Good point to make! Music was a powerful influence to help break down the color barriers you and I both knew as children. Talent doesn't care about skin color, and slowly but surely that had an impact on the world as music gave black performers a leading role in creating new musical genres, and both black and white audiences learned to appreciate the musicians who made great music regardless of the color of their skin. We are far from perfect today, but music has certainly helped contribute to moving the world in the right direction.

I worked with people who had Alzheimers and I had this one male patient who used to swear a lot and throw things at the staff and my job was to spend time with him doing things that interested him as he was bed bound. It took about 6 weeks for him to even acknowledge me in the room but one day I pulled out my iPad and put on this song and that was the key to his world. He loved it and wanted me to play it many times in a row. We went through the music of his youth each shift and I was able to get him out of bed and into his wheelchair and I would take him down to the cafeteria for ice cream and then up to the top of the hospital roof where he just basked in the sun. He trusted me more than anyone as I made my shift all about him. There were days when he would be aggressive and throw stuff and swear but I would just tell him we need some time apart snd left the room until he stopped yelling and then I would go back in and ask him if it was alright if I can in and we could watch a movie together and he would always say in a very sweet voice “YES” as if nothing had ever happened. He passed away a few years ago and I miss him. Every time I hear this song it takes me right back to my memories of him.

@@RobertSmith-iw2kbIt's a shame you write claptrap presented as fact. He wasn't so young. 63 isn't extremely old, but certainly not very young. Most importantly, he didn't have a terrible addiction, unless you count cigarettes. Yes, a trace amount of cocaine turned up in the autopsy, but he died in his sleep from a run of the mill heart attack. Could make a list of what could cause that erroneous tox result. He wasn't feeling well so he had dinner in his room and fell asleep. Those close to him, family and friends, never saw him using or under the influence. The autopsy also found he had blockages in his arteries up to 95%...bypass surgery was needed. According to one of his sons, he had a doctor's appointment scheduled for after that tour. Too bad it wasn't before the tour. Wanted to add: no drugs or drug paraphernalia was found in his room.

The man asking them questions was Andy Williams, a famous singer in his own right, and this was his TV show. I am 69 years old so I grew up with the music you are enjoying. My sisters and father and I "owned" the stereo all year, but come December 1, my mother took control and it was Andy Williams all month. He was what was known as a crooner. Check him out singing Moon River.

Born in '61 here. I grew up in a home where my mom played WLS (top 40 radio) all day in the kitchen. But most of my friends' parents played all the crooners. I feel like I got to enjoy the best of both worlds in a time when music was just magic.

Bobby Hatfield wasn't just Talented, he took a lot of time, effort and dedication to get that good at the skill of singing. He had to accept criticism, and even harder, listen to his own voice critically to know what mistakes were made, or to know how he could improve. Lots of practice, lots of rehearsal, doing it over and over, testing and comparing versions and pacing. He had an exceptional voice, and plenty of talent, but it was huge amounts of hard work that really put them on the map.

This Song was written for a 1955 Movie, titled "Unchained" about a guy going to prison...... The "I didn't think it would be a hit" was a joke..... They actually took turns singing Solo songs, while touring and recording..... A Song with them together is "You've Lost that Loving Feeling".... it was in the first "Top Gun" Movie.... This a Catagory/Genre nicknamed "Blue Eyed Soul"..... I don't know it they started it, or they are just the most well known....

I think you'll LOVE "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" which features both of them. There's a call-and-response part where they go wild. My personal favorite is an old black-and white video of them teaming up with the Blossoms (a Black girl group) for "Night Time is the Right Time" where everybody gets a turn singing the lead. It's really boisterous and loud. Hope you enjoy it!

In 1965, we had 3 TV channels, and variety shows like this were the bomb. Probably 40% of the national audience was watching this, his parents were in the audience, and they had a live orchestra reading sheet music in the background. Yes, the intro was staged, but the performances were live, live live, warts and all.

Bobbys mother was in the audience at that show, and it was the first time that she had seen her son sing professionally. How much pressure on Bobby. I never get tired of hearing the song and always look forward to the reactions of those hearing and watching for the first time. In those days, we expected performers to sing like that, without any technical assistance other than amplification.
