LYRICS:
Reach inside and hold you close
I won't leave you on your own
Teach me the words I used to know
Yea I forgot them long ago
So hold that girl
Hold the girl
Hold the girl
Hold the girl
Sometimes I get down with guilt
For the promises I've broken to my younger self
Moving on, maybe I'll never will
Cos I left u spinning on the carousel
Been living without you
Been living without you
Reach inside and hold you close
I won't leave her on your own
Teach me the words I used to know
Yea I forgot them long ago
I wanna remember
She is me and I am her
So hold that girl
So hold that girl
Sometimes I just want to run away
Leave behind that old me, start again
Then I remember who I’m really made of
And she’s been hide and seeking, waiting all along
Close to your heart
Never ever let you go (never let you go)
They’ll tell you to sit up and shut up and grow up
What the hell do they know?
Cos the girl in your soul’s seen it all
And you owe her the world
So hold the girl
Hold the girl

How’s the comment 2 days old
The night this audio came out my parents had an enormous fight. I have a 6 year old sister, and so I took her away from the shouting and made noise and played with her and helped her to sleep. When I heard the song I cried so much because I remembered being her age and being all alone, and I had been holding and protecting my sister in a way that no one held me. So the title/refrain has a double meaning, holding my younger self in my head as my current self, and holding my sister in her stead, taking care of her in all the ways I can, because I didn't have anyone to take care of me but she does.

This video felt like an allegory for being trapped somewhere (a broken household, a secluded place away from life, having so much emotional baggage that you can't leave even though you know what's bringing you down), and finally breaking free. It gives big western thriller movie references, and as a person stuck in the midwest, it's super close to home. Please keep doing the unexpected with your videos, and music, you are insanely talented.

so many themes of freedom and independence are in this video that I love. Rina said she wrote this after a therapy session and was just crying. We often put a lot on ourselves due to whatever we go through but this video showcases that the only one holding you back is truly yourself and to fully move forward is embracing your inner self and working through those imperfections/struggles. @@Starkardur yes. Gaga is a classically trained NYU undergrad child piano prodigy with a mastery of various historical musical genres and a very strong instinct for monstrously catchy hooks. She is a powerful vocalist and great dancer in platform heels. She's been performing live since she was 15, and is more at home on stage than I presume her childhood room. She nearly danced thru an injured hip live in concert. She was THE pop star of the 2008-13 pop boom ... oh wait were u talking about lyrical content? lol. "ra ra ra ah ah ga ga ooh la la" is the best u can hope for Even when she's trying to be deep and meaningful, her turns of phrase usually fly as well as a goat, more often than not very blunt and obvious. Look at born this way, for example. Angel down is serious Gaga done right but it's the only example I can think of that I'd say is really good

@@louschwick7301 I so far have not seen Gaga's impressive piano skills, yes she's playing the piano but it's basic level 4 thing and as she has yet to compose a 3 songs of her own, I fail to see what's so masterful about what she does. Rina has been through so much, so she doesn’t sing for nothing and also she holds three degrees at the same time from cambridge so she definitely knows what she is doing. she is innovative, not repeating or boring. that’s why people keeps saying but sawayama was better. NO!! sawayama is definitely a great album but all of her works include her ingenius musical talent and all of them deserves respect.
The clothes signify to me how everything where she grew up on felt so retrograde and dated like when you grow up in a household with dated beliefs and you just want to runaway cause you know there might not be much of you left if you stay for long...or at least that's what it feels like. I think that's a bit of a jump given that she grew up in London as daughter of a designer mother, so would have been in with pretty hip circles from the time she was a small child.
For me this song is about embracing your inner child who you may have neglected.I really feel this song cause when I was younger I used to be so full of life, able to do anything I set my mind to but I somehow lost that spark in my hurry to grow up so hearing ‘Oh I wanna remember she is me and I am her’ or ‘Teach me the words I used to know, I forgot them long ago’ really cuts deep cause I really do want to be like that again, I want younger me to teach me how to be like that again if that makes any sense

i have a feeling she’ll become mainstream eventually. honestly it just takes one of her songs to become viral on tik tok and there we go

