Right under our noses -- dogs are saving the world | Megan Parker | TEDxBozeman

Dogs have amazing olfactory abilities which we are just learning to understand. Conservation detection dogs find rare samples which are nearly impossible to collect otherwise. Working Dogs for Conservation trains dogs to find weeds in Montana, moon bears in China, cheetahs in Zambia or the Cross River Gorilla in Cameroon, where dogs have proven incredible ambassadors and helped conservation efforts.

Dogs are a gift. Humans are so lucky and SO lacking in the deserved appreciation of dogs on Earth

This is one of the few good "TED Talks" on dogs. Unfortunately, "TED" doesn't have peer-review so there is a lot of nonsense out there. Well done and informative.

The first few minutes of Megan Parker's talk up to the plane giraffe collision should be a talk unto itself. It's a cautionary tale about the push of technology. Are we really civilized? Is it worth such reliance on technology if it causes stress on our natural environment?

not 50,000 years ago from a BBC article: Dogs most probably evolved from wolves at a single location about 20,000 to 40,000 years ago, a study suggests. ... By looking at the rates of change to the DNA from the oldest specimen, scientists were able to place the timing of the domestication of dogs to between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago.

Did you kill a giraffe with that plane? The least you could have done in this video was not to shrug it off, but to explain and apologise. I'm stunned.

Considering the plane and the way the giraffe is just left sprawled I assume they killed the giraffe. I would also believe they didn't check. I'm with you. I think they were careless and callous. How exactly DO you het a giraffe? After they were careless and callous she simply used the giraffe as an amusing anecdote or sidebar. I have zero respect for her and her people.

Is it 50,000 as she said or 15,000 years as the subtitle showed ? Did anyone proofread this thing before it was presented? How smart are they not to even proofread to spot 15,000 versus 50,000 years ?

I don't trust her. Looking at that poor giraffe...I believe her to be careless and callous. I wonder if they even checked big it was dead or just assumed and left it there; a humerous anecdote. What kind of personal does that?

Very interesting, and at first I thought: maybe there's new evidence (for the cancer-sniffing accuracy of dogs)… but after the poorly executed example-performance I lost confidence in her. It's obvious SHE knew were the poop was, she more or less showed her dog. Don't get me wrong, I'd like for all she said to be true, but this talk lacks any scientific evidence, is poorly conceived and won't convince any but the hardcore-wishful thinkers.

Evidence accuracy of bomb, medical, search alert dogs affected by handlers. Although dogs untrained away from any handler will alert on fire or medical. A chocolate lab could find a dead body 2 miles down in water with one focus, alone found drugs in one of 500 var gas tanks. Psychic. Not the trainer.
