Righteousness And Justification By Faith by Martin Luther 1483-1546 translated by Henry P Cole 1824.

This sermon was written down and preached by Martin Luther. "The apostle now addeth the example of Abraham, and rehearseth the testimony of the scripture. The first is out of Gen. xv. 6. "Abraham believed God," &c. This place the apostle here mightily prosecuteth, as also he did in his Epistle to the Romans; If Abraham (saith he) was justified by the works of the law, he hath righteousness and rejoicing; but not before God, but before men, (Rom. 4. 2, 3.) For before God, there is nothing in him but sin and wrath. Now he was justified before God, not because he did work, but because he did believe. For the scripture saith, "Abraham believed, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."
That Lutheran, Soren Kierkegaard, wrote Fear and Trembling based on "And God tempted Abraham and said unto him, Take Isaac, Mine only son, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon the mountain which I will show thee."
