Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | Inside the World’s Most Dangerous Cities (Documentary)

Beyond the idyllic beaches of Copacabana, the energy of samba music, and the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer, there is another side to the city of Rio de Janeiro. It’s a city in a state of perpetual war. Heavily-armed drug dealers control the favelas, while specially-trained police battle to take them down. Sometimes favelas become battlefields. That’s what happened in Jacarezinho in May 2021, when a police drugs bust turned into a bloodbath, and left 28 dead.
There is also inter-gang violence, where increasingly heavily-armed gangs fight for territory. The ordinary people who live in the favelas are trapped by gunfire which comes from all sides. They are surrounded by urban warfare, collateral damage of the drug trade. They aren’t even safe in their own homes, as bullets can go through walls. Three people a day are killed by stray bullets in Rio de Janeiro. The emergency rooms are full of people with bullet wounds. Every day, the doctors have to deal with wounds that you would expect to see on the battlefield.
We were given special access to the Rio Military Police Special Forces Battalion (BOPE), and were able to film them operating in high-risk situations. Their tactics follow the same pattern every time: they strike fast, and they strike hard. The strategy often puts lives at risk - both the lives of local people who live in the favelas, and the lives of the police themselves. The Brazilian police commit more police shootings than almost any other force in the world, but they also have the highest rate of deaths in the line of duty.
In the streets of Rio, crime is rife, but outside of the favelas it takes the form of bag snatching, armed robbery and kidnappings. The locals live in fear. They fortify their houses with razor wire, security gates and CCTV. More and more of them now buy guns for self-defence. President Jair Bolsonaro openly encourages this, as a vocal advocate for gun rights. Since his election, laws around gun ownership and carrying weapons have been relaxed, and the number of guns registered in Rio has doubled.
This film was first released in 2022.

The majorety of people watching this very good documentary abaut Violence in Rio de Janeiro ( And all Over Brazil), don't realize the Real Dimension of the Crime in Brazil. Brazil is simple the most Violent Sociaty in the World. In Brazil every year more people are killed than in a real War Zone. I lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro for 18 long Scary months, and since my 1st day until the last one there wasnt a single day/ night without multiple shootings in my neighbourhood, and iam talking abaut Machine Gun shootings. But the Worst part of this Absolute Insane Vicious Circle ,is the fact that the common citizens Lives in Constant Fear, but Specialy from the Authorities/Police that from the criminal gangs .They arel Terrified of being stopped by the Police while driving, specialy during the Weekends. They call it a Police Blitz. I thing that by the name "you" can imagine what happens during those Police "routine" traffic stops. My Grandmother used to say this abaut Brazil " God made Brazil a Paradise But the Devil put his people to live and Rule over that country ".

I was in Rio from December to March. Stayed in São Christavao. I didnt notice much crime, except the wheel in the back of my car was stolen and a traveller I met got mugged at São Christavao train station by 8 guys, one carrying a machete. On New Years Eve I heard fireworks like you expect, then i heard them again every week. Until eventually the fireworks got a closer and didnt sound like fireworks, but gunshots. But Rio is pretty chill if you arent involved in this drug war. The only thing that reminds you of the danger is everyone's home has tall walls with barbed wire at the top. The walls and gates are so tall, you could be walking past a indoor football pitch or volleyball court and not even be aware. A lot of private property has to be closed and hidden from the public or it will attract attention from theives and criminals.

😂 I lived in Fortaleza for almost 4 years, one of the most dangerous places in LATAM. Shootings were a daily occurrence, the gangs particularly liked to put road blocks across certain roads at night and then rob the unfortunate drivers who happened upon the road blocks. At night it was common practice to never stop at traffic lights, only slow down and make sure you didn’t hit another car. Yeh real safe place!

@ Music - Videos that focus exclusively on the good side of Brazil are out there. Check them out. Further, in the video, they did show a middle-class neighborhood. Unfortunately, the homes in those neighborhoods looked like fortresses because the residents there fear home invasions. Did you not hear the woman point out that one of her neighbor’s homes in the middle-class area was burglarized, and the family held hostage for four hours? Pretending that Rio and other cities around the world don’t have serious issues with crime, deadly crime, does nothing to help address the issue.

When crimes also becomes unbearable the blame also goes to the police.

Hats off to those brave Brazilian cops who risk their lives to deal with this. That said: what if the government would just make hard drugs (heroin, cocaine) available in clinics? I believe this is being done to good effect in Switzerland. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these Brazilian gangs are not internationl drug cartels like the Mexican ones . The distribution is local, mainly in the favelas. It would be more humane, and certainly cheaper, to just distribute maintenance doses to the local addicts.

Fifty thousand euros?! Wonder how the poor people are defended in the courtroom. Yet again only certain people get a good defence sadly.

I swear Brazilian Portuguese sounds similar to Russian and Ukrainian. The way some words are pronounced throws me off and I speak Spanish which of course is similar to a degree like some Italian words I can comprehend, but not Portuguese.

I am Portuguese, and I can tell you Portuguese doesn't have anything to do with Russian and Ukrainian. I understand a little Russian.

On Google that often appears in the suggested (that Portuguese sounds like Russian). I don't really hear it myself. But a language expert will explain why you hear the similarity. They both make some sounds that are unique to the language. But that's it.

What a ridiculous, misinforming video. Rio is one of America's biggest cities, it's 50% larger than NYC. There is a lot of poverty and inequality, which makes it have some "problematic" areas. Even so, it's actually among Brazil's safer cities, by homicide rates and other statistics and has lower homicide rates than at least 40 major US cities, including Washington D.C. For the average tourist, who doesn't venture into the cities outskirts looking for some youtube footage, it's a relatively safe city

Their president isn't tough enough to make Rio safe from drug related crimes. He must learn from Bekele of El Salvador and Duterte of the Philippines.
