Why Don't Dogs Live Forever? | Rodney Habib | TEDxNSCCWaterfront

NOTE FROM TED: Please consult a veterinarian before modifying your pet’s diet. We've flagged this talk for falling outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines because it seems to oversimplify the discourse surrounding pet lifespan and raw food diets, which are currently not recommended by the FDA and AAHA. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Are we doing enough for our pets? Rodney Habib is a voice for dogs around the world. After one of his dogs, Sammie, was diagnosed with Cancer, Rodney went on a journey to discover why? What he learned along the way will surprise you and leave you with an idea that will change the way you look at your animals.
Rodney Habib is an award winning pet nutrition blogger, podcast/radio show host, magazine writer, and, most importantly, a pet parent and advocate.
His popular website and blogs posts have allowed thousands of dog owners worldwide join him in his search for answers and to share the discoveries he has made in natural dog care and trying to get his pets to ‘live forever’!
Rodney believes strongly we all need to be the change we wish to see in the world, a value very much in alignment with our event and one we are proud to support and share for you all.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

AMEN. At age 6 my weimeraner was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given six months to live with coventional cancer treatment. I refused the treatment and for almost a decade she lived well and youthful with her stage 4 cancer and remained active chasing balls and frisbees well into her 15th year due to dietary changes. The expected lifespan for the breed is about 8 years. I doubled her lifespan for her breed in spite of stage 4 cancer. My sweet Bella passed August 24, 2017 at 14.75 years old. She was humanely euthanized. Her last week was difficult but was still eating well and was actually a bit overweight when she passed at 68 lbs. She was good up to end and I attribute that to a clean healthy diet.

Exactly, Jana. In the same way that people are finally waking up to the fact that what we put in our bodies directly affects our health, the same principle applies to our pets. I was ignorant about this with my last beloved dog; I know now, going forward, that I have a LOT of influence over my dog's health through diet and nutrition, and I will take a much more educated and proactive approach. We have the power of choice.

my dog (leo) passed on october 29 2022 due to a sudden cardiac arrest, he was 9 years old but was as healthy as a 3 year old dog, he was able to run, bark, play fetch and even drooled all over my slippers when i was'nt looking on the day of his death, he was just coming back from a walk, as his leash was being removed, he was wagging his tail and just suddenly, he wailed in pain and collapsed, before we even understood what happened, he was gone, he stopped breathing, his tongue turned white due to lack of circulation, his pupils unresponsive to light the house is extremely quiet without him and the silence is gut wrenching the pain is unbearable and i am feeling devastated, every little thing reminds me of him and i feel overwhelmed with grief and guilt if only i had seen this nine years ago... he could still be with me

Very important! I used to feed my husky Gohan straight kibble food since the first day I got him and for about 6 months. He was now around 1 year old, and I changed his diet and started to add more fresh foods. I switched his kibble brand to a higher quality one and mixed some fresh foods in there. I can already spot the change in everything about him. From a healthy looking coat, to even how he behaved. I truly believe if you want your dog to live longer and be healthier overall, please don't feed your dog only kibble. Add some fresh foods. If you do decide to use kibble, try getting a high quality brand. Quality over quantity! It will make a real difference!!

I'm not a vet and I don’t sell anything, I’m a proud pet parent of 3 beautiful dogs. If you're looking for ways to help prolong your pets life or heal your long life friend, then removing all harmful toxins from their body, making a few changes in and around the home while feeding them one of these diets is certainly a good start. Perhaps your considering on making the transition, but wish to learn how, when and what to feed, or you're looking for guidance, hints and tips on raw the diet. If you wish to learn the benefits of foods suitable, how to prevent and treat different ailments, alternative medicine in treating and prevention and much more, then this informative group is there for you and your pets facebook.com/groups/324599134386758/

@kathymiller6808 I fed my daisy a bit of rice and cooked dog senior food. (When she turned 20) because she needed the fiber for her poop to be normal. Before that I fed her bison meat and cooked tongue and hearts and livers n such. But eventually her belly started having a hard time breaking those down. Verrrrry small amount of rice for fiber. Senior dog blend (of a reputable dog food company) and ensure its nice boiled but with only a small amount of water. So that the foods not too watery. Because then she gets watery poo We celebrated her 21st birthday on the 24th of December. 17 days later I had to watch her leave my care. I love her very much. I am happy she chose to stay with me so long. And I look forward to seeing her again, when I have enough stories of my time to rival hers

Nice! I love the story since it's so relatable to my dog. 17 year old American Dingo that we found in the desert as a couple month old pup in a litter of 3 (all deceased). Early 2019 he collapsed 3 times in 20 minutes. Emergency vet that day gave him a cancer prognosis, severe heart murmur, fluid around the heart, severe anemia so bad that they wanted to do a transfusion or put him down. I refused and took two permanent meds for his heart and lungs and we went home. A month later I decided to take him up north and get a cabin for one last time and pulled him off the meds. While up north, I had a few drinks one night and sat on the patio with my dog laying in my arms and I just held him and cried. This dog has been through so much with me over the past 17 years. The next day, everything seemed so clear to me of what I needed to do so I hit the books then and put my professional skills to work. You see, I am a self employed chef of 12 years and have 35 years in the restaurant industry. I both my dogs off of the natural kibble I thought was so good but knew deep down that it wasn't. After two weeks of that I finally started them on a diet that I made entirely from scratch. Developing recipe after recipe, watching hundreds of videos from holistic veterinarians and learning as much about canine nutrition as I possibly could. 8 months later, I brought him back to that same vet one day who was shocked that he was still alive. She did blood work, did an ECG and was fascinated to see that he was actually recovering and his health was substantially better. His anemic blood count was back to normal, the murmur not nearly as pronounced and well, there's a lot more to that but let's just say that it's 10 months since that original diagnosis and he's doing great.

