him to be putting on a show, but he's so awkward and dim witted that it's just what came to mind in the moment as he was talking with her. He just wanted to spend time with her at that point. Afterwards, when he kidnapped her to drop her and save her, as a clear misunderstanding of what saving Roxanne and "getting the girl" meant is when he goes from an awkward guy trying to get the girl to a villain. Once he has the power and expectations, and then is let down again is when he becomes a violent villain. Clearly, Hal wasn't a perfect guy, but I think having all those powers corrupted him and brought out the worst parts of his personality, and having his expectations raised by Megamind and then his crush destroying them solidified the negative parts of him. I remember reading somewhere that the inspirations for his character were Syndrome and Lex Luthor. I can see it. His name is also a combination of two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

This movie is kind of about how positive reinforcement motivates to be good. Megamind couldn't achieve any affection and attention even though trying to do good things, so he turned "evil", and it was him playing "evil" that actually got him the attention with Metroman. He viewed it as a rivalry but under the charade it was actually the nearest he got to a friendship by kinda acting out. Hal also thought that by turning a hero, he'd automatically get the girl. Difference was, that Hal had no joy in doing good things, while Megamind had joy in making Roxanne happy. So when they didn't get what they'd hoped for out of doing good things, Hal dropped his act while Megamind did not stop striving for helping the ones he cherished. That's why him turning to Bernard was a turning point for him - without others being prejudiced against him, he received positive reinforcement for the first time in his life for his good actions and realized that him acting this way was actually good for smth

Megamind was always told that he was no good and eventually he believed it and decided that's who he is and who he will ever be. And the sad thing is that this happens to people in real life (not with evil but with not being any good) where someone gets told they are bad so often that they no longer see the good or the worth in themselves.

I absolutely love this movie, period. That said, it does always bother me that Megamind is has no repercussions for his actions. He starts the movie with multiple life sentences. Even if that's just from property destruction, that's a *lot* of damages built up. He *makes* Hal, but there are no consequences to those damages (and there really likely is loss of life there). Still, the movie is so good it rises over all of that to remain a favorite.