I'm crying, this is beautiful. 3:34 gets me every time... I need the album like yesterday!
For me its about holding on to what is essential to who you are in the face of life forcing you to change. She talks about not recognizing herself at a certain point "teach me the words...I forgot them long ago." Its about living without acknowledging her truth, wanting to run away from herself but at the end wanting to rediscover who she is and what she's made of "I want to remember, she is me and I am her"
almost cried experiencing this without listening to the single beforehand. everything she delivers, i felt it all. goosebumps all over. the kind of dance music you put on to give you a sense of hope in the middle of bleakness. rina, i love you for your generosity in giving what the public wants without losing your essence of self.
Rina's Vocals, Visuals and Artistic Talent is Truly Majestic... Everything Rina does GIVES ME LIFE!!!
I love how epic this song is, you don’t hear many songs like this anymore. Definitely my theme song 😎.
Everytime I listen to this song, I weep like a little child... Coming from a Christian conservative household and being a non binary gay folk, these lyrics mend my soul... I mean, now that I moved places from my toxic family, I fully understand the meaning of this song... Rina, you slay!!!
どうしてこうも最高なのだろうかリナサワヤマは。 歌詞と表現が凄く刺さります。 MVも相まって今年で一番好きな曲になりました。 これからも応援してます!
I don't think some people realize just how LUCKY we are to be alive at the same time as Rina to witness her ART in real-time.
song of the year btw
I'm obsessed with this woman
I love this song. Can't wait to see what the video will be!

It's fantastic how Rina can go really well in different styles. Such an amazing musician! 🥰❤️
This song has become an instant classic. Thank you for the lyrics, Rina. Sometimes we forget who we truly are. Some of us were bullied at school and for so long we have been ashamed of that little girl Rina talks about. The one we see as weak but, in reality, that younger self was the real strongest version of ourselves. The one who helped us pull through.
I AM OBSESSED WITH HER AND WANT HER TO BE A SUPERSTAR
Rina has the best music videos nowadays.... better than almost all the A-lists
A mãezinha nunca decepciona

RINA SAWAYAMA VOCÊ SERÁ SEMPRE FAMOSA
WATCHING THIS MV AND SONG MAKES ME REALIZE WHY IS RINA SAWAYAMA SO CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED 😭 SHE’S SO ARTISTICALLY, LYRICALLY, MUSICALLY INSANELY TALENTED LIKE THAT
Perfect soundtrack for a disney movie!!!
showstopping jawdropping earthshattering stunning beautiful majestic amazing magical magnificent
rina sawayama is such a philanthropist, she just keeps on giving. this is such a serve
oh my gosh this is EXACTLY what my dreams feel like, i’ve never seen it captured like this before! this mv is beautiful
This deserve 1million likesss and 500m views! This is a masterpiece!!!
This MV (especially the shot in which Sawayama falls from the roof) reminds me of Bartha Mason in Charlott Bronte's novel Jane Eyre. It makes a sense when we consider that Rina Sawayama is herself an immigrants. The song is (in my interpretation) about how to deal with one's ethnic identity. I'm pretty sure that this song is so rich that it must yield many different interpretations.
I love you Rina, greetings from Mexico, I can't wait to see what iconic video you are going to bring!

Rina's letting us know that we have to hold the girl, but my wig is the only thing that has to be held after this....she ate this up 👏🏼
this is REAL music. I'm in love
Rinaaaaa 🌈💪✨👏♥️🙌🥳
This video had everything, budget, production, excellent direction, a good storyline, a message, perfect execution. Rina keeps saying as always.
Another masterpiece by the next queen of pop, album of the year is coming!!
OMG!! I'm so moved! Tomorrow is my birthday and it's always a sensitive day for me. I spent the whole month trying to encourage myself not to start getting depressed or blaming myself for things that didn't go well. But just yesterday, when I discovered this song, I feel like I found the right words. I'll never forget this song ♡
Rina is very expresive and a good actress, like the other person in this song and in "This Hell" I can't believe.
I love this!! Can't find yourself by running away, the problem is "inside the house"
I'm surprised at how good this song and video are !! She is an artist that I don't listen to, just follow because she has potential. And wow, I didn't even think she had THIS potential !! This song seems like straight out of the 90s masterpieces era.
i come back to this so much!! arranged so entertainingly and clever!!
