Rig Rundown - Mutoid Man's Stephen Brodsky

In November at Nashville’s Exit/In, PG’s Chris Kies got to hang with Mutoid Man’s riffmaster general to see how he tours with one Flying V, an old rambunctious head, and a solid pedal setup.
Stephen Brodsky likes to keep it classic and simple. He tours with one guitar: a 1985 Aria Pro II Michael Schenker XX-MS Signature V. His bandmate, bassist Nick Cageao, had already went the Aria route by landing an Explorer-ish Pro II ZZB Custom 4-string so he thought it’d be cool if both Mutoid men would rock Arias. He sent the guitarist a Reverb listing and Brodsky got the axe. Everything about it is stock. Brodksy typically tunes down to Bb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb and uses D’Addario NYXL Top Heavy .010-.052 strings.

It’s kinda weird hearing Stephen speak in a normal volume and not scream into a mic every time he says something lol

I’m so inspired by him dude specially cause he’s not rocking expensive shit (relatively expensive lol) he just bought shit that looked cool that he could afford and learned to make it sound good.
"nice hairy bush from a penthouse issue in the '70s" - best pedal description ever
I've always dug Stephen's guitar style. A nice mix of punk, hardcore, extreme metal, progressive rock and classic rock. What's not to like?
Underrated guitar player. People need to listen more Cave In and Mutoid Man!

Coolest Rig Rundown yet. Stephen is such a creative guitar player, cool to finally see a more in depth interview with him.
I'm surprised no one yelled "Play Juggernaut!" from somewhere off-screen. Brodsky is still my favorite guitar player. I'd love to have seen a rig rundown of his from 2000-2002 or so, when Cave In was at the height of their space-experimental phase. They'd probably have to include their crazy-ass toy store laser guns in that video.

I also seem to remember a big, green Line 6 unit for a time, at least on Brodsky's pedal board. As far as Caleb's stuff... the only thing that stood out to me was the Boss Bass Synth pedal that he used to use on "Big Riff" and "Decay of the Delay". Although I think he stopped busting it out live at some point. I rembember Brodsky's black Guild... I think he had some sort of Gretsch for a little while before Antenna, I remember seeing that live around then. Caleb used to play a Grabber before switching to a P-Bass (I always wondered why... the Grabber is so awesome), and Adam played the brown "The SG" pretty much every time I saw them play, but I want to say I remember him playing some sort of triple-pickup LP.
Brodsky is Super talented and humble guy. Love how he is in this.
Just a nerdy gearhead observation...but Chris is the best interviewer that PG has IMO. I especially love seeing Rig Rundowns that he hosts. This was incredible! It also turned me on to a band I haven't heard of! Thanks Chris and Mutoid Man!

Brodsky is pure Genius.. An inspiration for all modern rock musicians
Cave In- Jupiter is a legendary album. Mutoid Man rules...but Cave In was so ahead of their time it isn't even funny. Huge influence on my playing.
Late to the party on this one, but that was a lot of fun. Brodsky is super creative, and I love that he's wearing a Lazer/Wulf shirt as they are great and super creative dudes as well.
I just discovered Mutoid Man and his guitar playing. What the F have I been missing?! This dude is incredible.
The Sunn + Os 2 sounds great. I know nothing about his band but I like this guy, and he mentioned Failure.
Great to see him keeping busy after Blue's Clues
To be truthful, I knew nothing about this guy or his band when I clicked on this. Now, I'm gonna check out everything he does. Really creative dude!

Greatest rig rundown ever! Brodsky is a beast!
It's awesome he is doing demos... I stopped watching a lot of these rundowns because they talked about cool gear and how good it sounded without ever showing it. I hope demos become more common so I can see some more of these!