If I ever get another dog, fresh food will be the main diet. My beloved shih tzu was 17, and pretty healthy despite not having a perfect diet. She may have lived quite a bit longer, but in the end the slipped disc in her back several years earlier was making it so hard for her to get around. She was sad and frustrated she couldn't go for a walk anymore. I carried her around a lot the last 6 mos. But she was miserable and put her to sleep 3 weeks ago. Hardest thing ever .

Our 6-year old rescue mutt was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma 2 years ago with a 3 to 6 week lifespan. Put him on chemo immediately, but also changed his dry food diet to one that is 1/3 premium dry (with grains) plus 2/3 sardines, cottage cheese, egged, dark kale, spinach, broccoli, beans, ground hemp, flax, almond, oat, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds, spirolina, homemade Essiac tea, carrots, beets, chia, parsley, turmeric, and bone broth, with some occasional modifications. Not only has he been cancer free for two years, which is far longer than his prognosis was with chemo, but he is in the best health he’s ever been. While I’m a scientist and always a skeptic, I firmly believe that changing his diet so drastically has kept the cancer from recurring.

Over the past couple of years, I had 2 family members pass away. First it was my dog, then it was my mom. I think about everything both of them were eating. All throughout my growing up, we would feed my dog wet dog food, and a ton of scraps from when we were done eating (which was mainly gristle and other things WE didn't want to eat). My toy poodle only lived to be 11 years old. They aren't supposed to die so young. She had congestive heart failure. My mom ate a lot of sugar and spent so much of her life working and caring for my family that she didn't take much time to exercise or take care of herself. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2017 and died on July 31, 2017. She was 56 years old. If that isn't motivation to live healthier I don't know what is.

I feed my dog mostly raw, and I'm thrilled knowing he is not taking in the JUNK that dog food manufacturers produce! (Some are certainly far better than others though!) Humans need to recognize themselves in this as well---the pre-packaged crap that people consume on a daily basis IS the cause of their CANCERS!!! You can choose to feed it or starve it....period! :)

My dog would eat pretty much anything that I gave her or would steal anything I was silly enough to leave lying around within her reach. (She was a German Shepherd that could look most people directly in the eyes if she was allowed to put her paws on their shoulders so a lot of things were within her reach! Once she managed to steal a whole chicken off the kitchen bench and it was never seen again:) I would steam peas, carrots, corn, green beans and mix it with steamed rice and mix it all up for a few days of meals and give her raw chicken wings, uncooked beef, pork and sheep bones. She lived to be almost 16.

Thank you for this great info. I have always known this but you give me faith in what I believe. I feed only the highest quality food. I often cook for my dogs. I buy meat on sale and sear just the outside to kill bacteria leaving it very rare. I add veggies and eggs and they love it. I also feed commercial raw on occasion. When we say raw, we need to be careful. Raw that is commercially prepared is tested for bacteria. Meat you buy at the grocery is not, you should sear the outside. I learned this the hard way unfortunately. Check Walmart for packages of organ meats very cheap. Just the other day I bought chicken livers for about 50 cents a pound. I tossed them in a pan to sear the outside, added broccoli, cheese and eggs. I make them a home cooked meal a couple times a week. I lost the love of my life to diabetes. I was stupid. If only I had known. Also do not routinely vaccinate. Once immunity is achieved it generally lasts a lifetime. Puppy shots yes, boosters at one year yes.....then no more.

I just started my boys on home cooked meals. I cannot believe how fast I saw changes. First I stopped dry food that was 46% sugar. Thanks to your video on sugar in kibble. My little boy, Biggie, has colitis and suffers a lot. My heart breaks. I stopped Hills RX digestive care...it wasn’t helping...the amount of horrible painful episodes decreased. His food was actually keeping him sick. I am in the process of compiling information that I will send to Hills...I was so angry that their only motivation is GREED. I couldn’t believe how much sugar and carbs are in their kibble and the lack of nutrition in the can food. I fed them these foods because their Vet said they should be on it. It is not cheap times two dogs...My other boy, Jack, was put on Hills RX Metabolic- Mobility for his back knees starting to show signs of arthritis starting and he was over weight to long. I started feeding him less and exercising him more....he’s down to 13 1/2 pounds where he should be. It was the food. Point being, I kept telling her of my concern about Jack being on tuna for so long. It’s not even good for humans at that amount due to high amounts of mercury. My mind says she’s a Vet...she has to know what’s good for him. He needs the omegas and weight control. So I continued the food...but I couldn’t rest easy. When she told that Hills does extensive research on their RX food and are careful that their top quality foods are good for dogs. Nevertheless, tuna every day was driving me crazy...she says that she didn’t agree that he stop the food...I stopped it anyway..and have no regrets. He is doing well...they both are doing better on home cooked dog recipes and are so eager to eat and at 11 they are very energetic. I make sure he gets the omega he needs...I got the recipes from your videos. Jack had a belly ache one time. But is ok now. I did the slow change over from processed dog food to homemade. I can’t thank you enough for literally saving their precious lives. They are Chi-mix brothers and my life.... you are amazing. I thank you for all your honest information...how these dog food companies and Many Vets can find money more important is beyond my comprehension. Started feeling they keep our beloved pets sick so we have to come back....They need to be held accountable.

