Maybe it isn't as complicated as everyone is making it out to be? 1) If you don't go on pre-season, you're playing catch-up. 2) He wanted to leave in the summer. Made it obvious to everyone. Was desperate to leave (before he even met Ten Hag) 3) The team plays better without him at this moment in time 4) He will be leaving in January, or the Summer regardless of if all this happened or not If you look at it logically, all the things ETH is doing are making perfect sense. He isn't playing as much at the start because of the missed pre-season. He won't be here very long regardless. What is the point of building the team around Cristiano....It serves no purpose to the future of the club. Take off the rose tinted glasses, and also stop being up Rios arse Joel. I wouldn't sabotage my career as a manager by picking favourites. He dropped Maguire and nobody has piped up about it since, this should be the same. The problem a lot of fans have with ex-united pundits is they have their 'friend' hat on. They all talk about how Cristiano must be feeling, "oh he must be upset or fuming". All we want to see is the team play well, we're happy for him to be on the bench. He's getting paid 500k a week and he's almost 40. Be a role-model in the dressing room, and don't act like a child in front of the world.

Spot on. I'd be living in dreamland just getting £500k in 10yrs, let alone getting it every week for 1-2yrs. If he really cared about playing CL football, he would've paid to terminate his contract and offer to play for Bayern or whoever for free, he can still earn a crap ton of money from image rights, sponsors and IG posts etc. Truth is no one wanted him with his egotistical demands and they saw that he becomes a blackhole of the team that sucks in possession and attention so it's not worth the hassle. It just so happens his form has been crap this season and we have a manager that's willing to put the clubs progress ahead of him which has made the whole thing worse and now he's throwing his toys out to force a move.

Joel, we love you for being part of this great podcast, but please keep in mind that Erik Ten Hag's top priority is to win matches for united, and it's within his power to do whatever he wills to achieve that. It includes telling Ronaldo whatever he needs to and plays him whenever he pleases. Now if kicking out Ronaldo helps us get there faster, he should do that. He has zero obligation to Ronaldo. ZERO.

@@cottonhillfiddymen Honestly mate, this is it in a nutshell. You look at the facts that everyone knows. Ronaldo didn't turn up to pre season tour. Then in one of the home pre season games he leaves early (yes, others did too) and disrespects his team. He then gets chances against teams like Brentford and Sociedad and does nothing. His build up play is shocking and it's not like he's banging them in all over the gaff. He then refuses to play and leaves the pitch again early when the team are winning. Forget anything else, that behaviour is unacceptable and while Keane said on Saturday that previous players have done worse at United, I couldn't care less about that. This is a ETH team, not a Fergie team, so that point Keane made is irrelevant. Long story short, Rio and Keane lose massive amounts of credibility for not saying "he's bang out of order" and saying nothing else after that. To say his behaviour isn't great or whatever, but the manager may have communication issues, is basically excusing his actions. You may say it's not Rio, but it is!!!!!

Ofc you make exceptions with the arguably the best player EVER. Do you think there weren't exceptions with Best, Cantona, Messi, Maradona, Pelé..etc? The GOATS always get a preferential treatment, because they've already proven they are the best. Even Sir Alex was more lenient with Cantona or CR7 than with others. Even Roy Keane was more lenient with CR7. He saw the desire, he saw the talent, so he knew he's going to cry and throw a tantrum every once in a while. It's the result of wanting to always play and wanting to always be the best. But that's the attitude you want.

Personally I feel Ronaldo was communicated to about his role when ETH first came in, and I feel he wasn’t happy with it hence not showing up to preseason for convenient family issues and looking to a move during that time. When he realized the move wasn’t going to happen he figured he’d play himself into the team or use his stature to get what he wants. To his surprise ETH is a stronger character than expects and his influence on the team football wise is not convincing him bough to guarantee the role he wants. It’s as simple as Ronaldo needs to commit to the team or move on and pursue his individual goals elsewhere

Ronaldo changed the state of affairs from the GET GO when he waited until days before pre season started to inform the club he wanted to leave. He then wouldn’t join the tour in any capacity due to personal reasons which could be pure coincidence, but to me feels too convenient. I think he believed he’d have a new club within a few weeks of his announcement. He then starts our season unfit , and quite frankly when he’s played against the lesser teams in the Europa, he’s been abjectly poor. I don’t get how Rio can say Ten hag should have informed him - he owes him NOTHING, especially when he’s dropping sub par performances against minnows. And how are we certain ten hag knew he wasn’t in his plans during the summer ? Greatest player of all time for me but we need to look at this rationally. Lukaku leaked our running stats for his own PR and we all wanted him gone, why are we making exceptions for someone who is approaching 40 and has absolutely no interests in the success of the team? Thanks for the memories but it’s time to move on for both parties