Love the Rundowns where you get a person that loves to talk about gear! Awesome!
One of the best RR ever! The guy is a real nerd, I really love the tone and sounds from his amp and pedals.
Yes yes yes. Love rig run downs and i love mutiod man.
Brodsky is such a dork in the best way. His random knowledge of gear and effects always makes me smile because i’m the exact same way.
Great rundown. Chris asks such insightful questions, and Steve seems like such a nice, accommodating guy. Always loved Brodsky's sound in Cave In, Mutoid, and anything else he's done.
Thank you stephen brodsky.. this maybe the best episode so far.
One of those super fun and entertaining chapters of these series ! And Ive always loved Cave in !!
One of the best rundowns... Brodsky is such an amazing guy. And great player. Much love
Really good rig rundown***** Steven was very generous with info and demo's. thank you Chris & Steven ... Very Good!
I just love his sound. Brutal and raw but so musical.
This is a great interview. Dude just loves to play.
Awesome rig rundown!
Killer rig rundown!

The tones were amazing. Also a sick interview.
Nice! Cave In is one of my alltime favs so I’m def a fan of this band
I've been watching PG for a long time and since you had Steven on I hit subscribe. Cave In- Seafrost is one of my top 3 favorite songs ever written. Thank you
Awesome to see this Rig Rundown! Such an underrated band! Great Interview!
Boston legend.
The best rig rundown ever.
Just saw these guys Saturday night and WOW! Most definitely got my face melted. Killer show! Killer players! Killer tones! Killer songs! What more could you ask for?
This dude is cool as hell. Mutoid Man is amazing. I love cheap gear and pedals. All of my Boss pedals are reliable, don't break and never steal signal. Right on man.
One of the most inspiring rig rundowns ever. I love everything Steve put his hands on.
Love everything this dude does
Awesome this guy is, a lot of raw talent and energy. Great he recognizes Failure for some inspiration. Failure, Cave In, MM, and many others so criminally underrated :-(
Not my sound, but heck! Such a honest humble insight through a journey! Deep respect.
Love this. I've never heard of this band before but he presents himself so well in going to buy an album. So much better to see someone who's into pedals, amps and guitars rather than a guy hocking his signature model plugged into axe fx.
Man, that OS2 into the Model T sounds unbelievable - only rig rundown I’ve watched more than once, and I’ve probably watched it 15 times because I love the sound so much lol
I have played Aria Pro ii SB-650 AND SB-700 Basses for decades. Great instruments made very HIGH quality
One of my favorite pickers since Beyond Hypothermia dropped in ‘97. First time seeing his setup since it was just a couple pedals on the floor. This rules. Great interview! Thanks for this.

Brodsky is awesome. I love that he cannot help but raise his pick to the goblet of rock even with an audience of one!
oh shit, i had a song called "narcoleptic dog" in my first band when i was a little little kid. that's a crazy coincidence.

It's great seeing these old Aria Pro II guitars getting the love they deserve. Too many gear and rig rundowns are tedious sales pitches for new products, when guitars like these are no longer available outside of the second-hand market yet a good example can be something else. Matsumoku-era Aria Pro II basses and guitars are very much classics!
This is the second band I’ve found from rig rundowns that became 2 of my favorite bands. Mutoid Man and Pelican
One the most interesting rig rundowns, thanks!
never heard of these fellas before, but defnately piqued my interest!
love the Aria XX V, have a deep hankering for a ZZ Explorer at the moment.
Damn you Stephen Brodsky!!!! I picked up a ps-5 just to play around with because of this video. Now I need to find at least one more to add to my setup.
I know his band covered Magnified, but hearing him mention Failure makes me really happy
This guy seems like a really cool dude
That Digitech Synth Wah sound makes me smile EVERY GODAMN TIME
Wish you would have covered Nick Cageao's rig as well, but still fantastic!

Nick wasn't on tour with the band because he suffered an injury.
Awesome! Jim Mauradian from Mauradian Guitars who passed away worked on one of my guitars. He was awesome and an absolutely amazing luthier. Jim actually made Nuno's original guitar. Told me it was a Strat body he modified. He also made a few basses for Chris Squire of Yes.
That guitar is sick!
Brodsky is an amazing human being!!!
Cave In! Legend
Stoven Bredsky is the man!! A true talent

I wonder how much of this rig for Mutoid Man is the same for Cave in....... 🤔🤔🤔
Never heard of this band, and I also wasn't aware that Anthony Kiedis played lead guitar.

Loved Cave In growing up. Why does he have tape over the names of all the pedals? Is there a technical reason or is it so kids at the front of the stage can’t figure out the pedals?
