This is absolutely the best version of this song. No one, I repeat NO ONE has ever surpassed this version. He was singing LIVE. His mother was in the audience and he wanted to sing his very best for her. Unfortunately, Bobby Hatfield left us 20 years ago. If you have ever seen the movie "Ghost" this was the music for one famous scene.

Indeed, it is very different from the original, first heard in a 1955 movie. It’s a prisoner’s song. The inmate dreams of reuniting with his beloved (‘Are you still mine?’, ‘wait for me, wait for me’, etc). It’s a nostalgic ballad. Bobby Hatfield reworked the music into something songful and turned the song into an hymn to yearning love. There have been hundreds of versions. Bobby’s the most famous and a milestone in pop music. Being classically trained he was able to wring every drop of verbal and vocal eloquence from the music and lyrics .@@ragulper

This song was written in 1955 for a movie called "Unchained". Hundreds of artists have recorded this song. NOBODY does it like Bobby Hatfield. This will forever be HIS song. Bobby passed away in 2003. Bill Medley is still living. He will be 84 this year. Live performance. No auto tunes. One take and his parents were in the audience. No pressure there. This is how entertainers dressed way back when. I was lucky to grow up with the music of the 1950s and 1960s.

Listen to You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling and hear them both. Over 670 artists world wide recorded this song including Elvis. It will always belong to Bobby, no one has ever come close to his version. Over the years it has been used in many movies. Another I love that they did together is You’ll Never Walk Alone. Bobby was a counter tenor. Most singers have a voice range of 2, maybe 3 octaves. Bobby's voice was capable of 4 octaves which is almost unheard of. Both were greats. Put Bobby's counter tenor alongside Bill's perfect baritone and the sound is unparalleled. Check out them doing, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," and "I Just Wanna Make Love to You." I think Bobby's voice is immaculate and his range seems possibly wider than 4, maybe 5, but to my ear, I do think Steve has a wider range, at minimum 8. I just googled Steve's range and found 4 different answers. I also googled Bobby's range and found 2 different answers. All without leaving the first page. I do not trust much of what I find on the internet. All of the sources are sincere, but they aren't all right, maybe none of them are right. Unchained Melody: Bobby Hatfield live performance. The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’. Also: Bobby Hatfield live performance of “Unchained Melody “ on the TV show “Shindig” kzread.info/dash/bejne/qn192LqSn5ivftI.htmlsi=OmBVdie7xz-GPuIh

No autotune, just pure unadulterated talent. Back then we didn't mind if a singer had an off key here and there, it happens. This had NONE. The song turns 59 this year, still a classic appreciated by many.

I might be one of your oldest listeners (I'm 75). I've gotten a lot of pleasure from your videos on many topics. (BTW, I've traveled extensively in Europe - more than 50 times for both business and holiday but, sadly, I've never been to Portugal.) This song came out the summer between my junior and senior year in high school - I was 16). IMO, the video you watched was, possibly, the greatest live performance ever recorded. And yes, it was a consummate love song for all the young (and probably older) ladies of the time.

Here’s your friend, the 81 year-old widow from Northern Idaho. I didn’t realize that you would react to music as well and so I have a suggestion for you my sweet young fella this guy I’m about to tell you about is a KZread superstar he has tons of people who react to him from all over the world, his name is Dan Vasc and he is a metal singer. But his voice is such a phenomenal instrument, he has been formally and operatically trained to use his voice in the most wonderful way but he loves metal music. I never did …I’m too old… But this guy will blow you away. He just dropped a Céline Dion song called “my heart will go on” which was thematic of the movie Titanic and it is one of his most wonderful songs to showcase his talent, and that of his electric guitar player. I don’t know if you would want to review him on your channel but if you are trying to understand and learn about America, this is the dude you need to be listening to with this song, I think somebody said he had over 2 million subscribers. Just go up to your search icon and put in the name Dan Vasc and let the magic begin.

Most singers in the 50s and 60s could hit the highest of notes because of pure raw talent. Modern day not so much as only Mariah Carey can hit those high notes consistently and perfectly. It’s very rare that pure raw talent is seen much today. It’s mostly covered up by background music now not letting it shine like the past.

They started with talent, added a LOT of hard work, hours of rehearsing every day, being critical when listening to their recordings, accepting advice, then working some MORE. Talent is a starting point. It's hard work, attention to detail, and dedication that truly make the great performers. A person with 'talent' but no work ethic ... that's a tragic pairing.
