People say UFC and WWF are why boxing lost popularity in the late 90s. But now I believe it was this film
Even in a film like this, where the directions and fight choreography isn't that great Rothrock's skill shines through - Rothrock is a black belt in like, seven styles and was a world champ. Her career in American films should have matched her screen presence - among the "what if" movie projects that make you wonder what could have been, William Friedkin had spent years working on an action film based on the long-running series of paperback action novels "The Executioner" created by Don Pendleton. Stallone was attached to play the protagonist, ex-Special Forces officer turned vigilante turned off-the-books covert operative Mack Bolan. Rothrock got a call from Friedkin one day, just after making the two "China O'brien" films, and Friedkin and Stallone wanted her for a major role in the film. However, it never came out of development.

Friedkin was a loon especially in later years but my god, people mention how Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 3 not happening is the biggest crime in cinema. Honestly, I've been doing a deep dive into Rothrock's film career and one of the biggest crimes in cinema is not putting her against people like Stallone in giant studio movies. She's so likeable and obviously fun to watch when she's kicking arse.

Robin Shou was in Mortal Kombat!
Well it *is* a '90s movie, so the "dad was too busy to love me" story point was pretty much required, but I think she might have over sold it. She acts like he outright abused her and the only thing we have to go on is that "he didn't spend enough time with me." That gets "We never really had a relationship" levels of ambivalence and quiet bitterness and maybe some difficulty connecting to the men in your life, not "turn around and storm out of the restaurant on first sight" levels of deep resentment bordering on disgust.
The way the villain growled and mugged when demanding money at around 1:15:00 had me laughing hard. I mean, how am I supposed to take him seriously?
