Right-wing media feedback loop leaves Trump with warped understanding of his legal situation

The feedback loop of Donald Trump promoting commentary from his right-wing media supporters like those at Fox while those supporters are taking cues from Trump in producing that commentary is distorting Trump's sense of the reality of his legal situation. Lisa Rubin, MSNBC legal correspondent, and Brian Stelter, Vanity Fair special correspondent, talk with Alex Wagner about the disruptive role of Fox and other right-wing media on Trump's New York criminal trial.

Conservatives believe that might makes right. They also have an algorithm for making things right. It's not simple math like "two wrongs make a right" rather it's a long complicated formula involving hate, malice and spite that basically says the more wrongs the better. They definitely are not saying what he did wasn't illegal or that he didn't do it. They are most certainly saying he didn't do it enough because of all the imagined bad things that have been done to him. In their estimation, he hasn't been spiteful or hurtful *_enough._*

They know they can't win in a fair election, so they're rigging it right now but They can't rig hundreds of thousands of votes. Are Democrats responsible for breaking Roe v Wade? he has only been charged with falsifying business records because he called the NDA payments "legal expenses" literally because that's is what he wrote in his checkbook and on the checks memo line an on invoices, 34 times for 12 checks. he was not intentionally falsifying records. it's a misdemeanor, and the statute of limitations is 3 years. and that is literally all this case rests on. The rest is all political theatre. the national enquirer has nothing to do with anything, BTW, NDAs are legal and it was an expense so arguably they were legal expenses. they are trying to say they were campaign expenses but that would be a federal issue and the NY court has no legal jurisdiction there but they are trying tie them together somehow even though the feds declined make that case.

MSNBC will lose faith of their viewers when Trump is acquitted. -- Trump had nothing to do with any of the invoices (12 in total), they were sent by Cohen to Trump company accountants, and he wrote in it “payment for legal services rendered”. He was the personal attorney for Trump. And he was never charged by Alvin Bragg about these alleged “falsifications”. So Trump had nothing to do with these invoices. And ironically Cohen wasn’t charged about it. Trump also had nothing to do with how the transactions that were recorded on a personal ledger. (12 counts). Employees inside the company recorded the transactions as “legal services” based on what Cohen gave them. And now we are left with 9 checks out of 11 checks which Trump only signed to pay Michael Cohen who was his personal attorney. We don’t have any crimes committed by Trump here. Happy to see you talk about systemic feedback loops. Note that they exist also on the progressive side. There is just too much information/content for us to process, and our filters, composed of our cognitive biases and the commercial mechanisms (YT associative filters) reinforce us sticking to bubbles. Add to that the political side of things where both sides try to discredit or even dehumanize the other side, and we get to a complete disconnect where neither side trusts the other to say _anything_ of value. A society isn’t healthy when some of its communities, living amongst each other physically, live in completely different realities mentally.

@@jmb3608 In theory, yes, but outside of pure logic and mathematics, things aren't strictly provable. Reality admits proof only in as far as you accept its reduction to a simpler model wherein proofs are possible. Worse still, most of us are also unable to validate a proof, let alone create one ourselves. The practice is that we rely on external authority to tell us what is valid and what is proven, and rely only very little on our own reasoning (it's hard and time-consuming). And people disagree on who the authorities are, each bubble has their own. Or rather, bubbles seem to form around perceived authorities. And those bubbles tend to cluster mostly based on similarity. That on itself is not such a bad thing. The larger issue is that dogma forms once we start recognising in-and-out-groups. The synchronisation between bubbles stops and separate mental realities spawn. Sometimes even to the point where if one group claims some statement 'X', the other group knee-jerk-reflexively starts claiming 'not X'. Sometimes even at their own detriment. Or, they make claims detached from reality, but find their validation in within-group-confirmation, e.g. the feedback loop discussed here. Thinking about this problem and similar ones is a pet peeve of mine. So if you have good ideas to solve it, I'm all ears, or eyes, I guess :).

If all of them say the same thing - more or less - and the news can be found in several news outlets, there is a fairly good possibility that it is reliable. Criss-crossing references is the only thing I can offer, but biases still remain. There is no escaping them, I guess. Once again, there are people I would not trust, given their past histories of lies and deceit, but maybe I’m wrong…

In an effort to expose myself to various and varied perspectives, I do force myself to watch Fox (i.a.) a couple times a week. It is SO disappointing. Occasionally I will post on their KZread a heartfelt suggestion to recognize we are all getting *completely different presentations of reality* At some point, each of us has been guilty of limiting ourselves to the news that *validates our opinions / makes us feel 'smart'* - that's Human Nature 101 (prob Social Media 101 too). *Al Jazeera* appears to be a decent source ..... I personally enjoy MSNBC a lot but, because I do expose myself to multiple other sources, I can see how even 'they' choose not to cover any number of angles. Funny that, with all the technological 'progress' we've accomplished, we seem quite far off from finding something as simple as The Truth (the whole truth, and nothing but). Also funny(?) that, with the democratization of information - literally everyone has access to all knowledge with their literal *fingertips* - so many people are choosing to be anti-intelligence. It's beyond bizarre. At this point in time, I guess it's just incumbent on each of us to explore different - and especially *conflicting* - 'news reports'. With all the perspectives, one can then suss out the *Facts* and, ultimately, form their *own Opinion* Not super optimistic about the number of Americans who care enough to do so though ... Will someone *please change my mind?* 😶

Politically, there are definitely two realities - only one of them seem to be consistent with the justice system and who has ended up being indicted. The only reason why I have more trust in left wing media is their inclusion of factual information versus opinion. I can't accept that these cases are just witch hunts unless you can tell me exactly how that's the case. The folks who believe these court cases are merely witch hunts has no other source of "credible" information to tell them otherwise. They will never believe any left learning media. Reporting today is so focused on filling up every second of air time, they 'report' irrelevancies like following a motorcade or photographing someone walking into or out of a building. That's NOT news. In my misspent youth I was a reporter for a local paper in the SF Bay Area. There were times when I used discretion regarding irrelevant details so as to not publicly damage a person who was, in essence, a by-stander to a story. Today we seem to have absolutely no professional standards on what and how to report important events. Trivia simply distracts the public from the important elements of a news story.

He knows that if he goes to jail, it's a huge payday for him along with validating his delusions of ""persecution". He is probably willing to sit in the can for a few days to make it happen! He's deliberately goading the judge to take action.

I'll be brutally honest, I would listen to Alex Wagner read the phone book. I find her voice both relaxing and invigorating at the same time. On the other hand, I'd sooner listen to nails on a chalkboard than a Trump rant (they are not speeches).
