    I had heard about this movie, but hadn’t looked into it. No one had mentioned the director!!! .. let alone the screen play water & cinematographer! This will be visually stunning you are right .. but I’m not drawn in yet by the story. But I’m betting with the kind of writing we’ve come to expect from their past movies that we won’t be able to look away. So many shots in just the trailer that we’re making me go “oh my god! Oh my god” lol, over & over. Great to see others that appreciate these attributes. 👌☺️

    I already know that Andrew Scott can bring the creepiness, so my one big hope is that his performance is also allowed to show how charming and convincingly *harmless* Tom is capable of appearing. That dichotomy is at the heart of what makes him such a unique monster.

    Never saw the other ones? Malkovich played the character in Ripley’s Game, which is a tight little movie, with a little of little eccentricities, of the older Ridley. Then there was Barry Pepper in Ripley Underground a couple years later, in a movie that was pretty much buried. I didn’t even hear about it, until a decade after its release. Very different movies, from the 90’s, Talented Mr Ripley. *oh, and there’s one with Dennis Hopper as Ridley, but I can’t remember the name. It’s from the 70’s. There’s also Purple Noon, which is what Talented Mr Ripley was a remake of.

    I agree, there was a certain innocence that he had, whether it was the character not understanding how evil he could be, or the evil just being able to put on a simple face. Either way he played it so brilliantly. Definitely looking forward to the series!

    Many truly unscrupulous persons are in denial. Yes, I could picture Matt Damon’s Tom in real life. Many real life baddies look innocent, harmless, charming, and they fool so many people. I’m not feeling this version though maybe it’s just the trailer painting a false picture. The machiavellianism is written too plainly on Tom’s face. No one would trust him.

    Exactly! Matt’s Ripley gives me secondary embarassement throughout the whole movie, it’s his genius performance of being awkward yet sharply focused on his goal to leave behind all the frustration he has had in his life…his Ripley is the best ever I think. ❤

    I look forward to this. The collective resume of all parties involved is stunning. Part of the fun of the original movie was that Matt Damon's Mr. Ripley, despite his youth, was skilled at conning most of the other characters in the film. Even those who should have known better being supposedly so worldly and adept. Tip of the hat to Phillip Seymour Hoffman who was quite a formidable foe to Mr. Ripley. I hope this new limited series, with it's much more mature protagonist, will be an enhancement to the Ripley universe, and not a diminution. It's one of those movies that makes you cringe to think anyone is going to tamper with it. It was just so PERFECT. Massive shoes to fill, indeed.

    Possible spoilers: Just loved this. Like a thousand times better than the current season of _True Detective_ - which is the last show I finished. Unlike the Matt Damon movie version of Ripley, this Ripley makes mistakes - a lot of them - and for most of the show, things do not go smoothly for him. Several times he is nearly caught - because, well, hiding evidence of multiple murders is extremely difficult. At first, I was kind of bummed with the B&W cinematography - but it's so razor sharp - and the contrast and lighting is so good - and the shots are all so well composed - and it's Italy - that I started really digging it. There's one very tense scene at the end, where we as an audience, think Ripley's game is finally up - but then he very cleverly manages to squirm out of it. I think this is the scene where he becomes an evil genius. Another difference with the movie version, is that the Dickie character in this one is pretty likeable - unlike Jude Law's Dickie in the movie version, who comes across as callous and repulsive. In this one, I felt really bad for Dickie and what happened to him. Of course, your mileage may vary - but I found _Ripley_ to be so good - I binged the entire season in 2 days.

    Binged it in one day, it's just excellent. I think one of the biggest weakness of the 1999 movie is how they went out of their way to portray Tom Ripley as this down on his luck dreamer who just couldn't catch a break and had to resort to what he did. Here, you root for him, because he is a very clumsy conman in the begining and him slowly addapting makes you want him to succeed. I like the inverse Marge: Her disliking him from the start and slowly getting to trust him in the end. Not to mention that the Italian characters aren't portrayed as one dimentional doofusses which was a welcome change and kept the tention going.

  • @mxbishop

    @mxbishop

    @andrascsepregi4154 I agree. It all felt like a very authentic Italy from the early 1960s. Beautifully filmed. And the Italian characters were not portrayed like Chico Marx stereotypes in this version - they seemed like real people. Just a very well done show. Highly recommended.

    Netflix is a platform that caters to the short attention span of most viewers. I haven’t seen cinematography this beautiful on it before *nod to honmy If such a place exists I hope to take it in before I pass. This redo is positively inspiring as a work of art. The detail is as incredible as Dickie’s paintings are elementary and derivative, which rivals Tom’s swimsuit for most revolting detail. Thank you to everyone who applied their craft to bring us this gift.