My senior Yorkie barks for his food now and runs around in circles at dinnertime.. I noticed the difference immediately in his energy and shiny coat. He also stopped his gagging cough which may be related to better heart health without all the peas and lentils in his former grain free diet. I made my dog's food since she was a puppy. Most people thought I was crazy but I felt she got better nutrition and I knew what was in her food. I don't think you can blame veterinarians - each pet owner is responsible for their pet's health. All you have to do is read food labels and you see the junk that goes into pet food. Most people are too busy, until their pet gets sick. Do the homework upfront.

She was always very healthy. Then, she had Diabetes at age 11, so, she was on Vegan dry food, but I still gave her all sorts of fresh food such as eggs, sometimes chicken, and she loved fruits and vegi all day. Yes, I thought she would live forever, but, she didn't.(14.5 to be exact)The life expectancy was written before we were born, and the "soul contract" we had with them. Paula, that's a new one. In all the years I have fed raw I have never heard that. I believe all dogs from small to giant breeds, have a carnivore's digestive system and will thrive on raw. It's impossible in my opinion to build and maintain a healthy immune system and maintain sufficient organ reserves on any other diet than raw. Also, raw food reduces the risk of unwanted gene expressions from altered proteins and nutrients found in commercial dog food, this can lead to horrible diseases like cancer. I have never seen any evidence that contradicts that raw food is beneficial. Keep them on raw and you will extend their life. That's my advice. But, I love Chinese medicine!

I have also added bone broth recently. I will say, on this diet, I was able to stop her dry eye medication. I have also reduced her monthly tick drops to once every three months in the summer and none in the winter. I don't give her the yearly recommended jabs either.

Wow! Good for you AND your fur child! Great job! I have an 11 year old fur child who's name is Maggie Mae, and she's a beautiful boxer baby! She's my heart! A few years ago, she really started slowing down to the point of wanting to sleep 24 hours a day. I started doing alot of research and decided to switch her to a fresh food diet from kibble. I had stumbled upon a website called THE TRUTH ABOUT PET FOOD and when I found out how bad kibble is and what AAFCO allows to be used in making dry kibble, I switched her over to a base mix (dehydrated fruits and veggies) and my choice of protein (ground turkey, ground beef, ground bison, etc) and within a two week time span, she became a puppy again, wanting to play, engaging in wanting to meet EVERYONE when on walks or ANYONE coming to our home. She was like a new dog! I'm forever grateful to Rodney, Dr Karen Becker, Dr Judy Morgan and all the other wonderful people who share their knowledge and wisdom for FREE!!! IMHO, my Maggie wouldn't be alive today if I would've kept feeding her dry food that was poisoning her body. I also feed her some very healthy supplements mixed with her food, and she's still going strong, still acting like a puppy and also has lost 10 lbs which she needed to do. So, she's down to her ideal weight!! Also, I became disabled ~ 25 years ago and in the last 7 years, I've lost my ability to walk for more than ~ 20 feet and wasn't able to go for walks with her anymore, so my husband bought me an electric mobility scooter 2 months ago, and now I'm able to walk her EVERY SINGLE DAY!! Anyway, so sorry for such a long reply, but I love to brag about my Maggie, my heart!💔❤️‍🩹💝💜

Our Rottweiler Pit bull Mix, Shadow, recently died. He was 22 years old. Often I have wondered what his longevity stemmed from. He did not receive any special diet - he ate regular store bought dog food. I attribute his longevity (at least in part) to the quantity of food he ate. We were always careful not to overfeed him. Until his last year, when he started to get thin, he was always "right sized" for his size. Possibly he might still be with us if he also had a different diet too, but I really feel like the quantity of food that your dog eats is very important.

first you want to make sure you feed a good quality food, www.dogfoodadvisor.com is a good start. I don't feed kibble anymore, but if you're going to add some fresh food, you can start by giving your dog some lightly cooked meat and organs. Depending on your dog, he may be able to tolerate raw with kibble, but some dogs cant. It's important to remember that dogs dont have the enzyme amylase in their saliva to break down plant matter, so if you're going to add vegetables, it's best to pulverize it in a blender. You can make a batch of something like: -Kale/Spinach -Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries -Carrots -Squash -Kelp or Spirulina -Coconut oil or Fish oils -small amount of raw honey -Bone broth