Please take this into consideration! We saw Casemiro looking like a different player when he wasn’t receiving consistent starts and then that changed and now he looks like Real Madrid Casemiro when he’s received consistent play. You have to be delusional to not think that same idea goes toward Cristiano! The proof is in the pudding, Cristiano IS (with no debate) the most consistent goal scorer of all time but that will rely on consistency of play. They go hand and hand. All strikers no matter the stature rely on momentum. Ten Haag has done a great job and I love the form Man U have been in but please anyone here, (even Joel HAHA), who was the last front line attacking player to score for Man U this year? Cristiano against Everton!!! A consistent Man U would have built back their defense, (they have) built back a consistent mid field presence, (they have) and understood that Rashford is a winger and always has been a winger, and should have built that culture around Ten Haag’s ideas but also with a lethal striking force, because we have the luxury of having the most consistent, clutch and potent scorers of all time. I have fears of scoring droughts with this MAN U team, which is crazy to say when they have a guy who just scored his 700th club goal on the team.

Charles at last a balanced view instead of a lot of nonsense. The media are loving the infighting at Utd. We are our own worse enemy. Ronaldo could have helped us get CL and maybe win a cup this season but persisting playing with a front line that can barely score and full backs who still need to learn how to cross a ball. Shaw’s to Casemiro was great but can’t remember when he or the other backs or wingers hit other good balls into the area. As for Rashford he is not the 18 year old starlet he is not a 9. Martial is but is injured too often. I hope Erik can resolve this but when Ronaldo goes who will replace his goals? No one here at this time.

    1. Rio I really respect how hard you're trying to be loyal to Ronaldo, we all do love him and you. But you're not being loyal to the club - the thing we all love. 2. How can EtH 'commuicate' at the start of the season how involved Ronaldo will be. Firstly, Ronaldo wasn't even there. Secondly, there are so many factors: form, injuries, morale, games etc. It would be silly for a manager to make commitments at the start of the season. EtH has actually done a really well to keep results going and handle this Ronaldo situation. Many managers wouldn't be able to. 3. Even if the it was somehow EtH's fault (which it isn't). You know the principle: The manager is the most important person at the club and no player is bigger than the club. We could have argubaly blamed Sir Alex during the Becks, Keane or Van Nistelrooy fall outs. And Sir Alex was probably to blame for some of them. But he pointed to the principle. Club > Player.

The process is underway, anyone that knows football can see it. Man Utd are showing the early signs of being a force again in the PL. This is primarily down to ETH. Putting unnecessary pressure on a manager who has behaved impeccably just to protect their mate who is acting like a brat is embarassing. Ronaldo has REPEATEDLY been a horrendously selfish poor professional (team sense, not personal fitness/desire sense) - he got away with it when he was the best player on the pitch every week.. but he isn't now. Every player loses the battle against time - evidenced by the fact NOBODY in Europe wants him, and probably want him even less watching him doing his best clown impression at every opportunity.

There's no evidence that Ten Hag entered the season with an intention to drop Ronaldo. Ronaldo wasn't match fit for Brighton at home, having missed training and tour. Nevertheless ETH brought him on after 53 minutes. Ronaldo then started Brentford away. He gave the ball away for the first goal, and was dreadful in terms of helping the side keep possession/press Brentford. He was then rightly dropped in favour of Elanga (with Martial not ready to start - he came on at 45) for the Liverpool game, and United played much better. United have played far better this season without him. The only game he made a crucial intervention in was Everton, where the team was set up with Martial as striker (Ronaldo came on after 27). Every game Ronaldo has started, we've been dreadful - Brentford (a), Sociedad (h), Sheriff (a), Nicosia (a), Nicosia (h) Newcastle (h). Sheriff away and Newcastle home we were immediately better when Rashford and/or Martial were subbed in.

Quick question.. how the hell does Rio know that ETH didn't speak to Ronaldo, and told him that he isn't gonna be playing a lot this season? because (1) HE (Ronaldo) wanted to leave before the season even started and made it VERY clear. (2) The man is freaking 37 YEARS OLD!!! (3)HE DOESN'T FIT IN THE SYSTEM!!!!!!! (4) We play soooo much better without him. And here I thought that Rio being a former United player, would see that its bigger than just one player, and the team doesn't and shouldn't revolve around one player, whether he's club legend or not. I just really hope Ronaldo goes in January, but knowing this club, they'll keep him until the end of the summer just to make more money selling t shirts.

I believe ETH had Ronaldo in his plans. But he never got to see if Ronaldo could do what ETH expects of him during matches until after pre season. And then he was playing catch-up in terms of fitness. This is not a matter of setting out his plans at the beginning of the season. Martial performed better than expected and became part of the plans. Ronaldo wasn’t there and lost his spot to martial in pecking order. ETH is fair. Ronaldo performs means he wins back his spot. No one is bigger than club, so no one keeps place based on reputation

On Sancho, It always takes the mercurial type players the longest time to adjust to possession type coaching and styles of play. You can see Sancho is more focused on not losing the ball than he is taking his man on. He needs to find the right balance. I don’t think he’ll find that on the left, he needs a chance back on the right where he’ll be forced to make crosses and add more to his game rather than cutting in, but with Antony playing so well it’ll be difficult to do so.

I don’t think you can blame ten hag for ronaldo’s reaction against spurs. For one the statement of giving him five minutes here and there isn’t true. Barring the spurs game, where we adopted a very intense press consistently throughout that match (not something ronaldo is exactly renown for doing especially at 37), he started 3 of the last 4 games and the one he didn’t start he came on 18 minutes into the came and still played 70 odd minutes. The only reason he wasn’t in the Chelsea squad is because of storming out the mid match against spurs. When his teammates arguably played the best game of their season. Ronaldo missed pre season, played his hand get a new club in summer, (which the club let Jorge mendes try to find a suitor, without preventing him) but no European club came in. The manager shouldn’t have to play a half fit player who wants to leave just because it’s ronaldo and that’s without mentioning he’s not playing well for united or Portugal at the moment. Barring pundits pulling excuses out of thin air to I assume not tarnish ronaldo’s legacy and put the blame on anyone but him. I don’t see how you can see the previous months course of events and think ronaldo is being disrespected or the manager is being dishonest or something.

Rio needs to take some blame. Ronaldo was ready to join City until Rio and co. personally called Ronaldo and told him not to go to City. If Ronaldo followed his heart, he would have gone to City, scored loads of goals, and continued his goal tally. The decline of Ronaldo is on Rio and whoever else was involved. Rio the same dude who said to give Ole a blank cheque and take whatever salary he asks for.

Scholes (The Overlap) told us how he got what was getting to him. 3. Rooney got dealt with and in fairness we needed him, he was still heavily contributing to our success. besides, you're missing the point. The CONTINUOUS media attention Ronaldo gets is insane compared to any of those players.

I think Ronaldo has always played for himself. He saw the situation at UTD the season before last. Perhaps believed Ole was a soft touch as a manager and could boss the situation like he does with that numpty who's the Portugal coach. I don't think Ronaldo accepts being a bit player on the bench even if it's communicated to him properly. So it's best he leaves and over time UTD fans will forget this sad last episode and only remember all the greatness.

From a revenue standpoint it’s impossible to compare an organization to Ronaldo especially considering how much revenue he generated for the club since he’s joined. But from a global standpoint he is much bigger, 550m instagram followers for the goat compared to 50m for united. Just one of the many comparisons of how Ronaldo is much bigger than the club. The least they can do is sell him when he asks instead of keep him and lie to him after he was the best player last season getting more man of the match awards than Kevin de Bruyne Mo Salah and Son. Playing with a donkey like maguire after his legendary career than being benched in the biggest games like man city and Tottenham. Disrespectful. Would’ve scored more than halaand has if he joined city.

I don’t appreciate the idea that a manager can somewhat guarantee a player how much (or little) time he is going to play. Every club has a squad of player who all wants to play as much as possible. The managers final judgement must be based on the players form, how he show himself on the training field and how he perform in matches. If he does’nt perform, on the training field, matches and the statistics tends to show that the team are doing better without that player, the manager obviously need to take the decisions that gaines the team, not the player. Both Rio and Keane should see that. A manager simply cannot promise a player matches due to performance one season ago. Eric Ten Hag have have done a great job in his first season as manager for United. Former managers had to struggle with poroblems in the dressing room, ETH is making sure thats not going to happen this time. No player is bigger than the club, yes it is a cliché, but its an important one.
